Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

That’s because, a year ago, Layla (Milian) met what she believed to be the man of her dreams after her flight got cancelled. They agreed to meet up one year later, at the concert. But, when she goes to buy her ticket, it’s already sold out.

Exclusive: Hello (Again), a short drama series co-created by Simu Liu and Natalie Younglai, has landed distribution at Flourishing Films and will launch at the American Film Market.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Liu made the show, which is billed as a “time-jumping rom-com” with Natalie Younglai. With each of the nine episodes running to ten minutes, the show was first commissioned by Canadian pubcaster CBC for its streaming service CBC Gem and launched in March 2022. The gap between the launch and international distribution acquisition is unusually long for TV, but includes scope for future episodes of the drama.

Plot follows the romance between chef Jayden and ER resident Avery, who get another chance at love after their unceremonious breakup when Jayden is hurled back in time. Directed by Melanie Chung, the series stars Alex Mallari Jr. and Rong Fu as Avery.

100 Dragons Media, which is the short form and docs arm of indie motion picture maker 100 Dragons, is the producer. Exec producers are 100 Dragons President and founder Teresa M. Ho (Frankie Drake Mysteries), Liu, Younglai (Coroner) and Mallari Jr. Ho negotiated the deal with Efuru Flowers, CEO and founder of Flourishing Films.

It was developed in association with CBC, with the financial participation of the Bell Fund, Canada Media Fund, Ontario Creates and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit. All creators and writers are Indigenous, Black or people of color, as is the majority of key crew.

The series won best Drama Pilot in the Digital Short Series category at the influential Denver festival SeriesFest.

“We are thrilled to welcome Hello (Again) to the Flourishing Films slate,” said Flowers. “It’s a compelling series that resonates with audiences globally, and we see tremendous potential for expanding its reach. We’re eager to collaborate with partners who share our passion for this story and are excited about the opportunity to produce a second season, bringing even more of Hello (Again) to viewers worldwide.”

The LA-based distributor has been building a slate of films and series focused on diverse and underrepresented stories. It has struck deals with the likes of Hulu, BET and Criterion and recently launched a YouTube movie channel to expand reach.

“From our first meeting at the European Film Market, we are thrilled to have found the alignment of our visions between 100 Dragons and Flourishing Films,” added 100 Dragons’ Ho. “We are excited to have partners with us who have similar mandates as we bring our project to the international marketplace and for any future episodes of Hello (Again).”

AFM starts today in Vegas and runs until November 10, with the U.S. on tenterhooks ahead of the results of the Presidential election, which takes place in coming hours across the country.

The Canadian indigenous TV drama Little Bird has grabbed a field-leading 19 nominations heading into the Canadian Screen Awards.

Exclusive: The Kumars are plotting a return — this time on American television. Fox has ordered a presentation for multi-camera comedy Meet The Kumars, a followup to the award-winning 2001 BBC series The Kumars At No. 42. Most of the original cast is back for the U.S.-flavored revival of the family sitcom/talk show.

Fox also has come in as a partner on The Donut (working title), a single-camera family business comedy in development at Canada’s CBC from Catherine Reitman and Philip Sternberg, stars of CBC/Netflix’s popular comedy Workin’ Moms, which Reitman created.

The two commissions are part of Fox’s international content expansion, which involves developing and producing scripted series with local creators and studios in English-language territories, currently Canada and the UK and ultimately Australia as well.

Exclusive: Canadian comedy Run the Burbs has been picked up by Hulu for its second window in the U.S.

Fifth Season struck the deal with the streamer for the comedy from Kim’s Convenience star Andrew Phung, with the first two seasons set to drop on Hulu on New Year’s Eve, a few days before the third launches on Canada’s CBC.

Produced by Pier 21 Films, Run the Burbs stars Phung at the center of a Vietnamese/South Asian-Canadian family. He plays a stay-at-home dad with an entrepreneur wife and two kids, who each take a different approach to living life to the fullest in the suburbs, changing the way the audience thinks about family values and suburban life. Alongside Phung, the series stars a number of established and emerging comedians including YouTuber Julie Nolke, radio host Ali Hassan and Baroness von Sketch Show co-creator and star Aurora Browne.

True Detective actress Anna Lambe has nabbed the lead role in an untitled Arctic-set comedy for Netflix and the CBC and Aptn in Canada.

Lambe will play a young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, in Canada’s north, playing her daughter Bun. Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis from the producers.

Lambe, who is from Iqaluit, Nunavut, made her film debut in The Grizzlies, and then co-starred in CBC indigenous drama Trickster. Lambe also guest-starred on other series like Alaska Daily and the fourth season of HBO’s True Detective, set to debut in winter 2024.

The comedy from Red Marrow Media and Northwood Entertainment has also tapped Anna Adams to be the producing director ahead of production set to start in Nunavut in spring 2024.

Everyone I know who has watched “Workin’ Moms” can’t stop singing its praises, and I am with them.

It’s easy to see why the show has been receiving rave reviews! With its reflection on real-life issues, such as postpartum depression, the difficulties of teenage years, and the need for balance between parenting and personal ambition, and a triumphant finale.

Netflix’s Bridgerton prequel had a big opening — one that also boosted interest in its parent show.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story debuted at No. 1 in Nielsen’s streaming rankings for May 1-7. The six-episode prequel, which premiered May 4, had 1.89 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week, easily outpacing every other title. Nielsen also notes that viewing for Bridgerton tripled for the week, coming in at 125 million minutes (though well outside the top 10 original series).

The 1.89 billion minutes of viewing for Queen Charlotte is equal to 31.47 million hours, a little over 20 percent of the worldwide total (148.28 million hours) that Netflix reported for the show’s opening week (Nielsen and Netflix use different methodologies for their measurement, so the Nielsen figure is a rough estimate of how much of the show’s audience came from the U.S.).

John Mulaney’s first stand-up comedy special in five years got off to a solid start on Netflix.

The special, John Mulaney: Baby J, gathered 379 million minutes of viewing for the week of April 24-30, ranking 10th among original series (it premiered on April 25). It’s the second stand-up special to make the Nielsen streaming rankings this year, after Chris Rock: Selective Outrage. The latter, Netflix’s first live stand-up special, opened with 418 million minutes (albeit over less than 36 hours from its March 4 premiere) and grew to 798 million the following week.

The Diplomat was the No. 1 overall title for the second week in a row. The Netflix political drama starring Keri Russell grew by about 7 percent week to week, hitting 1.39 billion minutes of watch time. The back half of Firefly Lane’s second (and final) season pushed that show over the billion-minute mark as well; it recorded 1.11 billion minutes of viewing.

Netflix’s already-renewed The Diplomat was No. 1 on Nielsen’s U.S. ranking of streaming originals for a second straight week, by amassing 1.4 billion minutes viewed across Season 1’s eight episodes.

The Keri Russell starrer, Nielsen notes, had the oldest-skewing audience of any title in the Top 10 for the week of April 24, with two-thirds of its viewers being over 50.

As it moves through its third (and rumored final) season, the popular Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” has achieved its highest weekly viewership as measured by Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings. The comedy was watched for 795 million minutes from April 24 to April 30, landing in the No. 6 position overall.

It should be noted that this series high comes in comparison to previous weeks of Season 3 alone, as Apple TV+ viewership was not measured on Nielsen’s charts until this year. However, it remains a triumphant week for the streamer, which also has the Ana de Armas and Chris Evans-led film “Ghosted” on Nielsen’s movies chart for the second week in a row, this time at No. 8 with 181 million minutes watched.

Shonda Rhimes’ reign continues with her latest win, “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.” The “Bridgerton” prequel series, which opened on May 4, earned 148.28 million hours viewed on the Netflix Top 10 chart during the May 1-7 viewing window, making it the streamer’s most viewed title this week. With its six episodes, the series picked up over 22 million views in its first week. Netflix calculates total views by dividing the hours viewed (148.28 million) by total runtime hours (6.49 hours).

The “Firefly Lane” girls rejoined this week’s rankings with the final half of Season 2’s release. During the April 24-30 viewing window, the series earned 43.49 million hours viewed with the addition of its final seven episodes and landed in third on the Netflix’s Top 10 English-language TV chart.

Meanwhile, “The Diplomat” continued to lead the list of titles with 66.46 million hours viewed. Since its premiere, the show has quickly raked in over 18 million views. Netflix calculates total views by dividing the total hours viewed (123.95 million hours viewed) by its total runtime (6.76 hours). With its quick success, the streamer speedily announced a Season 2 renewal just one week after its debut.

Debuting on this week’s list is “Sweet Tooth” Season 2, which placed second among the English-Language TV titles with 48.34 million hours viewed. Season 1 also re-entered the list at No. 6 with 19.23 million hours viewed as viewers revisited or watched the show for the first time.

Netflix’s political drama “The Diplomat” has maintained the top spot on Netflix’s Top 10 TV list with 66.46 million hours viewed this week.

The Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell-led drama, which scored a quick Season 2 renewal at the streamer, reached the Top 10 in 84 countries with over 18 million views.

Just behind “The Diplomat” on the English TV list was “Sweet Tooth” Season 2, which debuted in the No. 2 spot on the list with 48.34 million hours viewed this week as Season 1 of the series also re-entered the list in the sixth most watched spot. The final installment of “Firefly Lane” Season 2 also made an impressive splash in the third spot on the list with 43.49 million hours viewed, while “Beef” locked down the No. 4 spot on the list as the revenge dramedy logged an additional 24.48 million hours viewed.

The Night Agent dropped out of the top three on Netflix’s list of most popular English-language TV shows for the week of April 24 to April 30. Meanwhile, The Diplomat held onto its crown.

The Diplomat ranked as No. 1 for the second week in a row with 66.46M viewing hours, which is up fairly significantly from its premiere week viewership.

Season 2 of Sweet Tooth took second place with 48.34M hours viewed. The debut of the second season, which hit Netflix on April 27, also boosted Season 1 back into the Top 10 at No. 6. The final seven episodes of Season 2 of Firefly Lane brought the second installment to No. 3 on the list with 48.34M hours viewed.

The series was created by and written by Catherine Reitman who also starred in the series. The show first premiered in 2017 on CBC Television, reaching American audiences two years later once it appeared on Netflix in 2019.

Netflix has jumped on board an untitled comedy to be shot in Canada’s Arctic for local broadcasters CBC and Aptn.

The homegrown Indigenous series is set to film in the Canadian territory of Nunavut and will center on a young Inuk mother who wants to build a new future for herself in her small Arctic town, but comes up against everyone knowing her business. There’s no word on casting, but the English-language comedy will have some local Inuktitut language spoken by the characters, according to producers.

The series from Northwood Entertainment and Red Marrow Media was created and will be written by Inuit screenwriter and producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Inuit filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril. Netflix will stream the comedy worldwide, and eventually in Canada, after local broadcast windows on the CBC and Aptn, the country’s Indigenous TV network.

Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

After years of spearheading a revival series, Kelsey Grammer is finally returning to reprise his iconic role as Frasier Crane which originated in Cheers before returning for his own eponymous spinoff that concluded in 2004. Coming to Paramount+, the Frasier sequel series will find the titular psychiatrist moving to a different city. This means that no other original cast members will be returning as series regulars, including some who were crucial to the sitcom's success, such as David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's younger brother Niles and Jane Leeves as Daphne Moon, whose relationship slowly progressed from Niles' secret infatuation to their eventual marriage over the course of several seasons.

The pair join series lead Kelsey Grammer as well as cast members Nicholas Lyndhurst and Jack Cutmore-Scott.

Plot details are being kept mostly under wraps for the series, but the official logline states, “Frasier is off to a different city with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge, and an old dream or two to finally fulfill. Frasier has re-entered the building!”

Catherine Reitman wanted to share stories of women trying — and often failing — to have it all. Fast forward seven seasons, 83 episodes and dozens of awards nominations (including two International Emmy nods), and she’s ready to put that baby to bed.

“Workin’ Moms” was born following the creator, showrunner, star and sometimes director’s own first Mother’s Day, which she missed while shooting an indie movie. Along with her husband Philip Sternberg (who plays her on-screen husband Nathan on the series), they created the production banner Wolf + Rabbit and sold what was initially going to be a premium cable project to FX.

Reitman had spent a lot of time growing up in Canada with her family (her father was late Canadian filmmaker Ivan Reitman), so when FX passed, she looked north and sold the series to CBC.

“Honest to God, I was so hopeful that I would get to Season 2,” Reitman recalls to Variety.

Exclusive: Saving Hope and Burden of Truth showrunner Adam Pettle has joined a newly formed content arm at Canada’s Vanguarde Artists Management.

Pettle, also an exec on CBC drama The Borough, will work alongside Tina Horwitz and Jay Horwitz at Vanguarde Pictures, which will be based in Toronto and focus on developing scripted content for cable, broadcast, streaming and podcasts.

Tina Horwitz, who founded Vanguarde Artists Management, will be Co-Head of Vanguarde Pictures alongside Jay Horwitz.

“This is a very natural progression for Adam and for us collectively,” said Tina Horwitz. “We’re lucky to have had some very rewarding relationships working with clients as producers, and we look forward to giving these efforts more oxygen.”

Along with managing clients, she has been executive producer on CBC and Netflix series Workin’ Moms, which is nearing the end of a seven-season run.
