New technologies led by artificial intelligence and virtual production are profoundly changing visual effects but are still “another paintbrush” in the service of storytelling, says VFX veteran George Murphy.
“Virtual production is not just a tool for VFX; it’s a storytelling tool that allows actors to feel fully immersed in the scene, instead of having to imagine everything against a blank screen,” Murphy tells The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview at the Tokyo International Film Festival ahead of appearing on the Motion Picture Association panel, Filmmaking 2.0: The Evolution of Real-Time VFX for Traditional Filmmakers.
Murphy, a VFX supervisor and creative director at Dneg 360 in London, made his entry into filmmaking with Steven Spielberg’s Hook (1991), a production hailed for its seminal VFX, in particular the use of projected matte painting. Wonder Dynamics, the artificial intelligence start-up co-founded by actor Tye Sheridan, has unveiled its latest AI-powered tool, which is capable of easily turning live-action footage into a 3D, animated scene.
On October 30, Wonder Dynamics launched the beta version of Wonder Animation, a new video-to-3D scene tech that lets artists shoot a scene with any camera, in any location, and turn the footage into an animated scene with CG characters in a 3D environment via AI reconstruction.
Wonder’s flagship, Wonder Studio, has already made waves in the industry for tech that allows users to easily create animated CG characters on top of live-action footage. But this tech goes a step further.
What’s noteworthy about the video-to-3D scene tech is its ability to film and edit sequences with multiple cuts and various shots, and then use AI to reconstruct the scene in a 3D space. Additionally, it matches...

We’ve written before about how Roblox has emerged as a prominent player in the metaverse, while other participants like Meta (renamed for the very thing…oops) have backed down from ambitions of owning a share of a vast virtual world where people live second lives–gathering, gaming, socializing, watching content, and shopping. Turns out there’s still another major player who has visions for that world: Epic Games.
The Fortnite owner has dabbled in metaverse-esque events before (remember the Travis Scott concert?), but now it’s rolled out Fab, a one-stop digital asset marketplace that’s designed to give developers the building blocks to homebrew metaverse experiences and video games alike.
Epic Games has owned multiple digital assets stores for years, including Unreal Engine Marketplace, Sketchfab Store, Quixel, and ArtStation Marketplace, but Fab is the first time it’s bringing them all together, connecting people who make digital assets with people who need htem.

On Sunday, Justine Moore, a partner at the Silicon Valley venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, tweeted about a curious discovery. It was an Instagram account with the handle @ethos_atx, which purported to represent an upscale restaurant called Ethos in Austin, Texas. But, as Moore noted, no such business exists — despite the account’s tens of thousands of followers and blue verification checkmark. And all the food on the page (along with pictures of “staff”) is AI-generated.

Following a nightmare development cycle and lengthy delays, Halo Infinite dropped in December 2021. Despite its great campaign, the game was infested with issues from the get-go and lacked content for a game that was centered around the live-service models. Gamers had lost hope in developer 343 Industries and Microsoft, believing that it was the end of the line for Master Chief’s adventures.

Alonso Aguilar, head of Mexico Originals at Amazon Studios and showrunner/director Jorge Michel Grau regaled participants of the Madrid confab Iberseries & Platino Industria with a first look at the trailer of Prime Video Latin America’s most expensive production to date, “Every Minute Counts” (“Cada Minuto Cuenta”).
The new original series, that turns on the devastating earthquake that hit Mexico City on Sept. 19, 1985 made use of the Unreal Engine virtual screen technology first used by Disney’s “The Mandalorian,” unprecedented for Mexico, or Latin America for that matter.

For ‘Megalopolis,’ Francis Ford Coppola Embraced Virtual Production — Including the LED Volume Stage
It’s fitting that the forward-thinking Francis Ford Coppola finally turned to virtual production on his $120 million futuristic passion project, “Megalopolis,” with its reliance on experimental theatricality and fantasy imagery. After all, the director has always been a proponent of tech advancement: “One From the Heart” (1982) introduced the Silverfish electronic hub for enabling simultaneous pre-production, production, and post-production activity. However, his preference for shooting live in-camera effects (“Bram Stoker’s Dracula”) necessitated an embrace of blue screen and LED volume stage work.
But Coppola was in a bind. After disbanding his VFX team (along with his art department) mid-way through production (creative differences became a budgetary necessity), he hired his nephew, Jesse James Chisholm, a Marvel vet, to take over as VFX supervisor (working at Coppola’s new All-Movie Hotel post facility outside of Atlanta).
Chisholm quickly got up to speed with his uncle to understand his creative vision and new streamlined approach.

Deadpool director Tim Miller suggests that CGI is on the cusp of crossing the uncanny valley – meaning digital characters may soon be indistinguishable from real ones.
Tim Miller has a new animated series coming to Amazon called Secret Level, which uses assets created in Unreal 5 Engine to digitally animate a different videogame world in each episode.
Much of the recent chatter about the series (since its splashy Gamescom announcement) has centred on the fact that one of the episodes focuses on Concord, Sony’s hyped online arena shooter that released on the 23rd August and performed so poorly that it was cancelled just two weeks later.
While the Deadpool director has expressed hope that Secret Level may in some way help to revive Concord’s fortunes, he’s also excited about lots of other elements of the upcoming series, including the use of Unreal Engine 5 to create the animation in the show.

“Fortnite” creator Epic Games kicked off its Unreal Fest event Tuesday with the debut of Unreal Engine 5.5 and previews for new features of the massively popular video-game-building tool. Used to produce not only Aaa game titles, but also big-budget VFX-heavy shows like “The Mandalorian” and Tim Miller’s upcoming Amazon animated video game-focused anthology TV series “Secret Level,” Unreal Engine is Epic’s pride and joy and the service is adding more features to make it an attractive production tool for Hollywood.

At a conference on film and artificial intelligence over the weekend in South Korea’s Bucheon, it was difficult to know whether the new technology was being embraced, normalized or underestimated.
Bucheon, a high-rise city on the outskirts of Seoul, has long harbored both high-tech and cultural industry aspirations. The city turned a WWII bunker into a digital art hub and boasts a comic book museum, a Webtoon convergence center and two film festivals as well as a Philharmonic Orchestra founded in the analog-era.
This year, its long-running Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BiFan) launched a competition for AI-produced short films, co-hosted a conference on the topic and operated a hands-on AI workshop. The embrace of AI felt like a brave response to every mature film festival’s fear of becoming stale.

Because of the 2023 WGA and SAG strikes, a lot of the initial conversations surrounding artificial intelligence in Hollywood has focused on whether A.I. will be used to produce film scripts or recreate performances. But the highly controversial technology is already being used behind the scenes on your favorite television shows, as a tool to help stimulate the creative process. On Saturday afternoon at the Atx TV Festival, a group of craft artists discussed the perils and premiums of AI on their industry, during a wide-ranging discussion on their respective programs.

Ninja Theory’s Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 has impressed fans with its stunning visuals and rapid development timeline. While its predecessor, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, took seven years to complete, Hellblade 2‘s development began in 2020 and was completed in just four years. This short timeline is particularly impressive given the game’s stunning graphics, which many attribute to the use of Unreal Engine 5.
