Cillian Murphy is a fan of the film's original novel writer Claire Keegan. He remembers reading her novel "Foster" on a train and having to pull his hoodie over his face because he was crying.
While Cillian Murphy was discussing working with Tim Mielants again, Murphy's wife suggested that the novel "Small Things Like These" be made into a film. He didn't expect it the rights to be available, but he called Claire Keegan's agent, who told him it was. After acquiring the rights with producing partner Alan Moloney, Murphy pitched the idea to Matt Damon, who has set up a studio with Ben Affleck, on that film's set. Damon liked the story, and the two set up to make the movie.
Opening film at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
Cillian Murphy mentioned in an interview that the idea to cast Emily Watson as Sister Mary came to him in a dream, describing her as one of his favourite performers.
Much of the outdoor filming was done in the town of New Ross, Co Wexford.
