Imagine cycling right across the wonderful south of Germany with one of the World’s greatest rivers as your companion. On the Danube Route, the D-Route 6 of the German Cycling Network, wild floodplain landscapes, impressive architecture, buckets of culture and rich history await. To top it all off, most of the time, you cycle directly on the famously beautiful banks of the Danube.

However, your 790-kilometre (490 mi) journey starts a good distance southwest of the Danube's source, at the Swiss border near Basel. It takes you through the Swabian and Bavarian cultural regions, which promises stunning landcapes and delicious cuisine, to the Austrian border east of Passau. Discover natural beauties, like the Danube Breakthrough; wonderful cities, like Ulm or Regensburg; and architectural gems, like the Beuron Monastery and Valhalla.

From the start point in Weil am Rhein, the route winds along the Rhine to the magnificent Lake Constance. Then, you turn off in the direction of the Danube valley. Initially narrow and unspoilt, it later becomes wider and more densely populated. While the first 200 kilometres (125 mi) to Tuttlingen are steadily uphill, the tide turns as soon as you reach the Danube. From here on, you follow it downstream. At Jochenstein, you finally reach your destination on the Austrian border.

In this Collection, the route is divided into 14 stages, each between 38 and 77 kilometres (23 – 48 mi) long. This gives you enough time to enjoy the many Highlights along the way. There’s plenty of scope for dividing the route up to your own choosing and accommodation is plentiful along the route, with everything from hotels and guesthouses to hostels and campsites.

The Danube route is part of the German Cycling Network and an integral part of the German government's National Cycling Plan. The 12 long-distance cycle routes and the German Unity Cycle Route connect all regions of Germany with north-south and west-east connections. To this end, existing long-distance cycle routes, river routes or themed routes are interlinked with each other, joined at attractive and exciting locations and integrated into the existing Eurovelo network. A Collection with all 12 D-routes and the German Unity Cycle Route can be found at komoot.com/collection/1928660.
