Steep cliffs, a romantic coastal landscape, long sandy beaches and the enchanting sound of the sea. On Rügen, Germany's largest island, you’ll find all of this and more. In this Collection, we present four delightful hikes to acquaint you with the island’s dramatic cliffs, untouched nature and Baltic Sea coastline.

Rügen is no stranger to tourism. However, hikers will have little difficulty escaping its busier areas. An exploration of the Bodden landscape and the extensive dry-mesic woodland in the Mönchgut nature reserve reveal the island’s quieter side. Even at Cape Arkona – it’s northernmost point – you’ll find serenity. Besides, all that tourist infrastructure has its advantages: enjoying a fish sandwich on the beach and watching the sunset across the sea is delightful, even when it's windy.

The hikes in this Collection reveal just how diverse the island is. And there’s still much more to discover…

Once a year I have to go to the sea, breathe in the smell of salt water, eat a fish sandwich and listen to the sound of the sea. I'm usually drawn to the North Sea, but I often went to the Baltic Sea when I was a child. But since that was many years ago, it was time to go to Rügen and take a closer look

Oh, how wonderful! When you're out by the sea, walking right along the dyke and then the right sheep show up, that's exactly what you want, isn't it? But the Möchgut nature reserve also shows another side here in the Zicker Mountains. The little rainfall and the water-permeable soil have created the

I always thought I liked the sea best when it was decorated with long sandy beaches. But Rügen proved me wrong: I also love cliffs. The view through the treetops to the water is simply phenomenal and from the water up to the cliffs is also pretty. And there are long sandy beaches here too, just on the

Of course! If you're hiking on Rügen, you'll also look at the northernmost point, Cape Arkona. The 43-meter-high chalk cliff is really very impressive. And the lighthouses give you a real coastal feeling. It's possible that it didn't just stop at a fish sandwich.
