One of the best performances of Kristen Stewart's career is coming to Netflix next month. Though her breakout roles came in David Fincher's Panic Room, Zathura: A Space Adventure, and Into the Wild, Stewart has been synonymous with Bella Swan and The Twilight Saga for much of her career, starring in the five franchise films from 2008 to 2012. In those five films, Stewart's performance as Bella was widely panned, which led to her being unfairly labeled as an emotionless actress.

After starring in another big-budget production, 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Stewart shifted her focus to indie projects and, just like her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, reinvented herself as an actor. During the remainder of the 2010s, Stewart starred in the dramas Camp X-Ray, Still Alice, and Equals, but began garnering critical acclaim for her collaborations with director Olivier Assayas in Clouds of Sils Maria and Personal Shopper.

Underwater has turned out to be a return to form to claustrophobic horror films from the ‘70s and ‘80s with the creature feature going out on a big note that has heavy implications for the future. William Eubanks crafts a very isolated horror film that at many points feels like Alien, but in the very best possible way. Kristen Stewart headlines a cast of strong character actors who find themselves trapped in their underwater research laboratory after an earthquake rocks their oil-drilling expedition. Their mission to survive becomes more dangerous when they realize that they’re not alone and that their oil drilling has grabbed the attention of a ferocious creature.

The complications of their laboratory and equipment push the crew to traverse the ocean floor. They get picked off one-by-one by these mysterious creatures. Matters get worse when they come across an entire nest of these deadly humanoid sea...

While many gravitate to spaceship-set horror, I find underwater horror stories to be equally terrifying, especially considering how little of the ocean we've actually explored. That's why I'm really excited that Morning Star co-creators Tim Daniel and David 'Db' Andry have reunited for Crush Depth, a brand-new horror/action comic book series from Mad Cave Studios. Director Doug Liman says he’s making Deeper, a ‘scary’ undersea supernatural thriller, with Tom Cruise as its star.

Director Doug Liman and Tom Cruise have long planned to work together again after collaborating on Edge Of Tomorrow and American Made. And according to a new report, that is still set to happen – just not in the guise we expected. When thinking about a Liman/Cruise collaboration at Warner Bros, a sequel to 2014’s Edge Of Tomorrow might spring to mind – but no, it seems like the duo could be cooking up something different.

Showbiz411’s Roger Friedman (via World of Reel) quotes Doug Liman as saying that his next film will be Deeper, starring Tom Cruise. It’s a project that Warner Bros has reportedly been trying to get off the ground for a decade under the stewardship of several different filmmakers.

Thanksgiving fans have another thing to be grateful for this year: the original motion picture soundtrack is coming to vinyl from Waxwork Records.

Composed by Emmy winner Brandon Roberts, the score is pressed on “Pumpkin Pie & Blood Swirl” colored vinyl.

It’s housed in a heavyweight gatefold jacket featuring artwork by Steve Reeves. An 11×11 booklet with liner notes by director Eli Roth is included.

Expected to ship in February, the Thanksgiving soundtrack costs $35.

Russell Crowe is ready to get fitted for gilded armor again after signing on for The Last Druid, an upcoming action film set in his old stomping grounds, the Roman Empire. It’s been 25 years since Crowe took up his sword and shield for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator. Still, that won’t keep him from exploring a time of blood, sand, and violence.

Throughout the 2010s, Brian Duffield more than did his part to keep the art of the original genre movie alive and thriving. Between his screenplays for the babysitter slasher-comedy "The Babysitter," the post-apocalyptic monster adventure "Love and Monsters," and the underwater survival thriller "Underwater", Duffield emerged as one of the hottest talents in Hollywood before fully coming into his own as the writer-director behind the well-received high school horror rom-com "Spontaneous" and essentially dialogue-free alien invasion thriller "No One Will Save You" in the 2020s. Occasionally, an incredible sci-fi film comes along, and it is always surprising when a film of such caliber never receives a sequel. Sometimes, it feels as though there are still stories left to tell. In instances like these, a concept introduced by the science fiction world presented in the film is so fun or groundbreaking that a sequel seems like an obvious next step. Yet some of the best science fiction films of all time never received sequels.

Other sci-fi movies have gone on to become big-budget franchises, spawning film after film in order to satisfy fans, or disappoint them when they fizzle out at the end. However, while some movie franchises got too big for their own good, other singular sci-fi films deserve to have sequels made, if only to further explore the interesting concepts they originally brought to life.

Following the box office success of Immaculate and especially Longlegs, Neon is back on the big screen with their latest horror offering Cuckoo, which has been earing rave reviews from critics and horror fans alike. It’s undoubtedly a far less mainstream horror movie than Longlegs, however, and it was only released in 1,503 theaters nationwide over the weekend.

How did Cuckoo fare in its opening weekend at the box office? It’s no Longlegs but Neon is surely smiling at the indie horror movie’s $3,012,500 opening weekend this morning. Interesting to note, Cuckoo is currently sitting in the #9 spot on the domestic box office charts, with Longlegs making another $2 million over the weekend and finding itself in the #10 spot.

Laika is getting serious about its live-action output, with a new project called “Crumble” to be written and directed by Brian Duffield and produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

“Crumble” will tell the tale of “a married couple who go on a world-traversing adventure in the hope of finding a cure to an ancient curse.”

The announcement was made by Laika’s president of live-action film and series Matt Levin. “We’re so excited to partner with Brian and the entire team at Lord Miller on this special film,” he said in a Tuesday statement. “Brian has such a singular voice and ‘Crumble’ perfectly embodies the bold, emotional and inventive storytelling that we champion at Laika. Lord Miller is in a class of its own and we could not ask for a better creative team to bring this story to life.”

Aditya Sood will produce for Lord Miller alongside Duffield.

Underrated horror gems often dismissed by critics for relying on jump scares and gore for effect. Critically-acclaimed horror movies may still be misunderstood or underappreciated due to genre bias. Even commercial successes like Jeepers Creepers can be considered average by critics, despite unique elements.

Not all the best horror movies are immediately recognized as such, with some genuine gems of the genre falling by the wayside of critical appeal. Horror movies have often had a contentious relationship with serious cinema critics, easily dismissed as low-brow entertainment reliant on jump scares and gore to get a reaction out of audiences. This can often make it difficult for critics to accurately assess even the greatest horror movies of all time.

Occasionally, critics are able to split the difference between films that raise enough eyebrows to not be considered altogether bad, but aren't enough to be recognized as the great movies they are.

It’s not just the creature effects and craftmanship laid bare; a monster’s reveal means the horror is no longer up to the viewer’s imagination.

When to reveal the monstrous threat is just as important as How, and few contemporary creature features have delivered a monster reveal as surprising or as cool as 2020’s Underwater.

The Setup

Director William Eubank’s aquatic creature feature, written by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) and Adam Cozad (The Legend of Tarzan), is set around a deep water research and drilling facility, Kepler 822, at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, sometime in the future.

I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.

And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. Last August, we heard that Imagine Entertainment had picked up the film rights to Daniel Kraus’s “swallowed by a whale” thriller novel Whalefall (you can buy a copy at This Link) and now Deadline has a cool update on the project: 20th Century Studios has come out the winner in a bidding war over the Whalefall theatrical distribution rights, and Brian Duffield – who recently worked with 20th Century on the alien invasion film No One Will Save You – has signed on to co-write, direct, and produce the film.
