American Nightmare (2024)
So slow...
Did the director ask everyone to talk really slow for this documentary? Holy cow! By the middle of the second episode the slow talking started to grate on me. By the third episode I turned it to 1.5 speed just to get to the resolution. It actually seemed normal at that speed. The story was good but the execution was horrible.
I think the high ratings are for the content but it's a really tough watch and left me disappointed. I watch all of these types of shows that Netflix puts out but for this one, I would have been better off reading an article about the events of this. Horrible story telling!
The Last Blockbuster (2020)
Easy Entertainment
Serves up a nice dose of nostalgia for when you're in the the mood. It was about a half hour too long and just became redundant. It briefly discussed the reasons for failing but I thought they could have delved more into this. Didn't Blockbuster get in trouble or have a class action suit against them at one point for overcharging late fees? Sandi was a sweet, genuine person and I hope this doc helps her stay open a little longer.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
Reviewers are missing the point!
All the bad reviews are because people missed the whole point for the focus of the doc. Whether you like it or not the producers aimed to show you what happens when unqualified people (web sleuths) get involved criminal cases. It was less about true crime and more a social/cultural themed doc about where the internet is taking our society. Watching it brought to mind the Fake Famous doc on HBO. Rando people on the internet just trying to get likes off of a poor families tradegy.
Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy (2021)
Say Yes!
This was excellent. Don't listen to the poor ratings from snowflakes that can't handle the truth about America. Those are the same people that prefer revisionist history so they can ignore the real reasons behind The Black Lives Matter movement. The only way to make America better for all is to continue to uncover the truth surrounding the politics of policies such as this doc.
America the Corrupt!
Murder on Middle Beach (2020)
Uneventful
I love true crime and was looking forward to watching this. Unfortunately this was super boring and I gave up after two episodes. If you are a fan of looking at a stranger's family photo albums then this doc series is for you.
The Night Of (2016)
Hidden Gem....
So so so good! If you are a fan of true crime and courtroom drama then give it a try. I was glued to this story and avoided spoilers which made it that much better. The acting and character arc's were superb. And John Turturro... muah!
Well done HBO. More please...
Casino (1995)
Nostalgia
I'm not that old but I miss those days when Hollywood churned out these kind of masterpieces. Like everything else in America, greed has won over, even in moviemaking. All we get now are blockbuster, star-studded, silly superhero movies.
Here's to hoping someday we get back to the arts in film. Otherwise us thoughtful Americans will be watching more movies like Parasite from South Korea.
Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer (2019)
Ignore the 1 star reviews- probably part of trumps PR team
Great overall history of the tabloid from conception to present day.
Side note- Trump's weaponized propaganda knows no bounds.
Devs (2020)
Excessive amounts of "smell the fart acting" in this...
So much potential with a great storyline about the question of determinism and free will. Sadly it was poorly executed with so much pensive acting in each scene that it became irritating.
It's possibly worth the watch if you have the patience. Not worthy of binging though. You will find yourself reaching for your phone to pass time during every scene. A book, movie, or another director would have been a much better fit.
After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News (2020)
Beware of Russian Bots
Excellent, must see doc. Of course it is somewhat one-sided but so is the effort to spread fake news.
It is really sad to see how little the American Government is taking on the Russian interference into our elections and their sowing of descent in our everyday lives.
All of these one star reviewers on here are more than likely Russian Bots or straight up close minded, easily brainwashed, sheeple.
The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley (2019)
Better docs out there
I was really disappointed with this documentary.
Amateur hour...The story is much more interesting than what is laid out here for you. I highly recommend watching The Drop Out for a broader idea on the level of scam that went on with this chick.
Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj (2018)
B-Side of Last Week Tonight
This show is Netflix's attempt at cookie cutting the successful John Oliver show on HBO. It's not entirely awful though, but I feel like it needs to work harder on an identity unique to the host Hasan Minhaj.
-And what's with the constant camera changes during his monologue? It's so clunky.
The Confession Tapes (2017)
A Flawed System
This is a great doc series that highlights the corruption of our court system. -Corruption in that prosecutors and law enforcement have alternate agendas where politics is intertwined with justice. Not saying that it's all intentional, but when individuals have a need for personal gains in getting a conviction, suspects and defendants pay the price with their lives. It's heartbreaking to watch.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
Weirdly happened and so appropriately..
As I started the first episode of this series I kept getting glitches/blinks of a pic from the John Oliver show. and Trump as the thumbnail in his background dialouge. The same pic continued to flash throughout the first 5 or 8 min before I began to realize this might not be part of the episode. To note I have been watching a lot of Oliver among others on YouTube like Rogan, Meyers, etc. But this was so strange that I actually thought it was part of the episode. I closed all my windows on in safari and it went away. Thank God. I started to become paranoid yo!! And now I'm starting to think I have psychosis. Although I'm a perfectly normal, albeit introspective, person. This show delivered lol. Either way there was a little part of me that was thinking wow, this is really innovative as far as futuristic fiction goes. To be able to take from my other queries and insert them into an already weird new tv content series...
brilliant or I am losing my mind or technology I can't keep up with. Close all your other browsers people before you start watching this lol.
