The swing bridge is a technical masterpiece that, according to the information from the locals, has already failed. In the summer months the waiting time is 30-40 minutes ... so if you are in a hurry, you should be prepared for it.

The approximately 15 meter long new building is a landmark of the city and has since opened every hour on the hour to allow passage for ships sailing on the Müritz-Elde waterway. About 20,000 boats or ships pass this narrowest point between Plauer See and Müritz every year.
The landmark is also the focal point on land: it connects the historic island of Malchow with the mainland.
The new swing bridge received the audience award in 2014 as well as a commendation for the 2014 state building award.
With the construction of the earth dam in the years 1844-1846, the remaining flow faced new challenges. In order to ensure a connection between the island and the western mainland and at the same time shipping, the old, rigid wooden bridge had to give way to a lifting bridge. In 1863 this was replaced by a wooden swing bridge that could be opened and closed manually. In the course of industrialization, the volume of traffic in Malchow increased, and the bridge could no longer cope with the changed conditions.
In December 1912 it was replaced by a steel construction that offered space for two carts side by side. It was operated with a hand crank until it was destroyed in 1945. A new swing bridge was not built until 1948/49. In the meantime, traffic was ensured via a makeshift bridge on top of a barge. Operated by an electric motor for the first time, the bridge fell into disrepair until 1980. After ten years of closure, a swing bridge was rebuilt between 1989 and 1991.
In September 2012 the complete renewal of the swing bridge and the foundations began. The project was completed after almost a year of construction.inselstadt-malchow.de/index/object.php?mandat=130341
