Essen is a place that proves that big cities and beautiful hikes go together. With its four major trails BaldeneySteig, Kettwiger PanoramaSteig, ZollvereinSteig and DeilbachSteig, it boasts more than 100 kilometres (60 mi) of hiking trails and has developed into a stronghold for urban hiking. What makes these routes so special is that they’re located in the centre of the city yet explore forests, meadows and fields with breathtaking views. A great chance to experience hiking in Germany's third greenest city was Essen’s big hiking event on the 13th April of 2024.
The BaldeneySteig was at the centre of this first edition of the hiking event for everyone. And it was a big success: About 10.000 hikers accepted the invitation to explore the area. There were six different routes to choose from, meaning there was something for all ages and abilities. A lot of the hikers said during the day that they would like to hike the routes outside of the event again, so we decided to keep the Collection online. The only difference is that you won't receive stamps nor hiking pin. But anyway, it's all about the fun and enjoying nature.
So, put on your hiking boots and head to Essen for the six routes of the first hiking day.
