Death has always been on Stephen King's macabre mind, so it's difficult to say whether, at the age of 77, he's more engaged with the subject than usual. The author has stared the Reaper down at least a couple of times in his life, via the stranglehold of addiction earlier in his career and, in 1999, the car accident that left him in a Maine hospital for a month with life-threatening injuries (and gave us the delirious howl that is "Dreamcatcher"). If nothing else, he respects the notion of dying to know he doesn't want to do it, but that he will and there's no guarantee it'll go down peacefully.
When he was interviewed in 2013 while writing "Joyland" for the Hard Case Crime imprint, King was asked if he'd planned for his death as an author -- by which his questioner meant had he socked away a finished book or two...

The career of genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is strongly tied to the works of author Stephen King. Flanagan has directed film adaptations of the King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. He tried and failed to bring an adaptation of King’s Revival to the screen. His upcoming film The Life of Chuck is another King adaptation, he’s developing the author’s Dark Tower saga as a Prime Video series, and we recently heard that he’ll be turning Carrie into an eight episode Prime Video series. He knows his King – which is why Movieweb asked him to name some of the most underrated King adaptations. Flanagan gladly did, mentioning a few great ones.
When Movieweb asked which King adaptations he thinks are underrated, Flanagan answered, “You know what jumped immediately to my mind? The Night Flier with Miguel Ferrer is a really good movie that I don’t...

Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" saga — which comprises eight novels, a novella, and a children's book — can be considered his magnum opus. The sheer breadth of its story, along with its breathtaking mishmash of genres, helped create an epic that embodies unfiltered storytelling. Magic is an integral aspect of "The Dark Tower," as exemplified by the existence of the Man in Black, along with demons, mutants, and the titular Tower itself. In many ways, "The Dark Tower" resists adaptation. For starters, the depth of this engrossing, fantastical story cannot be encapsulated in a single installment, and the best aspects of the saga demand an interiority that is best experienced in the written format.
Nevertheless, attempts to adapt "The Dark Tower" for the screen have been made, with 2017's "Dark Tower" movie emerging as a failed adaptation that sidesteps the wonderful strangeness of the original books for some reason. It...

Since 2017, acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan has been adapting some of Stephen King‘s trickiest books, much to the joy of horror films everywhere. 2017’s Gerald’s Game, 2019’s Doctor Sleep, and this year’s The Life of Chuck have all been well received, despite being difficult to imagine on-screen before he made it happen. Now Flanagan is working on a Dark Tower series and an eight-episode Carrie series. Unlike some who attempt to bring the Horror Maestro’s works to the screen, Flanagan really understands the essence of King’s storytelling: “I don’t think people give [King] enough credit for the humanist he is and for the enormous heart that beats behind all the horror,” Flanagan told Deadline in September. “His horror works because he’s a man who really loves his characters. It’s about the people.” Since Stephen King adaptions can live or die by the screenwriters and directors involved,...

Exclusive: Molly C. Quinn (Castle) and Cameron Cuffe (Krypton) have wrapped on The Weight, a psychological thriller marking the feature directorial debut of American Gods producer Sallyanne Massimini, who co-wrote the script with Thomas Care.
Shot in Ontario, Canada, with production led by Exit 44 Entertainment and Palo Pictures, the film centers on Mia (Quinn), who wakes up chained in a remote cabin, only to witness her captor, David (Cuffe), burying a body outside. Knowing she’ll be next, she breaks free and flees through treacherous cliffs and waterfalls while David, haunted by remorse and grief, pursues her relentlessly through the wilderness.
Ty Leisher (11th Hour Cleaning) and Eric Brodeur (The Haunting of the Mary Celeste) produced for Exit 44 Entertainment.
Stated Massimini, “Filming in freezing temperatures at a waterfall, the demanding physicality of Molly’s stunts and body burns, and the quick pivot to highly emotionally charged scenes with Cameron.

Stephen King is known for his works of horror, but every now and then, he strays outside of his established genre. His anthology book "Different Seasons" forgoes the supernatural for more grounded stories like "The Body" (adapted to the screen as "Stand By Me") and "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption". One of King's more recent non-horror books was "Billy Summers," a drama-thriller published in 2021. At times, "Billy Summers" reads as if King binged a bunch of episodes of the great HBO series "Barry" and said, "Let me try that, but without the jokes."
The story follows a Marine sniper-turned-hitman, the titular Billy Summers, who is ready to get out of the "killing people" business. He agrees to take one last job, and this job requires some prep work, including creating a cover story. The cover story Billy concocts has him posing as a writer penning a book, and to help sell the illusion,...

Stephen King is one of the most celebrated and iconic horror writers of all time, but he's also a storyteller whose work has been adapted into dozens of movies and TV shows with, shall we say, mixed results. While some of the very best films of all time are based on King's work like "The Shining" and "The Shawshank Redemption," there are plenty of utter trash movies that have a "based on the novel by Stephen King" credit. Still, even if they may be a toss coin in terms of quality a lot of the time, any new Stephen King adaptation is at least worth paying attention to.

Mike Flanagan with Rebecca Ferguson from Doctor Sleep – now adapting the Stephen King novel, Carrie [Image @flanaganfilm on Instagram]
Mike Flanagan is renowned for his horror TV shows and is once again teaming up with Stephen King for an adaptation of Carrie.
Carrie was Stephen King’s first published book and nearly didn’t happen. However, after he threw it into the garbage, his lovely wife, Tabitha King, rescued it and encouraged him to publish the terrifying book. Of course, there have been many more King books published, and while may be in the past, horror maestro Mike Flanagan is returning to Stephen King’s world to adapt Carrie as a series on the small screen.

Admittedly, Stephen King fans will feel a little trepidation over the adaptation of the author’s popular book, as many have not done his work justice.

Some very exciting news for horror fans this evening, as Mike Flanagan is re-teaming with Stephen King for a new small-screen adaptation of the legendary's author's first novel, Carrie.
Deadline reports that the pair - who recently collaborated on the upcoming The Life of Chuck - are developing the supernatural coming-of-rage tale as an eight-episode series for Amazon, with Flanagan on board as showrunner and exec producer.
Brian De Palma's 1976 take on the book is widely viewed as one of the better King adaptations, with Sissy Spacek delivering a terrifying and tragic turn as the title character, who begins to manifest destructive telekinetic abilities after being relentlessly bullied by her classmates and tormented by her domineering religious fanatic mother. John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley and William Katt also starred.
The movie's climactic bloodbath is often hailed as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

It's hard to be down in the dumps when the start of the work week brings the news that horror maestro and Stephen King aficionado Mike Flanagan has been tapped to adapt the King's monumental first novel, "Carrie," as a TV series. Flanagan has consistently knocked it out of the park with his adaptations of King's work, like turning the seemingly unadaptable "Gerald's Game" into one of the best King movies ever made and doing the impossible with "Doctor Sleep" by bridging King's novel with the imagery of Stanley Kubrick's take on "The Shining." As of publication, Flanagan is set to release "The Life of Chuck" in 2025 after a successful premiere out of the Toronto International Film Festival, and is working to crack the script for his take on "The Dark Tower." Flanagan is a magician when it comes to picking and choosing which aspects of King's books to...

One of horror's most famous and influential stories is receiving its most significant adaptation in years, and we couldn't possibly think of anyone more suited for the task. Mike Flanagan has made a career out of taking prolific author Stephen King's written words and spinning them into live-action gold, from 2017's "Gerald's Game" all the way to his well-received prequel to "The Shining" with "Doctor Sleep" in 2019. Along the way, Flanagan has also built himself a veritable television empire, debuting multiple spine-tingling limited series for Netflix in the span of just a few years. This latest news brings together the best of both worlds, as Deadline reports that Flanagan is setting his sights on a series adaptation of "Carrie" -- the very first (and arguably most daunting) of all of King's works.

Deadline reports that Flanagan is working with King to turn the story of Carrie into an eight episode series that will be released through Amazon’s Prime Video service. Flanagan will be executive producing the series with Trevor Macy. Deadline notes, “They’re opening a writer’s room, so this one’s happening quickly.”
Flanagan has previously directed film adaptations of the King novels Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep. His upcoming film The Life of Chuck is another King adaptation – and he’s also known to be developing the author’s Dark Tower saga as a Prime Video series.

Mike Flanagan is headed back into the world of Stephen King with a brand new small screen adaptation of King’s classic novel Carrie for Amazon, Deadline reports this morning.
The plan? An eight-episode television series adaptation of the iconic horror tale.
Deadline recaps, “The 1974 novel put the young author King on the map, and also bolstered his worth as an author whose genre storytelling was most translatable to the big screen in 1976. Brian De Palma was the first director to adapt King’s coming of age story. Several follow-ups came later, including The Rage: Carrie 2, a 2002 telepic, and a 2013 remake.”
Previous filmmakers to tackle the story for screens big and small include the aforementioned Brian De Palma as well as Katt Shea, David Carson & Bryan Fuller, and Kimberly Peirce, with the titular role being played by Sissy Spacek, Angela Bettis, and Chloe Grace Moretz.

The series logline describes it as a “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
Flanagan will write and executive produce the potential series with Intrepid Picture’s Trevor Macy also serving as an executive producer. Flanagan will also serve as showrunner. Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project for Intrepid. Flanagan is currently under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

Mike Flanagan's "Doctor Sleep" is a miracle of a movie. It's a faithful adaptation of author Stephen King's 2013 novel of the same name, which itself is a follow-up to King's novel version of "The Shining" from 1977. It's also, however, a sequel (and a bit of a legacy sequel at that) to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 cinematic adaptation of "The Shining," and it's this latter aspect which still seems staggeringly impossible to do on paper, even as Flanagan ended up deftly proving that it was very possible. After all, upon taking on "Doctor Sleep," Flanagan was facing numerous obstacles: first and foremost, a sequel to a Kubrick movie is a daunting prospect all by itself. The second, even tougher issue involves King's infamous distaste for Kubrick's film; given the disparities between Kubrick's movie and King's novel, and the fact that those differences make up the bulk of contention between author and filmmaker,...

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

When I find myself talking to someone familiar with Joel Anderson’s 2008 film (which isn’t often; it remains criminally underseen), our eyes usually go wide, our pitches rise and soon we’re giddily gesturing and speaking in half-thoughts like two people who share a great secret.
It’s a humble film on the surface, a faux documentary chronicling a grieving family who may or may not be experiencing a haunting after the accidental death of their teenage daughter, Alice. It forgoes scares and startles for an ephemeral, inexplicable sense of dread that immediately seeps into the viewer, and I feel it just as acutely today — 20 viewings later — as I did the first time I wandered into Anderson’s deceptive labyrinth of tension,...

“Salem’s Lot” (2024), based on Stephen King’s chilling novel, brings to life the terrifying story of a small town plagued by a vampire infestation. Now streaming on Max, as a hallmark of supernatural horror, it combines the eerie isolation of a town with a creeping, ancient evil, creating an atmosphere thick with tension and dread. If you’re a fan of the gothic and supernatural horror elements in “Salem’s Lot”, here’s a list of other movies that like the King adaptation evoke themes of dark forces lurking within seemingly ordinary places.

It’s hard to imagine a year going by without one of Stephen King’s horror stories being adapted for the big or small screen.
Some of those adaptations have gone on to be some of the most recognizable movies around – films like “The Shining,” “The Shawshank Redemption,” and “The Green Mile” to name a few – but a disturbing trend lately is circling back to certain stories for new attempts at adapting.
“It” got split into two movies at the end of the 2010s, “Pet Semetary” has had multiple films, “The Stand” has received multiple limited series adaptations, and now “Salem’s Lot” has been done for the third time. It’s time for something new.

Mike Flanagan has cemented himself as one of horror's truly great modern storytellers. From his miniseries on Netflix like "The Haunting of Hill House" to underrated gems such as "Hush," the man has earned the trust of viewers. He's also earned the trust of Stephen King, as Flanagan has made two movies based on the author's work; "Gerald's Game" and "Doctor Sleep." In both of those cases, the material was incredibly difficult to adapt, yet Flanagan got it done. While the filmmaker isn't through with King, there is a project that he wishes hadn't gotten away from him.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about his new King adaptation "The Life of Chuck," Flanagan was asked if there was a project that he felt was "the one that got away." He was quick to cite his planned adaptation of King's 2014 novel "Revival," which he wrote a script for before the project ultimately fell apart.

A middling adaptation of the 1975 novel proves to be a lacklustre non-event even for hardcore genre fans

Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the Stephen King novella The Life of Chuck has landed distribution.
Neon will release the movie that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, going on to win the audience award. The anthology film is told in three parts and focuses on the life, internal and external, of Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill also star.
While Flanagan has adapted other King works, specifically in the horror genre, The Life of Chuck has drawn closer comparisons to Frank Darabont’s Shawshank Redemption.
Talking to THR ahead of TIFF, Flanagan said of speaking with King, “When we were doing The Life of Chuck, we talked a lot before production. He has an enormous amount of approvals on things like casting and other details. But when the movie goes, he stays very far away. He says, ‘The movie’s yours and the book is mine.
