Painkiller (2023)
Poor man's Dopesick
It's not bad and quite enjoyable. The problem here for anyone who has taken the time to watch the massively superior Dopesick is that they have watched Dopesick. This version of events seems quite rushed and doesn't come close to the nuanced performances and detailed storytelling of Dopesick. It's hard to put your finger on the why this fails to be as impactful as Dopesick but it fails big time. After watching Dopesick I did quite a bit of research on the subject matter and found the storytelling to be quite accurate in that production. I feel so sorry for all the people whose lives have been ruined by this travesty and genuinely feel Dopesick does a much better job of telling this unfortunate story.
Bad Sisters (2022)
A lot to like in an almost perfect show
Probably a few episodes too long and would have benefited from being condensed down to 8 rather than 10 episodes. I feel it was on occasion a little flabby and the episode reduction would have made it a little tauter for me. That said it was still hugely entertaining with some really clever dark comedic writing. I enjoyed the timeline vehicle they used and the subtle way this demonstrated the shorting of the gap between events. There are some strong performances in this but special mention must be made to Claus Bang as JP who is brilliant as the malevolent snide scheming brother in law. So very nearly perfect for me.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
Legal side of a Bosch type show
In the books the LL is the much younger half paternal brother of Harry Bosch. The show has a Bosch 'feel' to it and has a familiarity that Bosch fans will appreciate. Very enjoyable.
Bosch: Legacy (2022)
They changed it...but didn't.
Was worried the change in job/relationship dynamic of HB, MB & Honey would negatively impact why the fans love this show. I like where they have gone and am enjoying this reframe hugely.
Reacher (2022)
Really close to the books and very enjoyable.
Having read all the books I was impressed with the attention to detail. Good casting and fast paced enough to justify 8 episodes for one book. Really hoping it gets renewed.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Overall a disappointment but with a few redeeming scenes.
Not a 1/10 like the faux outrage critics or 10/10 like the fanboy/girls would have you believe. Certainly underwhelming as a whole with a weak supporting cast and some jarringly poor dialogue. When the scenes are out of the Matrix, everything is familiar and the love starts to build but we are brought crashing back to the reality of the flics shortcomings as soon as the new cast in Matrix scenes start babbling.
The 2nd half of the film is better...thank the Lord. Please stop here..I beg you!
I Care a Lot (2020)
So many triggered dullards.. IT'S DECENT
Not all films involving Nazis are bad films because Nazis were nasty - my point - it's a film not a documentary & it's merit is not defined by the subject matter thickos rating it 1&2 out of 10. Pike is really excellent !
Finding Alice (2021)
Glacially paced
Too much filler nonsense.. could have cut about 40% off the final offering. Simply not right enough.
Citizen Soldier (2016)
Revealing
A revealing insight into the experience of this undoubtedly brave group of men. What I found to be the most surprising insight was that of the level of experience and competency of these part time soldiers. No one can doubt their dedication or committment. However, to be put in these situations without the necessary skill sets is desperately worrying. I don't know if this is the norm on terms of standard and I absolutely mean no disrespect to them or their fallen comrades. The way they operate, the speed they do it, their drills & tactical awareness, their comms and cohesiveness are below a standard required to execute what is being asked of them...I enjoyed this documentary but my heart goes out to them.
The Keepers (2017)
Desperately sad subject matter delivered at a glacial pace.
A documentary in need of some serious editing to deliver 3, hour long episodes. Initially shocking & enthralling, these emotions subside, giving way to impatience & irritation as the padding, jerkyvision & glacial pacing start to impinge on the experience. A desperately sad tale that is a miss as a fully engaging documentary.
Death to 2020 (2020)
It's a comedy not a documentary low mark idiots..
If the content doesn't support someones narrow view of the world or political leanings then it's a 1/10. Nazis were bad but it is possible for a film about them be good...you see..Eureka - a lightbulb moment right there for these dum dums
Escape from Cannibal Farm (2017)
A budget constrained gem
Given the constraints that this type of film is fighting against in terms of the hard cash required to get a film made and out this is a good effort by all involved.
Roadkill (2020)
Don't believe the Sharp As Marbles haters
I don't have the time or crayons to explain to the haters why they are wrong. Well written with some excellent cast choices. Laurie & McCrory are brilliant.
Project Power (2020)
Great premise - terrible execution
The fundamental principle of making the viewer care about characters is what makes this film a huge miss. Only marginally redeemed by some good special effects the writing is super clunky and the film has no flow. Overly vivid contrast and lighting makes this film have that Michael Bay look... and that's isn't a compliment.
The Old Guard (2020)
C'mon...it's a decent idea reasonably well executed
Probably doesn't warrant a rewatch but enjoyed it. Romped along with plenty of action. You know what you get with these films and the low markers need to just stop with the faux intellectual analysis... give it rest, suspend your disbelief and just enjoy.
Blades of Glory (2007)
It's not a documentary you idiots...FFS
The low reviewers who reference 'gay' in there titles or reviews really shine a light on how much more education and understanding we must strive for. It's not a documentary about two gay men who want to ice dance together as an expression of their love for each other for god's sake. IT'S A COMEDY with a ridiculous premise that is genuinely funny.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
As Europeans (well we were) we get it...does the ROW?
I liked this a lot... it really resonates as a result of a lifetime of watching this kitch but loveable nonsense. The film, much like the Eurovision SC, doesn't take itself too seriously. I do wonder what people who are not ESC savvy will make of it.
Little Fires Everywhere (2020)
Excellent with one small annoyance
I love everything about this apart from Kerry W's about to cry wobbly chin face in virtually every scene she is in. Don't get me wrong, she is an amazing talent. However, it becomes less and less impactful as a result of repititious emotionally wrought angst expressions she delivers whether ordering food or dealing with tragedy. Still awesome mind 😎
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Bad day at the office Spike
This film had the potential to be relevent and address current world issues whilst delivering a powerful & impactful nuanced movie. Now, just because the intention is righteous doesn't mean the execution will on point. The fact is..this movie disappoints on every level possible. Politically preachy in such a patronising manner, terrible clunky writing with equally wooden delivery. Casting in the present and past scenes is utterly ridiculous with so may scenes ponderous & pointless adding nothing. I have to watch a film to the end to give a fair review...this was a struggle as it's a total mess and hard to understand what Spike was thinking..
Space Force (2020)
Has its moments..could do with a few more!
No doubt some of inter forces gags are great and some of the political obvs are laugh out loud. The long time between them is the issue but absolutely has potential to improve. Steve C and J Malk are trying their hearts out so I guess some better writing will deliver a great 2nd series. Still very watchable and enjoyable to a point.
The Office (2001)
The genuine UK original...and the best
Excruciatingly good watch that is sometimes so hard to watch with what was brave writing & acting. We had never seen anything like this before and it avoided adding sweetener like the US version.
The Office (2005)
It's a very good show but a very different show that from Ricky Gervais
There is no comparison for me, apart from the name and situation there are so different. The British version is much more painful to watch in a good way...the US is very funny and perhaps thought a complete style copy remake was unwise. Not sure Steve C could have pulled of a David Brent tbh. This is a great comedy with a great cast and well worth it's IMBD rating. For me the pathetic Brent in the UK original is my choice if pressed as but still argue it's not an apples v apples comparison.
Modern Family: Baby Steps (2020)
Time to say goodbye...and this makes it a little easier
Not a single smile for me in this episode, never mind a chuckle and a million miles from a laugh out load moment. There's got to be a better way of making the end of an era less emotional for us than being woefully unfunny so we hate it at the end.
Hunters (2020)
Tarentino vibe if Tarentino was crap
Really wanted to love this.... it's just unlovable. With an hour to fill for each episode there's just so much padding, get on with it FFS. In the end I gave up as it progresses as such a glacially slow pace.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Not engaging and way too long...
One of those movies that doesn't grip you, you're not engaged in and frankly you simply don't care about any of the characters... some decent jump/scare moments and a massive CGI budget....
