Recent news that Google has decided to shut down its internal game development studios comes on the heels of a report by Bloomberg that suggests Amazon’s own game division is burdened by issues that it could prove to be insurmountable.
On the one hand, you want to be surprised by these revelations. There’s certainly a degree of surprise that comes naturally when you hear that two of the largest companies in the world have seemingly botched their entries into the video game industry so soon after they started. There was this idea that both companies would stay in the game long enough to just figure it out eventually.
On the other hand, these stories are, in the minds of many, more upsetting for the employees impacted by them than they are surprising in the least. Maybe that’s because of all these signs that pointed to the simple...

There’s a nice moment about halfway through “Monster Hunter,” when Captain Artemis, a U.S. Army ranger played by Milla Jovovich, and Hunter, a warrior of uncertain provenance played by Tony Jaa, are preparing to head into battle against, well, a monster.
Captain Artemis looks at Hunter with a steely gaze, because that’s clearly her forte, and says something she’s no doubt said plenty of times before in plenty of other dicey situations: “Let’s do this.”
Whereupon Hunter, who doesn’t speak English because he’s not from our world, gives her a blank look. “Huh?” he says.
Artemis stops, realizes her schtick isn’t playing to this audience, and shrugs. “Never mind,” she says.
It’s an amusing exchange, one of only a few in Paul W.S. Anderson’s extravagant foolishness based on the Capcom video game of the same name. But “Let’s do this,...

A certain odd feeling probably crossed your mind as you’re dashing past a building. You might still experience this occasionally. That is if the building sports a glass front entrance or window. Catching your reflection, you might first think,” Ugh, bad hair day” or “ I’d better just have a salad for lunch.”. But if you’re not in a mad hurry you may wonder if you’ve got an exact twin somewhere. Or taking it further, what if there’s another “me” in an almost identical “now”. And is this reflection a window into that duplicate world? That’s an idea that’s been explored in many fantasy anthology TV shows, though an even more famous use of that idea was on the original “Star Trek” TV show, you know the one with an evil Spock sporting a sinister goatee. Now that notion is taken up a few...

Back in August, Amazon Games invited Den of Geek to play its forthcoming game New World, an Mmo set in a fantastical version of Earth inspired by the Age of Exploration, where magic and gunpowder coexist and adventurers duke it out on the mysterious island of Aeternum to take control of different territories in 50v50 battles. I participated in one of these battles in my first preview and was generally impressed with the tighter-than-average Mmo combat and gigantic sense of scale.
Earlier this week, I got another chance to go hands-on with an alpha version of the game, and this time I explored a new region called Reekwater, a swampy, bayou-inspired zone that introduces new creatures and a robust fishing mechanic.

A new Park hoon-jung feature release is always a highly anticipated event and it becomes doubly exciting when his newest work “Night In Paradise” just happens to be a return to the gangster genre for him. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival and now we get a first trailer to see if the director of “New World” can replicate the success he had with his directorial debut yet again in the same genre.
Not much is known about the synopsise except that the story sees a gangster played by Um Tae-goo (“My Punch-Drunk Boxer“) go to Jeju Island to hide, where he meets Jeon Yeo-bin’s (“After My Death“) Jae-yeon, while several other gangsters, including the mob boss portrayed by Cha Seung-won (“Believer“). While no exact date is finalised, a 2020 release is confirmed, with a wide international release expected.

Amazon is making a big push in the Aaa gaming space. Not only has the commerce giant already published its first competitive shooter, Crucible, but it’s also set to release New World, the company’s first Mmo. With both games, Amazon Games is diving into two very crowded markets, hoping to make a splash. So what sets New World apart?
The game is set in “the haunted wilderness of Aeternum, a mysterious island during the twilight of the Age of Exploration. Success in New World ultimately depends on a player’s ability to conquer not only rival players, but Aeternum itself as it unleashes undead legions, hell-bent on purging them from its shores.”
It seems that New World‘s Age of Exploration takes inspiration from real history, which could prove a bit controversial since this era is usually most associated with figures like Christopher Columbus as well as Hernan Cortes,...

Major local film titles are beginning to appear on the Korean releasing schedule as Covid-19 retreats and the peak summer season approaches.
Since Korean cinemas began reopening earlier this month, cinemas schedules have relied heavily on re-runs, mixed with a handful of foreign, smaller new releases. That is about to change.
Since the coronavirus ran rampant from February, local distribution giants Cj Entertainment, Lotte and Showbox canceled or postponed dozens of theatrical outings. “Time to Hunt” was rescheduled multiple times and then switched to a straight to streaming release via Netflix. The pattern was repeated in May.
What has changed is the retreat of the virus threat, effective social distancing measure sin cinemas and the arrival of the summer season, which is traditionally a peak period, especially for genre and horror. That’s because school is out and audiences retreat into theaters to escape the heat.

A staple of any Marvel movie, including those outside of the McU, was always the Stan Lee cameo. I mean, who could blame the man largely responsible for creating the modern-day Gods for wanting to be a part of the films in some way?
Of course, Lee passed away in 2018, but he still managed to make more than 60 cameos in various movies and TV shows over the years. Perhaps the most memorable of them all though was his appearance in Deadpool. In the film, he plays a DJ in a strip club introducing “Chastity to the stage.” But according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, Lee didn’t do the scene on set. Instead, he was by himself in front of a green screen and was placed in the strip club afterwards.
“And here we go to the biggest cameo of all time,” Liefeld said during a commentary track he did with ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis.

Habits die hard. It’s Sunday, which is usually the time to list and analyze the weekend’s grosses. However, since almost all theaters are closed, I decided to take a look back to this weekend in 1982 — the year when box-office statistics became part of entertainment reporting.
Almost 40 years ago, coverage wasn’t instantaneous. People had to wait until midweek for reports, which inched closer to real time as the years went on. Here, we have the benefit of hindsight — and the title’s performance might offer us some perspective on how these films informed what Hollywood, and box office, would become.

Star Wars Resistance Season 2 Episode 18
And so it goes. Star Wars Resistance ends, not with a bang, but with a series of bangs, a sort of “back to basics” sentiment that does a yeoman’s job of straight-forward, good ol’ fashion Star Wars action. “The Escape” resembles A New Hope more than anything else, with it’s all out breakout from the Star Destroyer, all phasers blasting and ships exploding. It’s not at all deep or clever, it’s not really rewarding in terms of character revelations or developments, and it’s not particularly the best visually or strongest directed episode of the series. But it gets the job done: there’s an immediate conflict, our...

The gangster noir genre has give Korean cinema many great films. Hoping to join the ranks of such classics as “A Bittersweet Life“, “New World” and “A Dirty Carnival“, among others, is director Song Chang-yong’s latest film “Unalterable”.
Synopsis
Kwon Sang-gon is a gangster who wants to have a cool life. He becomes a gang boss and expects to reap the rewards of the top position. Kwon Sang-Gon soon realizes his life is a living hell, filled with conspiracies and betrayals.
While the director, who has so far made three film that’ve sunk into oblivion without making a dent, and the star-cast, led by Chun Jung-myung (“Hansel and Gretel“) and other actors that have very few films to their name, don’t necessarily build confidence on the film’s quality, the trailer does boast of a stylish looking noir gangster film which should be on the radar of genre fans.

Have we left the park? Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan wouldn’t answer that today at the HBO series’ Comic-Con panel. The theme is “New World” and from the new trailer, it looks like the robots have taken over, and are living among us — but in 2050.
As far as not leaving the park, we see Thandie Newton’s Maeve living in a fantasy WWII Nazi-filled world — another Delos park? Yes, it has to be.
One of the inspirations here? Blade Runner which Nolan said brother Chris made him watch plenty as a kid. But he, Jonathan Nolan, wanted to do it different.
Nolan said that they went out in the world to find some beautiful places to shoot to capture the show’s future.
“Dystopia can look pretty beautiful in the world. Just because the world is corrupt inside, doesn’t mean it can’t be smothered over and pretty.

Those producers have joined forces with producer-rightsholders Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Gardner, who have controlled those TV rights since New World was sold in 1989.
The intention is to use the mythology established in the movie franchise and the Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart as a launch pad for a new series that could be anthology, or a more traditional narrative. The producers are underway with a search for a writer-showrunner, before setting it at a network or streamer, at a time when horror is performing strongly.

In a strange way, watching a mediocre Korean thriller is almost as exhilarating as watching any of the legitimately great ones the country’s film industry continues to churn out — it’s wild to see how standards have gotten high enough that even a rambunctious serial killer saga with an ingenious premise and a swaggering Ma Dong-seok performance can still feel like something of a disappointment.
Such is the case with Lee Won-tae’s “The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil,” a giddy little bruiser that might feel like more of a refreshing kick to the chest if not for how much tamer it is than “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” or how poor the plotting is when compared to a recent crime saga like 2013’s riveting “New World” (to name just two of the many superior movies that also happen to boast Ma’s barrel-chested charm). So while it...

With the release of Arrow Video’s The Annihilators, read film historian and author Chris Poggiali’s introduction into New World Pictures – Roger Corman’s now legendary cult movie production company that brought it to life….
When Roger Corman cut the ribbon on New World Pictures in May of 1970, he was in the right place at the right time with the right idea in mind for his latest business venture: a production and distribution company that would provide a training ground for young filmmakers eager to get into the business. Less than a year after the release of Easy Rider, every studio in town was trying to duplicate its success by seeking out independent filmmakers with an eye on the youth market and all things counterculture. This was the height of the New Hollywood era, which Corman himself had helped usher in with his trailblazing 1966 smash The Wild Angels. Mostly known as a producer-director,...

For his directorial debut, filmmaker Michael Lehmann took on the world of high school comedies with Heathers, the endlessly quotable pitch-black comedy that fearlessly explores the trials and tribulations of the teenage experience. Written by Daniel Waters, Lehmann immediately fell in love with the script from his fellow up-and-comer in Hollywood, and set the wheels in motion to get Heathers into production.
“Dan Waters, who wrote the script, is an amazing screenwriter, and was an acquaintance of mine at the time, and a really good friend of Larry Karaszewski, who was in film school with me at USC. At some point right after I got out of film school, Larry said, ‘You should look at Dan Waters' script. It's really amazing, and he's looking for an agent, and maybe you could help him get one, because I landed an agent coming out of USC with a movie called The Beaver...

Director Michael Lehmann was shocked when he looked at the New York Times and Los Angeles Times entertainment sections and saw there were no ads for the second week of dark high school comedy “Heathers.”
When the film opened on March 31, 1989, the indie film studio New World had taken out ads for the comedy that featured Winona Ryder and Christian Slater in career-defining performances.
“It had played at Sundance and had gotten a lot of attention,” he noted. “We were really looking forward to see what would happen when it hit theaters. The first weekend was great — a good screen average for a little indie movie like that. We were super happy.”
But without more ads they knew their little film would be in trouble.

Korean distributors are having to fight ever harder for their share of Korea’s theatrical market share. Threats on the horizon include a slide in the performance of local movies, consolidation, the arrival of new players and the challenge from streaming services.
South Korea’s theatrical box office is now bigger than that of France or Germany despite a smaller population. But it has largely stopped growing and may be at a turning point. Admissions have plateaued since 2013, and gross revenues have increased largely due to ticket price increases.
The country’s powerhouse exhibition companies Cj-cgv and Lotte have responded by expanding abroad. But for distributors, it means a fight on many fronts.
The clearest evidence that the old order was under threat came last year when Lotte Cultureworks (formerly Lotte Entertainment), dethroned Cj Entertainment as the country’s top distributor for the first time in 15 years. Success came from...

A third Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. as the great detective and Jude Law as his loyal companion Dr. Watson has been in the works for years, but at last, the original dynamic duo are about to team up again. With the film now taking shape, some new intel tells us just where the pic’s going to take place and apparently, Sherlock Holmes 3 will see Holmes and Watson journey to the Old West.
Hn Entertainment writes that they’ve been informed by a source that Guy Ritchie’s threequel will see the Victorian heroes travel to San Francisco during the Wild West era. Though the 2009 film was located in Holmes’ traditional home of London, the 2012 sequel Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows took the detective on an action-packed tour of Europe as he hunted down his nemesis, Professor Moriarty. As much as I dig his takes and tales of Poe from the ‘60s, my favorite era of Roger Corman is the New World years: you know, pulpy pictures like Death Race 2000 (1975) and Humanoids from the Deep (1980). At the turn of the ‘80s he decided to cash in on the Star Wars and Alien craze with Battle Beyond the Stars (’80) and Galaxy of Terror (’81). His follow up to that last one, Forbidden World (1982), carries on the low-minded tradition of boobs and bloodshed in glorious, goofy fashion.
Made for around a million dollars and released in early May, Forbidden World (Aka Mutant), received mostly poor notices as it made the rounds of the drive-in circuit, but became a staple on home video for those looking for cheap thrills as only Corman could provide; which is to say, with confidence, competence, and a twisted sensibility.

Madrid, Spain — On Jan. 28 this year, the cast and crew of the Movistar Plus’s 16th century adventure drama “The Plague” wrapped shooting on Season 2. Variety visited the set and interview members of the team responsible for what could well be the country’s most ambitious TV project ever.
Here are five take-aways from the visit.
New Ambition
The six-hour Season 1 of the “The Plague” used 130 filming locations, a technical crew of 200, 2,000 extras over 250 sequences and multiple Vhf effects to recreate 16th century Seville. Its budget of €1.5 million ($1.7 million) per episode, in a country with typically-modest TV production costs of around €500,000-€600,000, ranked alongside high-end Canal Plus series in France such as the Luc Besson-produced “Séction Zero.”
“’The Plague’ was originally very ambitious, but also very risky,” Movistar Plus director of original fiction Domingo Corral told Variety. “We produced it when we were just getting into series. We didn...

During the first few songs of Friday’s Clutch show at New York’s Irving Plaza, I glanced up at the balcony and spotted an unexpected sight. A kid of no more than 12, accompanied by an older chaperone, was singing along to every word of “Gimme the Keys,” the first track off the veteran hard-rockers’ new 12th LP, Book of Bad Decisions. Checking in periodically, I saw that he was doing the same throughout the set, whether the band was playing a Nineties classic like “Escape From the Prison Planet,...

As movie censorship relaxed in the early 1970s, Mel Welles’ horror film “Lady Frankenstein” added sex and nudity to the familiar Frankenstein formula of the single-minded and arguably demented scientist who creates a monster and lives to regret it. In the 1971 production, now available in a handsome, fully loaded Blu-ray edition from Nucleus Films encoded for Region B, Dr. Tanya Frankenstein (Rosalba Neri) returns home to the family estate after completing medical school. Having inherited the family obsession, she is determined to help her father (Joseph Cotten) realize his long-frustrated ambition of creating human life in his laboratory. When Baron Frankenstein and his associate Dr. Marshall (Paul Muller) balk at including the refined young woman in their gory experiments, she fiercely overrides their objections: “Stop treating me like a child! As Vanity Fair’s cover profile, Michael B. Jordan provoked a storm of criticism with one line: “We don’t have any mythology, black mythology, or folklore. …Creating our own mythology is very important because … You help people dream.” Jordan likely knows that black folkore has a very long, rich history. It’s quite possible he had a more specific point in mind — frustrations over the lack of film and TV content that exploits black folklore — but the interviewer doesn’t make it explicitly clear with a follow-up question, leaving many to assume that the “Creed II” star meant exactly what he said.
The actor has yet to make a public statement responding to the criticism, and he declined to comment for this story. However, rather than pillory Jordan over what he may or may not have meant, here’s a brief overview of black folklore to serve as introduction for the uninitiated.

“For the past decade, Next Entertainment World has continuously challenged itself whenever there was an opportunity,” said Kim Woo-taek, chairman of Next Entertainment World.
Indeed, New, celebrating its 10th anniversary at Busan, has come a long way in a short time, developing itself from a second mover in the industry into a total entertainment company, overcoming hurdles and implementing innovative decisions. Take, for example, the company’s beginnings. When Kim launched New in 2008 with only four employees, the Korean film industry had been dominated by long-established, vertically integrated big companies. Cj Entertainment had been the top Korean distributor since 2003, with Showbox the a runner-up. The Korean arms of Hollywood majors had boasted strong lineups. A fledging in such a saturated industry, New started its domestic distribution business with foreign titles including Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight.” In its second year, when it launched investment-distribution operations of Korean titles, it became one of the top five distributors.

This newly shared footage of Amazon's New World is kind of a mixed bag.
Footage of New World, Amazon's mysterious upcoming Mmo project, has been leaked online via...PornHub?
While the footage first appeared on one of the world's most popular porn sites, it was eventually transferred over to the much more Sfw video host, YouTube. Fascinating choice of upload site aside, the footage in question is also generating some buzz for a variety of reasons.
While New World is billed as an Mmo, it actually looks closer to a modern survival game in many respects. Combat looks like it plays out mostly in real-time (much of the combat we see in the footage features heavy use of a bow-and-arrow) which is probably a pretty smart move considering that a more methodical, cooldown-based approach to combat might not have quite the same appeal as a large-scale,...

Criterion technical director Lee Kline is used to working with filmmakers to polish alternate versions of their movies. Previously, one of his biggest projects was the Criterion release of Terrence Malick’s “The New World,” a 172-minute director’s cut that Malick always preferred to the 135-minute version New Line Cinema released in 2005.
However, what Malick had in mind for “The Tree of Life” was something unlike anything Criterion had done before. According to Kline, the extended, 188-minute version of “The Tree of Life” that will premiere at the Venice Film Festival next week isn’t just 49 minutes longer; Malick created something new.
“Unlike with ‘New World,’ [the version of ‘The Tree of Life’] that premiered in 2011 at Cannes [was] definitely the definitive version of the film he wanted to make,” said Kline. “What’s interesting talking to Terry about this [new version of ‘Tree of Life’], I think he still doesn’t want people to think this is a better version.

Evidently, there are many crime thrillers coming out of S. Korea, too many someone could even say. Occasionally though, there are some productions that still manage to stand out, and prove that the genre has still something to give. And who else to come up with such a film than Park Hoon-jung, whose credits include “I Saw the Devil” (scriptwriter) and “New World”, two films that are among the top entries in the category. “V.I.P.” continues in the same footsteps.

The film confusingly begins right in the middle of a bloody massacre in a Facility.
