In terms of area, WR are the largest protective element of the old and dead wood concept Baden-Württemberg (AuT concept). They serve to safeguard old and deadwood biocenoses, primarily in the area of old forests with an uninterrupted habitat tradition (so-called "hot spots") in a spatially functional combination. These are permanently established forest areas of usually 1 ha to 3 ha in size, which are left to their natural development until decay. In the course of the forest management, WR are delineated according to the population and mapped.
