[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Barry” Season 4.]
“Barry” Season 4 is effectively split in half. The first four episodes take place in the regular flow of the three seasons that came before it, however ominous things have gotten for the people at the center. But the end of Episode 4 brings quite the cliffhanger, with characters suddenly living in a visibly different future. It’s the classic farewell season time jump.
That big storytelling swing led to some dramatic physical changes, too. In Episodes 5 and 6, when the show catches up with its main characters, they’ve each transformed in their own way. Sally (Sarah Goldberg) is going by Emily, Gene (Henry Winkler) has flowing locks and a thick beard, and Fuches (Stephen Root) has a whole body’s worth of elaborate tattoos.
In some cases where hair changes to show the passage of time, it’s an opportunity for an actor to really grow things out and get physically connected to the character,...

“Barry” is the latest critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning series to say those four little words: “Fourth and final season.” HBO’s dark comedy will end after its upcoming season, co-creator Bill Hader announced Tuesday in an interview with Variety. The news was accompanied by a premiere date – which comes surprisingly soon – and a teaser trailer.
The trailer picks up where Season 3 left off, with aspiring actor/professional hitman Barry Berkman (Hader) in prison after being lured into a trap by his acting teacher and mentor Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). In the teaser, Barry makes phone calls and sees visions of the people important to him. In one call, he breaks down as he tells someone he loves them. In what could be the same call or a different one, Gene says to him, “Hey Barry, I got you.” And in the last one at the end of the teaser, he growls “So help me God,...

“Elvis” director of photography Mandy Walker won Feature Film at the ASC Awards March 5, when the American Society of Cinematographers handed out its honors at the 37th annual awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Walker’s win in the feature film category could prove prescient; 17 out of the last 36 years found the ASC film winner winning the Academy Award. But it’s worth noting that Oscar nominees “Tár” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were not among the ASC nominees.
In the TV categories, “The Old Man” took awards for Motion Picture, Limited Series, or Pilot Made for Television and Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Commercial, while “Barry” won Episode of a Half-Hour Television Series for its Season 3 finale and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Non-Commercial for its Season 4 finale.

The American Society of Cinematographers handed out its best visual storytelling in feature film award to “Elvis” on Sunday night, and in doing so, Mandy Walker has become the first woman to win the top prize in the society’s history.
Walker triumphed over Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick” and Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”) in a very competitive race.
During her speech, she dedicated her win to “all the women who will win the award after me,” and was met with rapturous applause. She hoped for more women to break glass ceilings and continued, “This is an inclusive representative community. Let us all strive for success and show our mission and create art.”
Walker‘s triumph comes as Oscar voting ends on March 7, where she is also nominated. She became only the third woman ever nominated for cinematography for her work on “Elvis.

When Henry Winkler joined “Barry,” as the pompous, washed-up acting teacher Gene Cousineau, he soon asked series creator and star Bill Hader, “Am I playing an asshole?” But by Season 3, Cousineau has suffered a tremendous loss — at the hands of Barry — and it’s forcing him to do some deep introspection.
“I think the umbrella for Season 3 is, can a person change? It was a question Bill asked me in a scene in Season 2. And now it is for all of the characters,” Winkler tells Variety. “Is there atonement?”
On this episode of the “Variety Awards Circuit Podcast,” we talk to Emmy-winning “Barry” star Henry Winkler on how dark the show went this season, especially for his character, as well as what he hopes might come next.
But first, our Awards Circuit Roundtable discusses some of the key Creative Arts Emmys races coming this weekend, including animation and guest actor and actress.

Last Year’s Winner: Jason Sudeikis, “Ted Lasso”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: The Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Emmy has recently trended towards awarding people two years in a row, and then moving on to the next one. Bill Hader was the latest actor to win back-to-back years for “Barry” (2018 – 2019), however the show took a long enough hiatus to where should Hader win a third time, he would be the first actor to win this category for three seasons in a row since Michael J. Fox did for “Family Ties” in 1988. Also possible is last year’s winner Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) starting a hot streak this year, and Donald Glover winning again five years after his first acting Emmy for “Atlanta.”
Notable Ineligible Series: Michael Douglas “The Kominsky Method” (ended); William H. Macy, “Shameless” (ended); Ramy Youssef “Ramy” (Season 3 was not eligible.)

Ted Lasso‘s stars have once again played a blinder at the Emmy nominations — to borrow a phrase from AFC Richmond’s home city of London. This time the love has been shared around even further.
The second season of Apple TV ’s smash comedy matched its record-breaking 2021 haul to secure 20 nominations, and stars Jason Sudeikis, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, Sarah Niles, Toheeb Jimoh, Harriet Walter, James Lance and Sam Richardson all picked up acting nods.
“When I saw Toheeb, Sarah, James and Harriet had been nominated I genuinely burst into tears,” said Waddingham, who plays Rebecca Welton, AFC Richmond owner, and is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series. “For us to be all drawn up like this is magical.”
Given that the show is into its third season (episode nine of 12 just wrapped), Waddingham said the cast is “in shock” at the huge haul,...

Though 2020 was an unusual year to say the least, we luckily had a variety of new TV shows to keep us company. Many of these programs have become breakout hits and seemed destined to become a part of the awards conversation. As the Golden Globes approach, let’s take a look at some of the new series contending for awards. Click through the photo gallery above to see the nine new shows nominated, including “Lovecraft Country,” “Ted Lasso,” “The Flight Attendant” and “Perry Mason.” We do not include shows competing for the limited series categories.
While programs are more likely to be nominated in later seasons after they’ve had time to work out the kinks and build up an audience, a strong debut can still draw attention during awards season. In recent years, such titles as “The Morning Show,” “Pose,” “Killing Eve,” “Westworld,” “This Is Us,” and “Stranger Things...

You’ve heard that variety is the spice of life — and that couldn’t be more true when it comes to television awards. Increasingly, the TV awards season is shifting away from a myopic view of the medium that saw the Primetime Emmy Awards as the only arbiter of quality. By embracing a Winter TV awards season, other shows are given room to blossom, creating a wider array of contenders — all the better to represent TV’s continued boundary pushing.
All of which is to say that having the Golden Globe nominees and the Writers Guild of America nominees announced on the same day is absolutely wild.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is never afraid to blaze its own path when it comes to nominations for the Golden Globes — vacillating wildly between buzzy upstarts and movie stars with few stops in-between — while the WGA generally presents a more contemplative slate of nominees.

Michael Imperioli, who starred in HBO’s acclaimed “The Sopranos” as Christopher Moltisanti, is preparing to head back to HBO for a new series.
Variety reported that Imperioli is teaming with Alec Berg (“Barry”) to develop a scripted series in which the actor will star. The publication described the project as a “meta blend of fact and fiction loosely based on Imperioli’s experiences as a practicing Buddhist.” A prospective release date and additional casting details were not provided. Though the project’s tone is unclear, Berg’s filmography (including “Barry” and “Silicon Valley”) suggests that the series could have a comedic bent.
Imperioli and Berg will co-write and executive produce the series. Amy Solomon, who runs Berg’s production company, will also serve as an executive producer, according to Variety. Imperioli is no stranger to writing: He wrote five episodes of “The Sopranos” and also has writing credits on...

“What We Do in the Shadows,” the hilarious FX comedy about a trio of vampires living together on Staten Island with a human familiar, broke into the Emmys in a big way last year, earning eight nominations for its second season, including one for Best Comedy Series and three noms for comedy writing. Can the series, which was developed for TV by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, build on that momentum to win at the upcoming Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards? The answer is: maybe!
The sophomore series, which stars Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou, Harvey Guillén and Mark Proksch, is currently sitting in fifth place in Gold Derby’s latest odds for the top prize at the Globes, behind the final season of Pop TV’s “Schitt’s Creek,” the first seasons of Hulu’s “The Great” and Apple TV ’s “Ted Lasso,” and the second season of Hulu’s “Ramy.

Remember when Jodie Whittaker’s first run of Doctor Who didn’t feature any returning monsters at all? Well, since then the rules have definitely changed as she faced the Daleks, Cybermen and the Master in multiple episodes of season 12. This trend will only continue in the next outing, too, as the latest set photos have revealed that we can expect perhaps the show’s most terrifying villains to make a return.
Despite the UK being plunged into lockdown, which has affected many Hollywood productions, filming on Who is progressing unabated. This week, the team were caught shooting on Cold Knap Beach in Wales and while Whittaker was glimpsed wearing a big coat over her costume, the more shocking part of these pics is that they contain a Weeping Angel. Yes, the silent, stony killers are back to face off against the Thirteenth Doctor.

Ramy Youssef surprised many of us by winning the 2020 Golden Globe for Best TV Comedy Actor for his Hulu series “Ramy.” He even called us out for our odds, which predicted that he would lose (our bad!). He’s a contender again this year for his show’s second season, so we’d be wise not to underestimate him again, but it has been a decade since an actor went back-to-back in this category.

Even after HBO’s biggest hit ever, “Game of Thrones,” came to an end last year, the premium network is still going strong with hit shows like “Watchmen” and “Insecure.” That’s thanks in large part to Francesca Orsi and Amy Gravitt, the programming heads tasked with leading HBO into a new era.

During a year when laughter was in short supply, we’re feeling especially grateful for the 10 comedy series on our latest Year in Review list.
Earlier this week, we named our picks for the year’s best dramas — and though we enjoyed weeping along with Normal People‘s Marianne and Connell, or watching The Haunting of Bly Manor through our fingers, it was the comedies that provided 2020’s most fun viewing experiences.

Barack Obama is saying “yes, you can” to Drake’s ambition of playing the former president in a biopic.
In a new interview with Complex’s Speedy Morman, Obama gave the rapper his official “stamp of approval” should the opportunity arise.
“I will say this, Drake seems to be able to do anything he wants,” Obama told Morman. “I mean, that is a talented, talented brother. So if the time comes and he’s ready…”
Obama added that not only does he give Drake his blessing to portray him – but his daughters would, too.
“Drake has, more importantly, I think, my household’s stamp of approval. I suspect Malia and Sasha would be just fine with it,” Obama said.
Drake — who started his career acting in “Degrassi: The Next Generation” and “Charlie Bartlett” — first expressed interest in playing Obama in 2010 during an interview with Paper.

At last year’s Golden Globes, Netflix’s fan-fave comedy series “Dead to Me” earned just a single nomination in Best TV Comedy Actress for Christina Applegate. This year for it second season, Gold Derby’s predictions favor Applegate to receive a repeat bid and for the show to break into Best Comedy Series. Meanwhile, co-lead Linda Cardellini is predicted to just miss out on a nom, as she comes in seventh place on our chart.

Applegate plays Jen Harding on the dark comedy, a real estate agent who’s dealing with the aftermath of her husband’s death. Cardellini takes on the role of Jen’s out-of-nowhere new friend Judy Hale, who knows more than she’s letting on. Supporting actor contender James Marsden portrays twin brothers Steve and Ben Wood, both...

Dan Levy can’t duplicate his quadruple Emmy wins at the Golden Globes since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t have two of those categories, but he is predicted to take home two: as a producer on Best Comedy Series front-runner “Schitt’s Creek” and in Best TV Supporting Actor. If he pulls off the latter, he will definitely have the last laugh.
A Levy victory for his Emmy-winning performance would mark only the fourth time this century that the category has gone to an actor from a comedy. Robert Downey Jr. did it in 2001 for his comeback on “Ally McBeal,” followed by “Entourage’s” Jeremy Piven in 2008, aka the year of the writers’ strike, and most recently, “Glee” star Chris Colfer in 2011. So, yes, it’d be a decade between funny men triumphs.
