Three countries in three days? This is possible on the Three-Country Hiking Trail (Dreiland Hiking Trail) in the picturesque Markgräflerland region between the Rhine and the Black Forest. On this approximately 44-kilometre (27 mi) long hiking trail, you get to know Basel and its hilly surroundings in the border triangle. Starting in the heart of the city, you hike in an arc across the Rhine to Germany and France. Along the way, you enjoy changing views of Basel, the Rhine Valley and the sun-drenched hills of the surrounding area.
The Three-Country Hiking Trail crosses borders and is the perfect combination of culture and landscape. In three stages, you pass not only Basel's most impressive buildings, but also idyllic wine-growing areas, magnificent vantage points and colourful cultural landscapes. The start and finish of the trail are in the middle of Basel at the Schifflände on the banks of the Rhine.
The first stage takes you from the old town through the southern suburbs to the cemetery at Hörnli. The second stage is the longest, a good 19 kilometres (11.8 mi), and takes you to St. Chrischona and through the vineyards near Weil am Rhein to Haltingen. On the third day, after a detour to France, you hike along the Rhine back to the starting point.
Thanks to the flat stages and easy trail conditions, the Three-Country Hiking Trail is perfect for long-distance beginners. The starting and finishing points at the Schifflände are not far from Basel railway station, so you can easily get there by train. Hiking without borders – the Three-Country Hiking Trail makes it possible!
