Monkeys, Go Home! (1967)
Weird
Not the best film ever, but with this many monkeys it can't be at all bad. Definitely worth watching. I suppose maurice chevalier also lends some class to the film. But the monkeys are the real reason for watching it. They're great. It can't be long until someone remakes this.
Chicken Run (2000)
Terrible
Honestly the worst film I have ever seen. At least, the first three quarters are. This is the only film I have fallen asleep in. Really really dreadful. Incredibly predictable, jokes are laboured and the references to the Great Escape aren't even funny. Even Babe 2 was better than this.
Badkonake sefid (1995)
Quick review
This is another of those films that I always see on Channel 4 in the early morning. It was brilliant. I only saw it once, but was astounded at the simplicity of it, yet I could not draw my eyes away. Absolutely amazing. Worth seeing. It is about a girl who sets out to buy a goldfish, but things happen on the way. It is almost a parallel to the story in the Bible where Jesus was tempted by the devil. But it's not like the Last Temptation of Christ
Hamam (1997)
An Italian Inherits his Aunts baths
Hamam: The Turkish Bath is a beautifully acted film, and a film the the director should be proud of for a first time film. Francesca d'Aloja is an incredibly talented actress, and this film should lead to better parts for her. This film is beautifully shot, and the only weakness is the story, which is a little simple. Overall though, despite the subtitles (at least it's better than dubbing), it is a magnificent film.
To vlemma tou Odyssea (1995)
Long film about a search for missing film reels
Keitel turns in a wonderful performance in this overlong film about a man's search for missing film reels. He plays A, a man who encounters different people on his quest for the reels. There is a lot of symbolism, and the film is very depressing. However it is masterfully constructed, and well acted by most of the cast. It is very hard to find, however.
Aux yeux du monde (1991)
Bus ride makes a good film
COULD SPOIL IT FOR YOU, BUT YOU WOULDN'T CARE MUCH ANYWAY This is a film that i've only seen twice. It plays on the bizzare premise that hijacking a bus full of schoolchildren would make your girlfriend believe that you love her. However, the film is remarkably well executed, with a score that caught my mind. There is superb acting from the main two characters, but the supporting cast let the film down a bit. A film that is worth seeing however.
Up the Chastity Belt (1972)
Funnier sequel to the legendary Up Pompeii
This film does not have as funny a theme song, but most of the jokes are funnier. Howerd plays Lurkalot, a serf, who bears a striking likeness to Richard the Lionheart, and goes off to fight in the crusades. Eartha Kitt puts in a performance as Scheherazade, and there is a surprise about the reality of the Crusades.
Up Pompeii (1971)
Classic British comedy
Frankie Howerd is a genius. This wonderful film is an unrealistic story of what might have happened in AD 79. A slave, Lurcio, accidentally picks up a scroll naming conspirators, and much British fun follows. This film has little storyline, and is not particularly funny, but it is worth watching for the theme song and Lance Percival's Roman General.
The Show of Shows (1929)
Real entertainment
An amazing Moulin Rouge style film, with great songs and cameos from Myrna Loy and Beatrice Lillie. Amazing songs, including "Singing in the Bathtub", A good old-fashioned film, vaudeville at its best. It is well produced, and if they had added a storyline, it would have detracted from the entertainment. However, this film is impossible to find on video
