Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Oddity’s portrayal of revenge was haunting. And Outside’s use of the zombie subgenre to talk about the patriarchy was worthy of all the applause in the world. Then you have movies like Night Swim, The Devil’s Bath, Consumed, Baghead, The Hangman, Munjya, MadS, Mr. Crocket, and Don’t Move, which undoubtedly have a good concept at their core, but the execution is simply too muddled to be impactful. I am sad to say that...

Plot: When Anne and Patrick hail a black cab after a night out their driver is chatty, jovial even, but they are in no mood to talk. In fact, the couple is barely on speaking terms. That is, until they realize the driver has no intention of taking them home. Locked in the cab with no means of escape, the driver transports the couple to a stretch of deserted and supposedly haunted road. But what is his purpose? Is he mad or just plain evil? And why has he selected Anne and Patrick as his victims?
Review: Most of us have had a less-than-enjoyable ride in a cab or an Uber. At least with rideshares, you can tell if the driver has been a creep or not, while a taxi is a complete crapshoot. Jumping into a cab, we generally trust that we are safe, but everyone knows someone who...

If the plot of Time Cut sounds a bit familiar, it should, Totally Killer covered much of the same ground not that long ago. But despite being released second, Time Cut was actually filmed a year before Totally Killer was announced. Maybe it should have used its time machine to get to our screens first.
The film begins in 2003 in Sweetly, Minnesota, where a killer known as The Sweetly Slasher has been targeting the local teens. Summer’s best friend Emmy was one of the victims, and she’s forced herself to come to the party honouring her and the other victims.
Unfortunately, the party gets some uninvited guests in the form of the police and The Sweetly Slasher himself. In the confusion, Summer ends up becoming a victim herself.

To be a fan of The Gentleman Bastards is to know a longing that few other fandoms outside of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire or Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle understand. Back in 2006, author Scott Lynch took the fantasy world by storm with the release of his novel The Lies of Locke Lamora, which was the first installment in a projected seven-book series called The Gentlemen Bastards Sequence. The following year, Lynch released Red Seas Under Red Skies, carrying on the tale of con man extraordinaire Locke Lamora as he headed to the marine city-state of Tal Verrar. The wait was quite a bit longer for the third book, The Republic of Thieves, which came out six years later in 2013.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points for “Agatha All Along,” currently streaming on Disney Plus.
If there is one thing known about Marvel is that no detail is perchance: scenery, wardrobe, little lines of dialogue here and there. All these small additions tend to be easter eggs that fans later meticulously rewind for and analyze trying to comprehend the foreshadowing they might entail. One of the most noticeable methods this is done through is outfit choices. And, the wardrobe in the new Marvel series “Agatha All Along” highlighted more than just figures.
Plenty of fun themes to play around with clothing wise, this freshman season of the “WandaVision” spinoff, took the coven — composed of Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), Lilia (Patti LuPone), Jennifer (Sasheer Zamata), Death (Aubrey Plaza), Alice (Alison Ahn) and Billy (Joe Locke) — through different challenges while they explored the Witches Road. Last year, it was reported that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight was tapped to pen the screenplay for the untitled Rey-centric Star Wars movie with Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy attached to direct. The new cinematic Star Wars installment is the same one that Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson originally penned before they departed. Knight is best known for creating Peaky Blinders, the period crime drama starring Cillian Murphy, but he is also known for his work on Eastern Promises, Dirty Pretty Things, Locke, Allied, Spencer, Taboo, See, Sas: Rogue Heroes, and more. It’s said that this new Star Wars movie will mark the franchise’s return to the big screen following the release of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

WandaVision series introduced two of the Scarlet Witch’s sons, Billy and Tommy. However, Jac Schaeffer’s series didn’t properly set them up to be their comic book counterparts, Wiccan and Speed. Marvel then went on to make a spin-off from the Elizabeth Olsen series, centered around the villain character played by Kathryn Hahn, Agatha Harkness.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been such a coveted hub of entertainment that it’s either the place where everyone is or everyone wants to be. The popularity of the franchise comes with its own perks, as you get access to unlimited resources, and people from every country that has an accessible film theater become familiar with your work. But it has its downsides because the franchise works like a conveyor belt and every project has a stupid deadline that stifles creativity. And since a lot of directors are in there, sometimes for very long periods of time, it’s interesting to see how the process of making a Marvel project has affected their vision and whether that change is palpable in their post-mcu career. Jon Favreau made the amazing Chef and then went right into the conveyor belt with Disney remakes and Star Wars’ Mandalorian IP. James Gunn made the fantastic The Suicide Squad.

Joe Locke is known best for his standout role in Heartstopper but Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along could be the project that shoots the 20-year-old into superstardom.
While he's been named "Teen" in official press materials for the Disney series, the prevailing theory is that he's actually playing Billy Kaplan, a.k.a. Billy Maximoff, a.k.a. the Young Avenger Wiccan!
Talking to Rolling Stone, Locke was asked what fans can expect from the WandaVision follow-up.
"It’s a dark comedy about witches. It’s not what you would usually expect from a Marvel series," he says, confirming that Teen helps free Agatha Harkness from the spell the Scarlet Witch cast on her when they last crossed paths. The unnamed character then persuades Agatha to take him on her journey down the Witches' Road.

23 years into his film career, Tom Hardy is still impossible to pin down. Is he a leading man? A full-on movie star? A character actor? Would he be perfectly happy to just make Venom movies until he retires?
Here's what we do know about Hardy: he's handsome, he loves trying on weird accents (which we ranked here at /Film), and he commits fully to every role whether it's a prestige picture or a superhero flick. Critics dig him (even if they do not dig the "Venom" movies at all), and he's tremendously respected by his fellow actors. He's one of the best we've got. But it's been 16 years since his breakthrough bravura performance in Nicolas Winding Refn's "Bronson," and, for whatever reason, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' membership has only managed to nominate him for one measly Oscar.
What gives?

Nothing fancy, no pyrotechnics or sudden plot twists—just a wizened old cabbie and his female, millennial-aged passenger making their way from J.F.K. to midtown Manhattan, slowly revealing themselves and challenging each other’s assumptions. To help pass the time during an ugly traffic jam, they engage in a friendly game of conversational one-upmanship, each sharing details about their own life and offering perceptive observations about the other’s. Lightly flirtatious small talk progresses toward the confessional, and gradually an intimacy forms that’s specific to people who know they won’t see each other again.
Such is the premise of writer-director Christy Hall’s debut feature, Daddio, a film as tedious and predictable as its traffic-clogged Long Island Expressway setting. Toronto has long been a popular destination for major productions thanks to its solid and skilled crew base, competitive tax credits, extensive studio space and growing tech sector. Projects such as Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Amazon’s hit show The Boys and Netflix comedy Ginny & Georgia are just some of the 24 productions that are shooting (or close to shooting) in Ontario’s capital city. And while its modern infrastructure and very stable and long-established system of local and federal incentives have always been a big draw to the region, this is, say locals, just one piece of the puzzle as the city looks to build on this growth.
“The economic argument is that the production services tax credit is here, and it’s been stable for a really long time,” says Marguerite Pigott, the Film Commissioner and Director of Entertainment Industries for the City of Toronto. “This, plus...

Fresh off her turn in Marvel‘s maligned “Madame Web,” Dakota Johnson is returning to indies with Christy Hall’s feature directorial debut “Daddio.” Sean Penn co-stars as a lone-wolf taxi driver and old-guard New Yorker who picks up Johnson’s character, Girlie, from JFK. On the journey back to Brooklyn, they share a heart-to-heart about life, love, sex, relationships, and more.
For Johnson, working with Hall was no different from working with more established filmmakers. “Well, it’s different every time. It depends on the person,” Johnson told IndieWire. “Sometimes you would never guess that it was somebody’s first feature, and sometimes it can be really challenging.” Production took place in just 16 days and primarily on a soundstage. Not only does Johnson star, but she also serves as a producer, alongside her TeaTime Pictures co-founder Ro Donnelly.
“This is, it’s just such a gem of a project.

Tom Hardy is most popularly known for committing to intense characters that are morally complex. The actor goes method in everything he does and dives deep into the skin of the character to embody them. In 2018, when Steven Zaillian began writing a first draft of Ripley — his TV adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley — one item in his office made its way into his screenplay: the heavy crystal ashtray that (spoiler alert) kills Freddie Miles in the fifth episode.
But Zaillian’s foray into the story of con man Tom Ripley started long before 2018. Joe Locke is teasing Heartstopper Season 3 and says it will tackle darker issues.
Locke attended Disney’s upfront presentation to advertisers on Thursday and teased what viewers can expect when the third season of the Netflix series premieres on October 3.
“It’s definitely a more grown-up season,” Locke told Deadline. “We deal with more darker issues, Charlies mental health is a big focus. And it’s still Heartstopper, so there’s always the light at the end of the tunnel, which is a really great way of dealing with issues like that.”

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been generating positive buzz on social media ahead of its release in theaters this weekend and all signs point to it being a worthy successor to Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves' Andy Serkis-led trilogy.
The Maze Runner helmer Wes Ball has previously teased plans for a new series of movies. Now, with the franchise jumping hundreds of years into the future, there are endless possibilities for where Apes could go after Kingdom.
Talking to ComicBook.com (via SFFGazette.com), the filmmaker shared an update on where things stand with his sequel and threequel plans.
"It'll take as long as it takes," Ball admitted. "Fortunately because this franchise is important to the studio we'll get it right like we did this one, took our time and got it right. Hopefully, people think that...It takes time, the development itself and my big thing...

It’s rare to find a star whose taste you can trust beyond their performance; the kind of actor who’s proven to be as discerning in their projects’ quality as they are in choosing rewarding individual roles. There simply aren’t that many Julia Louis-Dreyfuses or Carrie Coons out there, with either impeccable résumés or a Hall of Fame-worthy batting average. But Elisabeth Moss is among them.
As a TV lead, she’s steered some of the modern era’s greatest programs: seven masterful seasons of “Mad Men,” two staggering seasons of “Top of the Lake,” one stirring season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” (and a few more she carried on her back). Even her single misfire is minor: The 2022 Apple TV series “Shining Girls” is more intriguing and better than its (lack of) recognition. Plus, it arrived amid a smattering of strong film work that befit her premium brand.

One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost. In the shadows, mission controllers at the CIA and French Dgse must put differences aside and work together to avert potential disaster.
Review: Since her breakout role in Mad Men as Peggy Olsen, Elisabeth Moss has turned in stellar performance after performance. The Veil is another example of why we are in the golden age of brilliant female characters on screen. These strong, smart, and cunning female characters own the screen and set them ablaze. It just so happens that many can be found on FX. A network that celebrates edgy and innovative storytelling, with great female roles at the series center.
Often, these roles subvert female stereotypes. You have Anna Sawai’s brilliant performance in Shōgun, one of the greatest roles in television history, who gives a thoughtful, sumptuous, and cunning performance. Then, last year, in A Murder at the End of the World, Emma Corrin brought to life one of the most complex characters on television in recent memory.

Daisy Ridley has a lot going on these days, but she made a point to carve out some time to support The Marsh King’s Daughter, a film that was a promotional casualty of the now-resolved SAG-AFTRA strike. The English actor has plenty of reasons to be proud of her work in Neil Burger’s thriller, as she’s tasked with playing the psychologically complex and physical role of Helena. As a child, the character lived off the grid with her mother (Caren Pistorius) and father (Ben Mendelsohn) until she was abruptly and dramatically whisked away to lead a more civilized life.
Ridley shares the role with Brooklynn Prince, who plays young Helena in flashbacks. The two actors happened to have a viral moment in 2017, as Prince met Ridley backstage at Good Morning America. Ridley then surprised Prince once more during a The Florida Project Q&a with THR’s Scott Feinberg.

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

The two stars do their best with a psychologically limited two-hander that takes place in a taxi from JFK airport to Manhattan
One would be forgiven for thinking that the one-location two-hander Daddio was born from the many restrictions introduced by the advent of Covid, a safe and easy way to make something, anything in the pandemic’s darkest days. It might have made it all a little easier to like, or at least admire, if that were the case but the film, set in a cab ride from JFK airport to Manhattan, has been in the offing for far longer. Originally conceived as a stage play, it transformed into a Black List script in 2017 attracting the attention of Daisy Ridley before morphing once again into a low-key, low-interest fall festival premiere, shot at the end of last year, ushered to the screen by its star and producer, Dakota Johnson.

"Tell me what you want!" "Don't ever stop driving." An official trailer is out for an indie crime thriller from Australia titled Mercy Road, the latest film made by director John Curran. Not to be confused with Jim Cummings' Thunder Road. This recently premiered at the Melbourne Film Festival and already opened in Australia this month, with a US release coming up soon. In Curran's thriller Mercy Road – an unrelentingly tense psychological thriller – Luke Bracey plays a flawed everyday man who commits an impulsive and vicious crime. In this ultimate journey to redemption, he soon learns just how far he is willing to go to save his child. The cast includes Huw Higginson, Susie Porter, Alex Malone, Martha Kate Morgan, and Toby Jones. Early reviews are positive, saying "Bracey plays a dad on a mission to save his daughter in this strangely surreal film set mostly in a truck.

No wonder the writers are on strike.
Being forced to try to bring freshness to the same tired ideas over and over to get some studio work must be frustrating. I would be picketing Lionsgate (which is behind this movie) just because it’s really not easy making this kind of thing original. The latest ripoff — and it literally is because it comes from the 2015 Spanish film El Desconocido, which itself has been remade more than once in the past few years — is the Liam Neeson-starring Retribution. A better title might be Generic Neeson #9. I even looked up the title on IMDb just to make sure this was a new Neeson movie.
This is not to say that Regurgitation, er, I mean Retribution isn’t effectively made. Its director, the talented Nimród Antal (Control), does what he can to make Christopher Salmanpour’s (basically a TV procedural writer) by-the-numbers...

Pop quiz, hot shot! There's a bomb in Liam Neeson's car! What do you do?!
What if someone remade "Speed" and removed all the stuff that made that movie so exciting? The result might be "Retribution," Nimród Antal's monotonous thriller that finds Liam Neeson doing his usual Liam Neeson thing yet again. Neeson, who went from professorial roles to an unlikely action star, can play this sort of part in his sleep at this point, and he certainly seems sleepy here, growling unconvincing dialogue as he speeds around in a car wired to explode. Yes, just like "Speed," a mad bomber has planted a device in a vehicle, and if a certain set of rules aren't followed, that bomb will explode.
Neeson is Matt Turner, a financier living in Germany with his frustrated wife (Embeth Davidtz), his angry teen son (Jack Champion), and his loud daughter (Lilly Aspell). We...

In “Retribution,” which could be the title of almost any Liam Neeson film of the past 15 years, the 71-year-old star is still a lean, looming oak tree of a man, but for maybe the first time he’s up against a force that outpowers his sullen machismo. It’s called trying to be a daddy in the 21st century.
Neeson’s Matt Turner is a high-powered banker/financier who lives with his wife and two kids in a palatial modernist glass house in Berlin. Neeson has often played devoted fathers — that was the whole premise of “Taken,” which kicked off the Neeson-as-seething-roughneck-of-vengeance genre back in 2008.
But in “Retribution,” Matt gets no respect from his tween daughter, Emily (Lilly Aspell), or his arrogant teenage son, Zach (Jack Champion). The reason, as the movie presents it, is that the culture around him has leeched his authority away. He can’t “lay down...

Inside, directed by Vasilis Katsoupis, features an intriguing performance by Willem Dafoe. Dafoe, one of my favorite actors, is always brilliant even if the film falters, and that’s exactly the case here. Inside has no real plot, and even though I will watch Dafoe doing even the most mundane things, the film pushes the limit. Films like Locke, Buried, and Trapped are some notable examples that have only one actor predominantly driving the show in one location, but Inside feels just a bit too dry to be called engaging. The intent of the film is to get you into the mind of the character played by Willem Dafoe, and it hopes that some deep meaning will emerge through the metaphor of art that humans leave behind after they themselves leave the world. Whether or not it does is purely subjective, but the film left me wanting.
The story is quite simple.

The honest answer for why Hello Sunshine had such a prolific TV season is the pandemic.

Numbers have begun pouring in for this first weekend of June and it appears we have another Super Mario Bros. Movie situation brewing. If you recall all the way back in April, Super Mario Bros was tracking to do roughly $87 million for the weekend, yet by Sunday that number had ballooned to a record breaking $146.3 million (while also securing the worldwide record for an animated opening.) I don’t think we are going to see an explosion like that with Spider-Man but original tracking had Across The Spider-Verse at around $80 million, in our predictions from Thursday we saw the writing on the wall and put our guesstimate at around the $110 million mark. The film managed an impressive $17.35 million in Thursday previews, making it the second best preview numbers ever for an animated title just behind The Incredible’s 2’s take of $18.5 million. That film would ultimately open at $182.6 million, but...

The decision to re-title “The Interpreter” to “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” is an odd one, at least on the surface. For 25 years, the filmmaker’s forte has been whiz-bang action-crime movies like “Snatch,” “RocknRolla,” and the recently released “Operation Fortune,” in which his (usually English) characters rattle off banter like actors in an improv warm-up game.
“The Covenant,” on the other hand, is arguably the director’s first foray into purely dramatic territory, the kind that has thus far occupied the margins of his work. It’s an Afghanistan war film about duty and guilt, focused on a U.S. soldier’s debt to his Afghan interpreter. The premise is hardly “Ritchie-esque” upon first glance, with a straightforward intensity that conceals no surprise tonal oscillations. However, it remains firmly within Ritchie’s stylistic wheelhouse — his command of the swiftly moving camera, and its focus on violent masculine subjects,...

A remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo may be on the way at Paramount Pictures, with Robert Downey Jr. at its center and Steven Knight writing its script.
Vertigo was originally produced by Paramount back in 1958, and according to Deadline, Hitchcock’s estate favored the studio for handling the new production. The original film starred James Stewart as John “Scottie” Ferguson, a former police detective who has developed a fear of heights and vertigo. After leaving the force, Ferguson is hired by an acquaintance to follow his wife and investigate her strange behavior. It was the first movie to use the dolly zoom, an effect that distorts perspective, mimicking Ferguson’s disorientation.
In the upcoming iteration, Downey will take on Stewart’s starring role, as well as produce alongside his wife, Susan Downey, and John Davis and John Fox. It’s not the only period remake Downey’s been involved...
