Plenty of people talk about France’s Var coastline in clichés. It’s associated with crowded beaches in the summer season, hordes of holidaymakers and general excess. While it’s true that the region is extremely popular in the summer, you’ll have a very different experience in spring, autumn and winter. Away from the yachts and the bling, you can discover a region with an incredibly rich flora and fauna, not to mention the mild climate, quiet paths and peaceful, picturesque villages that dot the coast. This is the perfect time to head out for a run along the coastal path.
The origin of this coastal trail dates back to the French Revolution when the Customs Administration forged the path to monitor the coast. It was used by customs officers of the following administrations until the beginning of the 20th century, when its lookout function was abandoned. The Ministry of Public Works took over the path in 1973 with the aim of making the beaches more accessible to the public. The ‘littoral’ law of 1986 reinforced this project and allowed free public access to the coastline. Today, it’s the local authorities who are responsible for maintaining this fabulous coastal path in collaboration with the Conservatoire du Littoral.
The coastal path runs from east to west, from Saint-Raphaël to Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer. I recommend taking three days to run the section between Saint-Tropez and Hyères. Undulating along the cliffside, this section is absolutely remarkable. There are fantastic geological treasures to discover here and you can enjoy splendid views of the Mediterranean and challenge yourself on some technical single tracks. The route is designed for runners in good physical shape as the mileage of each stage is demanding. Depending on your level, you can always walk on some sections. This trail is perfect as a training block in preparation for an ultra-endurance event. I advise you to wear trail shoes and appropriate clothing.
Always remember to take enough water and food with you. On each section, you’ll pass villages where you’ll be able to replenish your supplies and find a tasty meal but be aware that few shops and restaurants are open during winter. Each stage ends near a variety of accommodation: campsites, hotels, gîtes…a benefit of running in a tourist region! I recommend that you check the availability of any accommodation, as some are seasonal.
The route starts at the bus station in Saint-Tropez. You can easily reach it from the SNCF stations of Toulon, Hyères, Saint-Raphaël/Fréjus and Les Arcs-Draguignan thanks to the ZOU network buses. For more information on the lines and timetables, head to this link: zou.maregionsud.fr (in French). Your trip ends at Hyères SNCF station, which is well-connected.
