Alice in Wonderland (1966)
Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland is a masterpiece.
There have been several films that attempted to bring the viewer into the dream of Lewis Carroll's Alice.. but none have succeeded like Jonathan Miller's 1966 BBC Alice in Wonderland. A legendary cast.. without costumes.. improvises Lewis Carroll's work with an unsettling brilliance. The result is a film that casts a new light.. or shadow.. on a story beloved by millions. A dark environment both in aesthetics and passion.. Jonathan Miller recreates Alice's dream into a nightmare. One that doesn't allow the viewer to get comfortable unless they can accept the evil undercurrent that moves the story forward.. or backwards. The film is cast with many legends of the screen and stage.. all of whom provide performances worthy of the legend accolade. The character of Alice is represented differently than in traditional adaptations. She seems almost removed from the "reality" taking place before her.. even at times when she is involved in the "reality" as much as the characters of her dream-world. Jonathan Miller's Alice in Wonderland for BBC television is a must-see for anyone who enjoyed Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass or anyone who enjoys low budget films that are improvised into timeless masterpieces.

"Slow" for "Plot Holes"
This film started off good but slowed to a crawl in the middle.. either in an attempt to be suspenseful or to kill time.. and by it's end was a bad film. There are several plot holes in the film.. a film that had potential to be really good.. (even with the general idea having been "borrowed" from an Alfred Hitchcock film).. but there are major questions in the film that are never approached let alone answered. Questions that if answered would put an end to the nonsensical story acted out on the screen. I wanted to like this film.. and I was originally going to give it a 6 out of 10.. but the more I thought about the film.. the more I realized how much the story requires one to work really hard at willfully suspending their disbelief. Overall it left me with that "I want my $8.50 back" feeling.. one that has been recurring with American cinema.

Quality Film..
I have a tattoo of the business man on the high wire.. so I obviously love this film. People can hate this film.. but to me.. it's acting 101. Jack Lemmon himself had said it was the greatest cast he had worked with in his career.. which for those of you who don't know.. was legendary. The screenplay for the film is as good.. if not better.. than the script for the pulitzer prize winning play. Alec Baldwin's performance is some of the finest cinema of the 20th century.. and c'mon.. you and I both know Alec Baldwin is an average actor.. at best. So I think it's speaks volumes for Foley and Mamet's meticulous attention to direction and screen writing respectively. There will always be people who don't like this film.. but it happens. Always Be Closing.
