Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) was the unexpected star of Chicago Fire's fall finale. The firefighter wasn't touted to be the center of attention, but it felt like he did most of the heavy lifting thanks to a series of events that culminated with a deadly standoff.
The fall finale ended with Cruz in a church, confronted by a man who claims to be the cousin of Flaco. This was treated like a big deal because, in the grand scheme of the show, it is. Flaco is, admittedly, a character who hasn't been referenced in over a decade, though, so you'd be forgiven for being a little rusty on his backstory.
With that said, here's what you need to know about Flaco and Cruz's connection to him.
Cruz's relationship with Flaco dates back to season 1 Chicago Fire -- "A Monster In the Field" Episode 13001 -- Pictured: Joe Miñoso as Joe Cruz...

Chicago Fire teased lots of plot lines heading into its season 13 fall finale, but the one involving Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) was a complete surprise. The episode opened with Novak gazing upon a pic of her family as she gets ready for work, but the dramatic weight of this brief moment wouldn't be fully realized until the end of the episode.
At the tail end of the episode, Novak has an interaction with an elderly woman who used to be her neighbor. The woman asks if she was one of the Novak kids, and the tone of the questions suggests that something tragic happened to the family. The implication is that a member of the family took their own life.

The Chicago Fire season 13 fall finale did not disappoint. It had a mixture of drama, humor, and tension. We also got a little more of Pascal and his wife!
Caution: This post contains Spoilers from Chicago Fire season 13, episode 8
The episode promised us a few things. We’d see Carver look after a dog, Mouch and Herrmann got ready for their officer tests, and there was a little more about Pascal and Novak.
Let’s just start with the dog. Carver may end up getting one of his own. He quickly stepped up to look after the dog of one of the patients on a call, knowing that there was nobody else to look after him. One of the best things was getting a mention of Tuesday. Ritter shared that Tuesday used to hate leashes and would get into trouble at the firehouse, which was why he had to leave her home.

Kelly Severide is the face of Chicago Fire. We can discuss which character has been in the most episodes, or which have been more consistent in terms of storylines, but Severide has been part of the show's core appeal since its pilot. He's a vital piece of its continued success, which is what made the season 13 fall finale such a bummer.
The episode quickly established that Severide would not be appearing. The veteran firefighter is in Michigan, meaning he will be absent from the rest of the drama that plays out during "Quicksand." It's not ideal, but one episode isn't so bad, right? Well, it gets worse. Chicago Fire is going on break after the airing of this episode.

Chicago Fire season 13 has been building up to this. Well, at least, partially. We have reached the fall finale of the firefighting drama, which features a subplot in which Carver (Jake Lockett) befriends a dog and Cruz (Joe Minoso) receives a chilling omen.
The most consequential subplot of season 13, episode 8, however, revolves around Herrmann (David Eigenberg). The veteran firefighter plans to take the chief exam alongside fellow 51 veteran and best friend, Mouch (Christian Stolte). Here's a recap of what went down during the fall finale, and what lies in store for Herrmann in particular:
Joe Cruz's past rears its ugly head in "Quicksand"
The episode started off on an unexpected foot. Instead of focusing on any of the aforementioned and established characters, "Quicksand" decided to open with Lyla Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) getting ready for the day. The episode delves further into her character and her tragic family backstory than ever before,...

Here we are (already) at the Chicago Fire fall finale. It snuck up on us again, but the One Chicago shows are about to go on hiatus.
Usually, Chicago Fire heads into the hiatus with a cliffhanger, but it’s unclear where the writers will take the show this time.
During the November 13 episode, the writers wrapped up the story with the crooked cop who crossed paths with Fire Cop (Kelly Severide).
The firehouse had responded to a fire at a storage facility, where they found a cache of “ghost guns” in one of the units. Severide (Taylor Kinney) felt they were dealing with arson but struggled to find evidence.
Captain Robert Bishop (Keith Kupferer) was brought down after a fire started in his garage. Firehouse 51 put out the fire, and Severide found evidence against Bishop at the scene.
The new chief may have started that fire, especially after a chat with Severide.

Hot Water Music’s half of the split features a cover of Quicksand’s Slip opener “Fazer,” as Chuck Ragan and company imbue the heavy track with their own sonic characteristics while adhering faithfully to the source material. Cult of Luna‘s cover of Refused‘s epic “Tannhäuser/Derive” has been released.
The track is the first single from the previously announced Refused tribute album The Shape of Punk to Come Obliterated — a re-imagining of the band’s iconic 1998 album. It’s set to drop November 8th as part of a deluxe box set via Epitaph (pre-order here).

Twelve bands were approached to “rearrange or deconstruct” a song, and fellow Swedes Cult of Luna were an apt choice for the project, taking on the expansive “Tannhäuser/Derive.”
The original song contrasts haunting instrumental sections with bursts of acerbic hardcore. However, in the hands of Cult of Luna, the instrumental sections are transposed as lush post-rock meditations, and the harsh hardcore becomes tectonic sludge metal.

Junichiro Tanizaki‘s novel “Manji,” which translates to “Swastika” and later given the English title “Quicksand,” is a popular erotic story of obsession, jealousy, and destruction surrounding a four-way bisexual love affair that develops between upper-class citizens, the four lovers meant to comprise the Buddhist swastika symbolically. This iconic literary work has seen numerous film adaptations throughout the years. However, the most famous and arguably best one comes from director Yasuzo Masumura with his 1964 classic “Manji,” also known by the titles “Swastika” and “All Mixed Up.” This version would notably have a screenplay written by Kaneto Shindo, who international moviegoers will best remember for directing the horror masterpiece “Onibaba.”
Manji is screening at Camera Japan
Plotwise, married woman and artist Sonoko Kakiuchi is unhappy with her marriage to her husband, Kotaro. While attending a private art school, she meets fellow student Mitsuko Tokumitsu, whose beauty and devilish charm entices Sonoko.

One of Banijay’s scripted centrepieces at the London TV Screenings, the Swedish crime drama “Fallen” (“Sanningen”), sees the first reunion of star actor Sofia Helin, writer Camilla Ahlgren, and Stockholm-based Filmlance International since the multi-season hit crime show “The Bridge” (2011-2018).
Their collaboration has paid off again as “Fallen” has wooed a first batch of global sellers – including MHz Choice for the U.S. and Canal ’s Polar for France – and more than 1.1 million combined viewers watched the first episode on Swedish commercial broadcaster TV4 last Christmas.
“This is 1/10of the Swedish population, which is astonishing these days, considering the series is based on an original idea,” said producer Anna Wallmark of Banijay-owned Filmlance.
Created by Ahlgren, who serves as head-writer, next to co-writers Martin Asphaug and Alex Haridi, the six-part series is, however, a very different type of noir to the cross-border iconic “The Bridge,” Lighter, more emotional.

Created by Ahlgren, who serves as head-writer, next to co-writers Martin Asphaug and Alex Haridi, the six-part series is, however, a very different type of noir to the cross-border iconic “The Bridge,” Lighter, more emotional.

For Issa Rae, music has always been an extra cast member on the call sheet.
The nine-time Emmy nominee has used music as a storytelling tool, extending the voices of her complex and comedic characters — from the groundbreaking series Insecure and to her current adventure Rap Sh!t to the web series that launched her career, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
“Music elevates the storytelling of everything. I write to music, [and] you can have a scene that plays out great but music will add that little bit of tension, or that spark, or that feeling. It will cement a scene in your brain,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “There are so many songs that I associate with specific scenes that have also, in turn, affected my life and my memories, and it just adds an extra feeling to that song. So, they really work hand-in-hand beautifully.”

While the idea of an estranged couple who find themselves in a soup, or rather, in quicksand, remembering their life together as they realize there may be no way to get out of it sounds horrifying and interesting, Quicksand fails to capture the mind. To begin with, the couple in peril really doesn’t give us any reason to root for them by the end of the film; rather, they’re more repulsive. There’s really no character arc, and they’re both quite obnoxious toward each other for most of the film, leaving no room for hope or satisfaction. It would’ve been better if they had walked away from each other by the end of the film. It’s such a shame that Shudder has such a wonderful opportunity but, more often than not, fails to deliver any kind of Shudder.

Shudder survival thriller Quicksand builds an entire premise around its namesake, leaving a bickering, estranged married couple trapped in a pit of despair. Director Andrés Beltrán and writer Matt Pitts approach the B-movie concept with a seriousness that nearly works for their efficient thriller, placing relevance on the emotional stakes for its leads over jungle thrills. It leaves the thrills underplotted in Quicksand, however.
An opening sequence introduces the unforgiving terrain; a pair of poachers prowl a dangerous area of the Colombian jungle called Las Arenas to hunt and retrieve valuable skin from a venomous snake. Cut to couple Josh (Allan Hawco) and his wife Sofia (Carolina Gaitán) as they head to a medical conference in Bogotá; but the car ride there is rife with friction despite Josh’s best efforts to diffuse the tension. The estranged couple is gearing up for divorce, making this business trip even more uncomfortable.

"No one's coming for us." Shudder has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Quicksand, made by Colombian filmmaker Andrés Beltrán. It's set to debut on Shudder starting in July for anyone who wants to watch. "Get ready to witness a gripping fight for survival and love as a hike through a Colombian rainforest takes a turn." While on a hike in Colombia, an America couple get stuck in quicksand. Unable to move, it becomes a struggle for survival, as they battle the elements of the jungle and a venomous snake, in order to escape to safety. Starring Carolina Gaitàn and Allan Hawco, along with Andrés Castañeda and Sebastian Eslava. It's funny that it took them so long to finally make a horror movie about quicksand, it was always one of those crazy things you talk about while growing up but never actually encounter in real life.

Hold The Fort, Coming Soon to Kickstarter, Casts Julian Smith: "Lucas and Jenny are getting settled in their new home when Jerry Klein, the Hoa president, knocks on their door. He invites them to the neighborhood's annual “Equinox Party.” Ready to embrace suburban life, Lucas excitedly accepts.
But this is no ordinary party...A banner hangs at the clubhouse's entrance: Welcome to the Equinox. Please don't die. There are talks of a portal to hell, dangerous mythical creatures, copious amounts of Moonshine, and a legendary gun wielding hero, McScruffy.
Lucas, thinking this is all a joke, hesitantly mingles with the other party guests when the inevitable happens.
The portal to hell opens...
And the first monsters attack."

You have to be of a certain vintage, an age where we all thought that one of the ways we could possibly die was by drowning in quicksand. It was such a frequent plot device of peril that if your favorite prime time show in the 70s or 80s did not feature at least one episode with the main characters getting caught in quicksand you wondered just how in touch with reality the showunners really were. Quicksand was a bonafide threat a few decades ago. Fast foward to 2023 and Andrés Beltrán wants to rekindle that fear of colloids once again with their film, Quicksand. Shudder will stream the survival thriller from July 14th and they released the trailer earlier today. Check it...

Björk offered a career-spanning performance to the crowd at Coachella 2023 with support from the Hollywood String Ensemble in a unique reprisal of her recently-concluded “Orkestral” concerts. To make the appearance extra special, she used more than 800 drones to create a light show above the stage.

The first day of Coachella was jam-packed with major artists making moves, while the second day seemed to revolve around pure pop. Sunday, day three, featured the weekend’s most eclectic lineup, with all kinds of genres represented on every stage. In the early afternoon, the Argentine rock band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs got people moshing, while GloRilla delivered hard-hitting bars just moments afterwards. Kali Uchis mesmerized the crowd with her luxe brand of R&b, and Björk transformed the festival into avant art in one of the most impressive and intricate performances of the evening.

There are a lot of famous villains in pop culture, but one stands head and shoulders above the rest. Ironically, it's your head and shoulders that this villain wants to submerge. I'm talking about quicksand.
If you take a poll, it is likely that no one you know has ever been trapped in quicksand. Yet, the danger of quicksand is one of the most over-exaggerated tropes in film and television. Pop culture has created a lot of silly fears over the years. Acid rain, World War III, and artificial intelligence taking over the world to name a few. But one thing kids fear over all others: quicksand. It almost claimed the life of Daisy Duke in "The Dukes of Hazzard." The Hulk was no match for its steely grip in "The Incredible Hulk." And poor Sarah from "One Life to Live" spent several episodes trapped in it!
