The Prora natural heritage area is around 1900 hectares in size and is located on the island of Rügen. Dunes, wet heaths and heath moors with rare orchids such as the Fuchs' military orchid, alder swamps, reed beds and the flint fields in the north offer many rare animal and plant species a habitat. The animal inhabitants include sea eagles, red kites, black woodpeckers and quail kings as well as grass snakes, adders and great crested newts.
Three quarters of the area is forested. Old deciduous forests, such as the slope beech forests, are left to their natural development. The coniferous-dominated forests are to develop into structure-rich mixed forests. In order to preserve the open land areas, they must be maintained, e.g. by extensive mowing or by grazing cattle, horses, water buffalo and sheep. Wetlands such as moors are to be preserved or improved by rewetting measures.
Visitors to the Natural Heritage Centre can get to know the area and the nature conservation strategies. The tree top trail with the 40 metre high observation tower offers a unique view of nature. Please respect the wildlife! Stay on the paths and keep dogs on a lead.
Since 2010, DBU Naturerbe GmbH has been the owner of the Prora area. It is responsible for the safeguarding and supervision of the natural heritage areas. Together with the Federal Institute for Real Estate Tasks (BImA), Federal Forestry Division, DBU Naturerbe GmbH maintains and optimises valuable habitats for native animal and plant species. The areas are also intended to serve people as places of recreation. Further information at dbu.de/naturerbe
