“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” star Robert Aramayo is set to play a Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner in upcoming biopic titled “I Swear.”
Directed by Kirk Jones (“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2”), who is returning for his first feature film in eight years, “I Swear” tells the story of Tourette’s Syndrome campaigner, John Davidson. Principal photography recently wrapped in Scotland.
“I Swear” follows Davidson’s journey with Tourette’s through his troubled teens and early adulthood, having been diagnosed at 15 years old in 1980s Britain – a time when the condition was little known and entirely misunderstood.
“Targeted as insane by his peers, Davidson lives with a condition few have ever witnessed, as he attempts to live a ‘normal’ life against the odds,” reads the synopsis.

Actor John Stamos has opened about his mental state at the time of his 2015 DUI and the series of events that led him to sobriety.
He said: “When I did get the DUI, I came home from the hospital that night,” reports Entertainment Weekly.
He told People magazine: “I sat down, I drank a bottle of wine just to forget what just happened. And I never sobered up.”
The actor, who has now been sober for eight years, said that he almost immediately had to leave home to film ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’ following the arrest.
As per Entertainment Weekly, he did not allow himself time to process, and his drinking didn’t stop once he was on set.
“When you sober up, you have to look at the ugly truth, so you keep drinking,” he said. “So I was kind of just loosely buzzed through the shooting of that movie.

Actor Alex Wolff – whose credits include The Naked Brothers Band, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, Patriots Day, My Friend Dahmer, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Hereditary, Pig, Old, and Oppenheimer – made his feature writing and directing debut with the 2019 drama The Cat and the Moon. By the time "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" hit theaters this year, a whole lot had happened between the popular franchise's second installment and its third. On screen, Nick (Louis Mandylor) got separated, Maria (Lainie Kazan) developed dementia, and Ian (John Corbett) retired. Offscreen, Andrea Martin gained new stardom playing demon-hunting nun Sister Andrea in the Paramount series "Evil," while the cast also lost one co-star -- Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021.
The new movie's plot hinges around the aftermath of patriarch Gus' (Constantine) death, as Toula (Nia Vardalos) explains in the film's trailer that it was Gus' last wish that the family visit his childhood village in Greece. Thus, instead of a wedding, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" actually centers around a family reunion with all the cultural flair you'd expect from the Portokalos family. If you missed the movie in theaters, you won't have to...

John Stamos appeared on “The Howard Stern Show” to promote his new memoir, “If You Would Have Told Me,” and revealed that his alcoholism got so bad around 2015 that he actually does not remember being on set to film his role in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.” The actor appeared to forget he even booked a part in the film and was reminded the day after his 2015 arrest for driving under the influence that he had to go to Toronto, Canada, to film.
In previous interviews, Stamos has said his 2015 DUI arrest was a definitive moment in convincing him that it was time to get sober. But it didn’t happen instantly. He told Stern that after he got home from jail, he “drank another bottle of wine by myself.”

It has been 25 years since Keri Russell graced the small screen in the iconic role of Felicity Porter.
Felicity, the J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves-produced college drama, was a critical darling of The WB, becoming a phenomenon well before "the big chop" controversy and often topping the list of young adult classics to this very day.
The series amassed 84 episodes over four seasons, and it was nominated for 38 awards, including a Golden Globe Best Actress nod for Keri Russell.
The series remains impactful, even two and a half decades later. And it's primarily due to the allure of the cast, many of whom are still going strong in their careers all these years later.
So, where is the cast of Felicity now? Check it out!

Warner Bros. Discovery is projecting huge losses from the impact of writer and actor strikes, but “Barbie” is still around to help them pay bills. It’s hardly news that as Greta Gerwig’s smash hit starts its initial post-theater platform release, it’s #1 on PVOD charts. The real story: that it’s doing so with a hefty premium price.
Gerwig’s #1 theatrical hit worldwide for 2023 (which will end up with around $1.5 billion in theatrical returns) is now renting on PVOD for $24.99, with the option to add it to your digital library permanently for $29.99. Studios recover 80 percent from revenues returned for these transactions, less a small slice for the carrier. That means Warner Bros. Discovery will recoup around $20 for each “Barbie” rental, $25 for each download. It’s a bonanza.
As always, how much actual money is involved with these transactions is not known, but if five million domestic homes rent the film,...

Gillian Anderson will also return as Otis’ (Butterfield) sex therapist mom. Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Nun II” is kicking off the fall box office with a $32.6 million opening weekend is making it likely that September will be a much better month for theaters than last year’s miserable slump.
While well short of the $53 million opening of the first “Nun” in 2018, “The Nun II” is meeting pre-release projections and is also in a similar range to past films in the “Conjuring” series. It tops the $24 million opening made by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” during Warner’s day-and-date experiment in 2021, and slides just below the $35 million opening of “Annabelle: Creation” in 2017.
“The Nun II” has also made $52.7 million from 70 overseas markets this weekend — including $8.9 million from Mexico — to give it an $85.3 million global start. Warner Bros. is anticipating a final global total of over $200 million, a solid result given that all of the “Conjuring” films have...

Based on Nia Vardalos' one-woman play of the same name, the 2002 indie romcom "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is one of the most astonishing box office tales in cinema history. It ranked in 20th place at the domestic box office on its opening weekend, but four months later it had climbed its way up to No. 2. It played in theaters for an entire year and ultimately grossed $368.7 million at the worldwide box office. Not bad for a movie made for just $5 million.
21 years later, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" has landed in theaters. This time Vardalos is behind the camera as director, as well as returning to star alongside John Corbett, the original groom of the original big fat Greek wedding. Per Deadline, the Focus Features film grossed $3.7 million on Friday and is heading for an estimated $9.5 million weekend. That's less than "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" scored in its 2016 debut,...

Warner Bros. and New Line’s “The Nun II” is kicking off the fall box office with a solid $32 million estimated opening weekend after grossing $13.1 million on Friday from 3,728 theaters, matching prerelease projections.
The first “Nun” was released in 2018 as a spinoff of New Line’s lucrative “Conjuring” horror series, and is the highest grossing film in the franchise with a $53 million domestic opening and a $365 million global box office total against a reported $22 million budget.
“Nun II” has never been projected to reach the heights of its predecessor, but is still beating the $24 million opening of the 2021 film “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” which released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming.
If walk-up traffic is higher than expected, “Nun II” could stretch closer to $35 million, which is what fellow “Conjuring” spinoff “Annabelle: Creation” earned in 2017 before inflation adjustment. Reception has been tepid among early moviegoers with a C on CinemaScore,...

“Give me a word, any word,” Michael Constantine’s Gus Portokalos implored to anyone who would listen in 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, “and I’ll show you how the root of that word is Greek.” The old man’s words recur early on in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, spoken not by the Portokalos patriarch (Constantine himself died in 2021), but by his grieving daughter, Toula (Nia Vardalos), reminding her own daughter, Paris (Elena Kampouris), of Gus’s grinning legacy and the gaping hole he’s left behind.
Toula is doing her father’s voice and smiling when she delivers that tribute, but there are tears in her eyes too. The laughs here, for both characters and audiences, tend to echo through the gauze of nostalgia, making the film an unexpectedly moving entry in the franchise, if not an uproariously funny one. This weekend sees the wide release of two movies aimed at vastly different audiences. In one corner, you have the possessed demons of The Nun II. On the other, you have the romantic adventures of My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. The big question is whether audiences are still interested in either of these franchises.
Released on September 7, 2018, The Nun continued The Conjuring Universe, giving a spin-off story to the possessed Nun from The Conjuring 2. The Nun would launch with an impressive $53.8 million on its way to a massive $365.5 million worldwide, the most of any film in The Conjuring Universe. So it was only a matter of time before we got a sequel, and that time has come with this weekend’s release of The Nun II. There are no reviews yet, although would reviews really matter? The first film garnered horrible reviews from both critics and audiences and still managed its stellar performance.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding" is one of the most incredible cinematic success stories of the last 25 years. Released in 2002, it was made for just $5 million and opened just ahead of the summer movie season in April, making less than $600,000 on just over 100 screens on its opening weekend. But then something amazing happened, as it became one of the strongest word-of-mouth hits in history, gaining moviegoers week, after week, after week. It eventually made an astonishing $368.7 million worldwide, making it one of the ten highest-grossing movies that year, ahead of both of Steven Spielberg's releases -- "Minority Report" and "Catch Me If You Can" -- as well as eventual Best Picture winner "Chicago."

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.

Opa, it's CinemaCon! That means we're finally getting an inside look at the highly anticipated threequel "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3" — and yes, it totally is highly anticipated. /Film's own Ben Pearson is attending the annual film convention in Las Vegas and has the first word on some of the most sought-after exclusive trailers and footage presentations, which includes our third visit to the world of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." CinemaCon debuted some new clips from the film, which is set to arrive later this year.
The original rom-com was a completely unexpected hit when it arrived in 2002 and remains the second highest grossing film that never hit the No. 1 box office spot during its theatrical run. Prior to this third installment, the 2016 sequel "My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2" saw writer and star Nia Vardalos and costar John Corbett's characters navigating their marriage and family life.

Break out the Windex!
Audiences at CinemaCon were treated to the first-ever trailer for “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” the latest chapter in the romantic comedy series about culture clashes, true love, bundt cakes and the many, many uses for Windex. The third entry picks up years after the original and follows the Portokalos family as they reunite a hop, skip and a jump away from their hometown of Chicago.
“A lot has happened since my big fat Greek wedding,” Nia Vardalos’ character says in a voice over. “My father passed away, and his last wish was for us to visit his childhood village in Greece and reconnect with our roots. So, we’re having a reunion.”
The trailer, which isn’t yet available to the public, begins as the Portokalos family packs their bags and travels overseas to find the friends and cousins (blood or otherwise) of Toula’s late father.

If one were to apply the "Predator" handshake meme to Nia Vardalos and James Cameron, their clasped hands should probably be labeled, "Making incredibly long-legged hits at the box office." Cameron, mind you, has done this a tad more often than Vardalos has at this stage in their respective careers, but the mere fact that I was even able to write that sentence with a straight face is a testament to just how massive a sleeper success "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" was upon its release in 2002. To this day, it remains the second-highest-grossing film to never hit the top spot at the U.S. box office during its theatrical run.

Rita Wilson knew she wanted to bring the two Latino characters, played by Manuel Garcia Rulfo and Mariana Trevino, from “A Man Called Otto” into her song “Till You’re Home.” She fell in love with the vocals of Sebastián Yatra, who sang the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s “Encanto” (2021). He had one day off and happened to be in Los Angeles, giving him one day to record the track. “We were incredibly lucky that he said yes,” says Wilson.
The actor, producer, singer and songwriter will enter the awards conversation for best original song for the upcoming Sony Pictures feature film, which stars her husband, Tom Hanks, and is directed by Marc Forster.

Michael Constantine, whose long career produced an Emmy award and many memorable turns as a character actor, died Aug. 31 at his home in Reading, Pa. He was 94 and died from natural causes, his agent, Julia Buchwald, confirmed.
Constantine was best known as the fruit and Windex-obsessed father Gus Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, an indie film that rose out of nowhere to become a smash hit. It spawned a sequel and a third version was in the planning stages, this time set in Greece.,
The original film from 2002 scored more than $360 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all-time.
But Constantine had a long career before that breakout hit. He was the school principal on the popular TV series Room 222. The role of Seymour Kaufman was a key to the show, which ran on ABC-tv from 1969 to 1974. He won an Emmy for the role in 1970.

Michael Constantine, who played Gus, the father of Nia Vardalos’ Toula Portokalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” by far the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, died on Aug. 31. He was 94.
Constantine’s agent confirmed the news of his death to Variety. He died of natural causes.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scored a domestic gross of $241 million in 2002; No. 2 on the list is “What Women Want” with $183 million. The film drew a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture.
As Roger Ebert recounted, Constantine’s Gus “specializes in finding the Greek root for any word (even ‘kimono’), and delivers a toast in which he explains that ‘Miller’ goes back to the Greek word for apple, and ‘Portokalos’ is based on the Greek word for oranges, and so, he concludes triumphantly, ‘In the end, we’re all fruits.’ ”

We understand this is a hot one for Amblin and they’re fast-tracking it. Movies targeted toward the 50 crowd are a box office goldmine with recent successes such as Paramount’s Book Club ($68.5M domestic), My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 ($59.6M), and, heck, Warner Bros.’ The Mule crossing $100M at the domestic B.O. last weekend.
Kochoff wrote the New Line Jane Fonda-Jennifer Lopez hit comedy Monster-in-Law which grossed over $154M Ww, and also co-penned Garry Marshall’s final movie Mother’s Day which starred Julia Roberts, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis.

'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' Star Nia Vardalos to Divorce Husband Ian Gomez After 23 Years of Marriage
It's over between Nia Vardalos and her husband, Ian Gomez, after nearly 25 years of marriage. The My Big Fat Greek Wedding star, 55, filed for divorce from her estranged spouse on Tuesday, July 3 and Ian, 52, filed his response to her filing in La on Thursday, July 5. According to People, Nia and Ian have listed "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their split. The couple previously tied the knot in September 1995 and are parents to an 11-year-old adopted daughter, Ilaria Gomez, whom they welcomed into their family in 2008. "We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time. Our relationship became a friendship so the decision to end the marriage is completely mutual and amicable," the duo said in a statement to People. "It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy." Nia and her ex-husband,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Tense but never sensationalized action adventure about the first post–9/11 Us foray into Afghanistan, an extraordinary culture clash and mashup of medieval and modern technologies. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

A month after 9/11, an elite team of soldiers, Us Army Green Berets, had already helicoptered into the remote mountains of northern Afghanistan on a top-secret mission: to support tribal warlord General Abdul Rashid Dostum, part of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, in an effort to retake the Taliban stronghold of Mazar-i-Sharif, an essential first step in defeating the Al-Qaeda–supporting regime. 12 Strong tells their now-declassified story, and it’s a case of “If it weren’t true, you’d hardly believe it,” with its...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Culturally clueless cinematic vomit, a cynical undertaking embracing the most diminishing clichés it can apply to its characters. Low stakes, and low humor. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Dwayne Johnson, occasion fan of Jack Black

More than 20 years after 1995’s Jumanji — the family adventure film about a couple of kids who get sucked into an ancient board game and have to play it to completion to escape — the sequel has arrived… and this time, it’s all about hapless teens who get sucked into a videogame and have to play it to completion to escape. Was anyone demanding a second go at Jumanji? Zathura, the 2005 “spiritual sequel” — which, to be fair, does sound more like marketing baloney than anything else — was a flop. And, to be “fair” to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,...

04.27.17: This list is now final. While I may in the future see additional films that were released in the awards year of 2016, no more films will be added to this list. (I may add links to reviews of films listed here.)
This ranking includes only new theatrical releases viewed for the awards year of 2016 (for eligibility for the Academy Awards and the Ofcs and Awfj awards); some films released in the UK without Us releases (and so ineligible for those awards this year) may also be included, for my own bookkeeping purposes. Links go to my review. Numbers after each entry are Date First Viewed/NYC Release Date/London Release Date; year is 2016 unless otherwise noted.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Unfocused like a 1970s cast-of-thousands disaster flick, and with little point beyond engaging in bland and easy propagandistic cheering. Boston deserves better. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg’s previous collaborations
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There are likely hundreds of amazing, moving stories to be told about the 2013 bombing at the finish line of Boston’s annual marathon… and dang if Patriots Day — named after the local holiday on which the bombing occurred — doesn’t seem to want to tell all of them all at once.
Patriots Day barely introduces us to one set of characters before jumping away to another.
Director and screenwriter (with Matt Cook and Joshua Zetumer) Peter Berg might have been more successful zooming in on star Mark Wahlberg’s composite cop character Tommy Saunders...
