Sid Is Dead (2023)
An entertaining twist on coming of age!
I have watched many movies over the years, some of the classics and some of the obscure. But lately, Hollywood and their ilk have not been providing many films worth your time.
This is not one of THEM. This is not one of the thousands of coming of age/rom-coms we have all seen. A surprisingly good script, different enough for you stay engaged and avoid the grumble, "Yeah, I've seen this before!" Plus, a very good ending without being a cliche.
A quality cast, quality production values and performances. - with a message which will surprise..
Its surprising this was not on anyone's radar and no-one has left more reviews. Its a good movie!
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Great cast, slow boring story!
Maybe because I never involved myself in D&D and I don't understand some sort of hidden references in this movie. But, it seems like a story cut & pasted from so many other, much better, classic tales.
A few bits from Tolkien's tales, Excalibur, the original Conan, etc. Etc. The writers didn't even seem to try to come up with something original - and its humor was, for the most part absent.
This has a great cast, all with great resumes and comic chops. But wasted. I am a fan of Chris Pine, Hugh Grant & Michelle Rodriguez. But some of their scenes were at best boring, at worst cringeworthy.
I am hoping the writing for Guardians 3 is much better. Sorry folks, but very unimpressed.
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
Rather perfect cast...wasted on a perfectly bad film...
Slow, and sad, eventually winding down to - no point. Possibly one of the worst films I have seen in years.
Great cast, horrible script & directing. The story starts with a nice Irish guy on a small Irish island - and gradually devolves into the depths of depression, mean-spirited drama and down right irrationality. No epiphanies along the way, no enlightenment - and then it was over.
I usually trust IMDB ratings, because they are based on normal people, with common-sense tastes expressing their views.
These movie ratings are abnormally high. And with all the "red carpet oohs & ahhs" I have been seeing about this film, I have to suspect the professional critics have been on-board, skewing the numbers.
Because I NEVER trust critics - they are too full of themselves and have little concept of what the public needs, wants or likes.
And I rarely trust the Academy, because they are too busy selling the agenda-du-jour, as seen from the streets of Hollywood.
This happens close to the Academy Awards - the oddest, darkest, most twisted films are touted as the best & brightest. I suspect that's what happened with this one, they are schlepping it around town all polished up with BS - to get an AA.
Don't waste your time folks. You will burn a few precious hours - and feel a lot more sad by the time its over. But very glad it was done!
Monte Walsh (2003)
A Waste of Great Skies & Tom Selleck
Well, I guess I expected another satisfying Tom Selleck movie. I had watched two excellent TS Westerns prior to this one - that were part of a 3 pack: Last Stand at Saber River & Crossfire Trail. Same producer & similar excellent cast & beautiful locations.
This one started out slow, with no discernible plot - and went south from there. The story line given described gives a few hints, but nothing prepares you for the final half of the movie.
Alert: Possible Spoilers:
This movie does not end well. Several characters that you like may be killed off. Whatever you might have enjoyed from the first half is pretty well tarnished by the poorly crafted ending. I warned you.
