Breathe in. Breathe out. Feel the cold air in your lungs. Use your momentum and glide over the thick layer of snow. There’s something almost meditative about cross-country skiing, when you are completely focused on finding your flow. Add to this fairytale, snow-covered surroundings and your active winter day on skis is perfect.
The untouched landscape of the Ore Mountains offers optimal conditions for such an experience. In this Collection, we present eight particularly beautiful cross-country ski trails that offer heaps of skiing pleasure surrounded by natural beauty. Better still, the trails are great for beginners and experts alike.
When it comes to the low mountain ranges of Germany, the Ore Mountains are one of the most snow-sure regions. Winter sports play an important role in the region near the German-Czech border and here cross-country skiers will find excellent infrastructure, perfectly groomed trails and cosy taverns to warm up in after a session.
The scenic Kammloipe trail, which stretches 36 kilometres (22 mi) over the mountain ridge from Johanngeorgenstadt in the Ore Mountains to Schöneck in the Vogtland, is particularly popular. The trail is one of the most wonderful in the whole of Germany and is virtually a must for your winter holiday in the Ore Mountains. If you want to hone your technique, you can let off steam in the Oberwiesenthal ski arena, where the competitive athletes of the federal base also train. Do you prefer to go high up? Then the areas around the Kahleberg or the Grafenstein will be right up your street. As you can see, the Ore Mountains offer a varied mix, depending on your mood.
To ensure that everyone has fun on the trails, we ask you to observe a few rules: be considerate of other skiers and respect marker signs. The groomed trails are only to be entered with cross-country skis; pedestrians and dogs should stay on the trails. If you do want to swap your cross-country skis for hiking boots, you will find inspiration for idyllic winter hikes in this Collection: komoot.com/collection/1860784.
