"Agats production presents" ,the credits reads : and, coincidence , the plot recalls Dame Agatha Christie : a murder mystery which is linked to another one which happened a long time ago;besides ,the victim is an (American ,not English) novelist whose new book could be dangerous were it published.
There the comparison ends :in Mrs Christie 's detective stories (except for "death comes as the end ",who took place in ancient Egypt) in orient ,the characters were never natives, but English people living abroad .
On lady Winsley 's Turkish island , the suspects are all to be found on the place : and the Turkish Poirot had new technology ,based on DNA . He comes against ancient traditions, omerta , solidarity ("we're all cousins) ,and a certain hostility : he is a Kurd ,and his tragic past is revealed by a perhaps a bit overpossessive mom, hence the importance of the female principal ,not only to translate the book ,but also to provide a moral pillow for a tormented soul.
From pure murder mystery ,the thriller turns political and there are many hints at the suffering of Kurdish people, the denial of their language and their culture ....which the detective deeply feels.
This is an intriguing whodunit : who killed Lady Winsley is much less important than why he did it.
