Oldenstädter See is there “for everyone”: sun worshipers and water lovers will get their money’s worth on the extensive natural beach. Dogs can also enjoy the cool water within a designated area in the southwest of the lake. There is also a water area reserved for surfers and drivers of smaller boats without engines. Biotopes offer a retreat for plants and animals. There is a beautiful circular path around the lake for relaxed walks with a view of the water.

The circular route around the Oldenstädter See, also known as the O-See, is almost 3 km long, including the peninsula. There are benches and loungers all around the lake, positioned in such a way that you always have a good view of the lake. There is also a small dog beach and several bathing areas. A highlight is definitely the Rauchhaus, which is also on the circular route. There you will also find the "Trees of the Years". Otherwise you can learn a lot about flora and fauna from numerous information boards. A spacious barbecue hut is also available.

Today the Rauchhaus is used for events. It was built in 1736 as a two-story house by Hanstedt I. It was demolished in 1971 and rebuilt in 1986 by the funding initiative (see pictures). This required 9,129 hours of voluntary work. The smokehouse is, or rather used to be, a form of farmhouse in which the living area and stables were combined under one roof. These houses used to have no chimney. The smoke from the open fire always filled the interior of the building. The smoke was able to escape through the hallway door, the owl holes in the gable and leaks in the thatched roof. The woodwork was preserved by the smoke and, like the grain stored in the attic, kept pest-free. Also foods such as B. ham or sausage were preserved for a long time and smoked aromatically.Around the Rauchhaus there is a beautiful square with many places to rest and interesting information boards.

Somewhat hidden, in a small lounchy corner, there is a small bench under a tree. From here you can see the biotope. A very quiet and idyllic place to take a break.

Bridge on the Meyerholzweg along the Wipperau, probably the best pedestrian and cycling connection between the core city and Oldenstadt.

A nice tour, basically along the Ilmenau and the Elbe side canal. A bit windy, but a lot of fun.
