Crawl (2019)
Worth a watch but not worth anything above 3 stars
I used to write reviews for every movie I watched and then I stopped because it took too much effort. But this movie made me want to write again...
It's soo unrealistic and I know some people don't care but when you've got a protagonist who is convinced she can out swim 5 gators because she's been swimming since she was 5, you start to question it.
Overall, it's entertaining, I'll give it that, but it's beyond unrealistic and the girl makes some pretty questionable choices.
93 Days (2016)
Intense and not for everyone but beautiful regardless
This movie follow the story of an outbreak of ebola in Nigeria and a group of doctors' attempt to contain it. What I particularly liked about this movie was the way the characters were introduced before the virus spread and the story really began. When I watched it, the doctors weren't just doctors, they had lives and families and it made it harder to watch. Not going to lie, it's a slow movie but that's because it was the only way to show that tension and fear that the patients felt while in quarantine. Again, this movie is not for everyone but I would recommend it. The acting is also pretty good.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Pretty good
As a fan of Luc Besson, my expectations were pretty high. He's got a particular style, despite majority of his most popular films being sci fi or action, there's a certain quirkiness to them, some darkness too. Valerian had great special effects, average acting and a pretty good plot that didn't have plot holes, actually made sense and was kind of applicable to real life actually. Personally not my favourite sci fi movie, nor my favourite Luc Besson movie but still a good watch.
The Mule (2018)
A good watch for Eastwood fans
You can tell that it's one of Eastwood's movies, he makes sure to give the story time to sink in and somehow makes it realistic, despite its wild plot. Some may say that this movie is slow but I would say it's just Eastwood being realistic and giving the plot time to develop. The Mule follows a Korean War veteran, Earl, who becomes a drug mule for the cartel because of his financial problems. Don't expect too much action but the suspension still keeps you on your feet.
Shrek the Third (2007)
Ehhhhh, just not that good
The 3rd movie is usually the worst so I wasn't too surprised but this one was missing something. The classical humor was there but it was missing that spark. There were too many characters to follow and while I loved that feminist movement towards the end, it just doesn't compare to the other Shrek movies.
It's not bad, the plot is decent but it's definitely not the best out of the 4 films.
Shrek 2 (2004)
Almost as good as the original
It's hard to live up to the legacy of Shrek but the producers of Shrek 2 did pretty well. The plot is that Shrek goes to meet Fiona's family and begins to grow self conscious about his 'ogreness.' Fearing that he doesn't live up to the standards of a classical knight is shining armour, Shrek becomes human but in doing so, everything comes crashing down as he realises being ogre is enough for both him and Fiona.
Shrek (2001)
I'm a believer
Wouldn't even know where to start with this one. Such a childhood favourite but cartoons get even funnier when you're older and realise how many adult jokes there are. Shrek is a classic, the songs, characters, the story line and just Donkey. Highly recommend, you haven't lived until you've seen Shrek.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
You'll finish this movie feeling redeemed
Shawshank redemption is honestly one of Stephen King's best stories. Following the story of Andy Dufresne, a man charged with the murder of his wife is sent to Shawshank prison to carry out his life sentence. Andy defied any expectation of what a prisoner could or couldn't achieve and the power one could possess. With his inmate friend, Red, and his intelligence, Andy struggles to survive in prison with all his effort leading up to the grand finale.
This movie is beautiful, it's brutal and emotional and it makes you question the American penitentiary system in the 1950's. But the point is that it's a heart warming story of two inmates, talking about hope, redemption and trying to figure out their next move.
While there could only be one winner for the '94 Best Picture Awards, Shawshank deserved the title just as much as Forrest Gump so trust me when I say that you won't regret watching it.
Gemini Man (2019)
Mildly disappointing
Not too bad of a storyline but it was pretty unrealistic, even for an action movie. The story was average, the whole clone thing, and it made sense but no human can jump on to the roof of a building like he's playing hopscotch. While the technology is impressive, the HFR didn't work well and it made the performances seemed fake, in some way. Overall, it's pretty clear that they spent too much time on the special effects and not enough on the plot.
Patch Adams (1998)
Classic Robin Williams
Ignore the critics, this movie deserves more credit than it was given. It's a revolutionary story of the man who completely changed the doctor patient relationship. While he sometimes appeared delusional, Patch believed that the best kind of medicine was laughter. He believed in restoring humanity to patients, seeing them as individuals rather than numbers or breathing corpses. It's heartwarming and funny and brutal at times but definitely worth watching.
Joker (2019)
Insane, bold and beautiful
A remarkable performance by Joaquin Phoenix. The last time I saw someone get that into character was Heath Ledger's own take on said psychopath. Arthur Fleck, the Joker, is a complex character, he's not just insane. He's a troubled man who just wants to make people laugh but his job as an entertainer is merely a facade for his mental problems hidden under all the makeup. The way Arthur transforms into the Joker is frightening and disturbing but it's also mesmerising, you never know if he feels trapped or free in his true form. This is not to say that Joker's behaviour is acceptable or correct in any way, he's a sick man with a contorted view on life, but it's the product of years of abuse, mental illnesses and a ruthless society. Gotham, you reap what you sow. The Joker is not for everyone, there's no villain that needs to be stopped from taking over the world, nor is there a hero, but rather Joker is made to be open to interpretation. Whether he's the victim or culprit of all the chaos is up to you.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Chilling and suspenseful
Overall this is a pretty good movie, it's got a good storyline, some decent special effects and some chilling scenes. The movie is about the protagonist, Tom Cruise, and his two kids who try to survive a mysterious and confusing alien invasion. Although it doesn't have the most original storyline, finding out what the aliens do with the humans they capture is the creepiest and most original scene.
Under the Eiffel Tower (2018)
It was missing a lot
I'll give the directors some credit, it did have a decent storyline. A man going through a middle age crisis goes on a holiday in France and makes spontaneous choices in the hope of feeling better about himself. He eventually makes his way to a vineyard where he falls in love with the owner. Not a terrible story but it lacked excitement, good characters and enthusiasm and almost everything that a good romance movie needs.
Godzilla (1998)
Pretty average, but still good
I usually read other reviews before writing my own and all I've seen is either 'terrible' or 'great' for this one. I always seemed to love it as a kid but after rewatching it as a teen, there's some clear inconsistencies and obvious mistakes. If you're not someone that pays attention to the details then you have nothing to worry about. In saying this, it's also a pretty fun movie. It's got a good storyline and some interesting characters. It's not mind blowing or a work of art but I'll give it some credit.
Grumpier Old Men (1995)
Equally as good as the first
The concepts are pretty much the same as the first but it does have a good story line. Following John's marriage, it's clear that Max feels even more lonely than before and finds himself falling for the new girl in town. The only problem, neither one is more stubborn than the other.
Grumpy Old Men (1993)
Some of the most creative insults are found in this movie
This is an all-round family favourite and is worth watching. It's the story of two immature old men who have been plotting and carrying out their revenge plans since they were teens. The most beautiful part of this movie though is seeing how that conflict is really love, they're the literal embodiment of the term 'fremenies.' The funniest part for me is seeing their creative revenge plans and unique insults.
Léon (1994)
More than just a movie
Following the life of an antisocial hitman and his house plant, Leon lives his life sleeping with one eye open, both literally and metaphorically. After befriending and becoming the care taker of a revengeful troubled little girl, Leon realises that life can be more than just satisfactory and tolerable. Although controversial, Leon teaches Mathilda to 'clean' in the hope of giving her purpose and they become their own version of Bonnie and Clyde, but their relationship is far from simple. Luc Besson sets a new standard for dramas in this cinematic masterpiece. He understands that people are messy and flawed and that life isn't fair so why should it be so in movies, and for that I give it 10 stars.
Tall Girl (2019)
A sweet teen movie
I'm not going to rant on about the plot because you can Google it but I will say that this is an adorable movie that for once didn't have the clearest ending. For once the main characters weren't 30 year olds playing 17 year olds and I think it was, overall, pretty realistic. The characters were pretty good and, as a short girl, I couldn't always relate to Jodi but the movie is about so much more than just height.
Aquaman (2018)
It was....ok
I was quite disappointed that this movie didn't live up to my expectations. It's plot is quite interesting and although it's predictable it's definitely entertaining. It was, though, quite cringey, the colours and costumes were excessive even for a sci fi action movie. The target market seemed to be aimed at 12 year olds rather than adults and while it did have some good special effects, it's safe to say that D.C has done far better in it's past movies.
World War Z (2013)
Good quality zombie movie
A cool thriller zombie movie with some great special effects. The story follows Gerry Lane, played by Brad Pitt, whose unique skills guarantee the safety of his family in exchange for his help in solving the zombie problem. During his search for the origin of the outbreak, he notices that the zombies completely avoid certain people. This movie contains little gore but some great suspense scenes and is reasonably logical.
Wonder (2017)
Bring some tissues
Just saying it's title in my head makes me smile. Wonder is a true masterpiece, it's honest, realistic and you'll be on the fence between happy and sad tears for the entire film. Based on the life of 10 year old boy with a facial deformity, Auggie struggles finding his place in the world. This movie is unique because of the way it examines similar situations from different points of view and it forces you to change your opinions and assumptions of characters. This is great family movie and is definitely worth watching.
Passengers (2016)
Pretty original, worth watching
A sci fi and romance movie can be hard to create but it was done pretty well in this movie. The movie is based in the future, specifically on the Avalon, a futuristic passenger spaceship on its way to a new planet for resettlement. After a seemingly small system failure, protagonist, Jim Preston (Chris Pratt), wakes up from hibernation only to find that he's the only one awake. A year later and on the brink of insanity, Jim falls in love with a woman still in hibernation. After waking Aurora up and lying about his part in, essentially, ruining her life, Jim and Aurora fall for each other. As small malfunctions around the ship become larger, Jim and Aurora's problems expand beyond their relationship as they find themselves responsible for the safety of the 5,000 lives onboard. A controversial movie with some good special effects and some great tension, Passengers is worth watching.
The Island (2005)
Loved the mystery
Based in a post apocalyptic bunker, a group of people, saved from the "contamination", wait for the day that their name gets called in the lottery to go to the Island, the last livable place on Earth. With their specifically tailored diets, their unusual choirs and absolutely no information about the outside world, protagonist, played by Ewan McGregor, begins to question the details of his suspicious life. After learning that the Island doesn't exist and that people sent there are simply killed, Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta, Scarlett Johansson, escape the bunker only to find themselves in the desert. As they are hunted down they learn that they are not humans, they're clones of their rich doubles whose only purpose is to act as an insurance policy if the client were to ever need a new heart, lung or brain, even. The two embark on a journey to find their doubles who only believed that their clone remained in a vegetative state and never gained consciousness.
Stand by Me (1986)
Honest and powerful, Stand By Me is worth watching
An amazing adaption of Stephen King's, The Body. Set in the 1950's, Castle Rock, Oregan, a group of troubled youths set off in search of the body of a missing boy with the hope that their discovery will bring them fame. What started off as an adventure turned into a discovery of true friendship and of one's own character. What we see at the beginning are 4 simple, stereotypical characters; the smart one, the leader, the scared one and the funny one. However, throughout the course of the film we discover that the depth of their character runs deeper than anyone could have expected, as the boys travel further away from their suffocating home town, they're forced to reflect on their own reality.
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009)
Good movie, if you're 12
I have to say I expected worse but the story line is pretty eventful. It follows the life of a teenage boy who makes a deal with vampire to save his friend from a supernatural, lethal spider bite. The only catch is that he needs to become a vampire.... As the story develops, the protagonist learns that, despite his departure, he's driven a wedge between his friendship, one that changes the course of the story. Overall, it's pretty creative exept, as someone who isn't 12 years old, I found the acting quality pretty poor and the plot cringey.
