Gareth Neame, whose Carnival Films shepherded “Downton Abbey” to international success, “could not have anticipated” that the British period drama would not only become a worldwide hit, but launch a successful film franchise, with a third film due September 2025.
But Carnival’s success isn’t limited to the moonshot of “Downton”: The British powerhouse, which sold to NBCUniversal in 2008, just launched “The Day of the Jackal” with Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch for Sky/Peacock and has the upcoming dramas “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” starring Colin Firth, and the hotly anticipated “All Her Fault,” Sarah Snook’s first series since “Succession” wrapped.
Neame talked to TheWrap about how his series’ successes have changed the landscape for other U.K.-based productions and how Carnival still feels like a “boutique” studio despite being part of one of the biggest media corporations on the planet.

It was only when the team at Carnival Films decided they would fast forward The Day of the Jackal to the present day that things started getting interesting.
Carnival bosses Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant had toyed with the idea of remaking Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 historical novel about the fictional assassination of Charles de Gaulle for a few years but had always concluded that the 1973 movie version starring Edward Fox “cannot be bettered so why would you want to remake it,” according to Neame.
“We revere the film enormously but kept talking about [a remake],” he added. “It was such an intriguing, interesting idea and we couldn’t quite let it go.”
So in the midst of the pandemic, Neame and Marchant decided they would instil two obvious points of difference by making The Day of the Jackal into a 10-episode series and setting it in a 21st century milieu, with no...

Sky Studios CEO Cecile Frot-Coutaz has said there is “no scenario” in which its pay-tv customers will not have access to content from Warner Bros. Discovery streamer Max when it launches in the UK.
Sky has been the sole home of HBO content in the UK for many years, but it is widely expected Wbd will move the content to its own streamer when their current output deal ends in 2025. Wbd has not officially set a date for a UK launch, but senior exec J.B. Perrette said earlier this year it would “crazy” not to go direct-to-consumer in the UK.
With that backdrop, speculation has been rampant about what the future of the Sky-Wbd partnership will look like, with both sides making positive noises about an agreement without clearly outlining what shape it could take.

Colin Firth is in early talks to join Emily Blunt in Steven Spielberg’s next film.
It’s unclear who the Oscar-winning actor will play or what the movie is even about, though it has been described as an “event film,” and the fact that is has been slated to open in the summer of 2026 suggests it will be a return to the kind of blockbusters that made Spielberg a household name. Otherwise, mums the word on what on screen action awaits. Spielberg cooked up the story and David Koepp, who wrote “Jurassic Park” and the first “Mission: Impossible,” penned the script. Universal will release the film, which is produced by Spielberg’s company, Amblin.
Firth is set to appear in “Lockerbie,” a Peacock series about the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, as well as “Young Sherlock,” a Prime Video series about the famous detective’s early years from Guy Ritchie.
It’s unclear who the Oscar-winning actor will play or what the movie is even about, though it has been described as an “event film,” and the fact that is has been slated to open in the summer of 2026 suggests it will be a return to the kind of blockbusters that made Spielberg a household name. Set dressers organized the scene by setting props in a field for a TV drama about the aftermath of the bombing in Lockerbie starring Colin Firth in Bathgate, Scotland, last week.
The miniseries Lockerbie examines the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The bombing took 270 lives: 259 of them were on the flight and 11 lives were lost as the wreckage damaged their homes.
Props were set up to look like the aftermath of the bombing. The crew is carrying the parts of the plane parts including seats and parts of a wing.
In 2016, Firth sat down with uInterview to talk about relating to his character, Bill Haydon, in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
When asked about his connection to the character, Firth exclusively told uInterview that, “[Haydon] handles things with great authority and great aplomb, and I’m not saying I am capable of doing that, but I do find those things attractive.
