Science fiction’s broad umbrella covers everything from the future to outer space to alternate realities via technology. The unexplored terrain and concepts within sci-fi provide fertile ground for horror; what’s scarier than the unknown? Even worse, what happens when sci-fi horror invades the holidays? Sometimes, it means one bleak holiday. For other movies, it yields zany results.

A new take on the four elements — earth, wind, water and fire — lands in theaters June 16 with Pixar’s latest film “Elemental.” The four kinds of beings who live in Element City, resembling earthly plants, gusty clouds, rippling water and sparking flames.

Ember Lumen (Leah Lewis) anxiously awaits the day that she can take over her father’s shop, The Fireplace, so that he can finally retire and rest after a lot of hard work and sacrifice moving her and her mother away from Fireland to Element City for a better life. Enter Wade, a water being and pipe inspector, who challenges Ember’s path that has been blazed for her from a young age. Though elements are not supposed to mix, the fiery Ember and go-with-the-flow Wade cannot help but gravitate toward each other. Their various adventures help them get to know one another and develop their forbidden love.

Plot: In a world where the elements, fire, earth, air, and water live together, a young fire element, Ember (Leah Lewis), crosses paths with a clumsy water element, Wade (Mamoudou Athie) and the two, to their surprise, find that sometimes opposite elements attract.

Review: Pixar’s recent run of movies has been largely met with a shrug from fans. The road back to the big screen after the pandemic has been rocky for the studio’s films. Turning Red was pretty good, but it only got a little attention due to becoming a Disney Plus exclusive, and their previous film, Luca, might be the most obscure film the studio’s ever produced. Lightyear was supposed to be the company’s triumphant return to the big screen, but it felt like just another sci-fi/adventure movie.

Bringing up Baby,...

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.

First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.

Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

HBO Max’s...

There are so many different streaming services in play that it’s impossible to keep track of them all, but we find it’s good to at least be aware of what’s *leaving* the ones you’re subscribing to. This way you can make sure to knock things off your list before they’re gone.

On that note, a couple hundred movies will be leaving HBO Max in April 2023, including several that horror fans may want to watch before they can no longer be found on there.

It starts like any other yule log channel, with a warm fire filling the frame. A landlady interrupts the yuletide joy, her legs and vacuum shuffling past now and then. The doorbell rings; an elder woman with a Southern accent is there with her large adult son (dubbed "Pleatherface" at one point), claiming their car broke down, then forcing their way in. Later an unwitting couple returns to the home, unaware of the grisly death that went down moments before their arrival. All the good girls and boys watching become captive witness to hillbilly murder, haunted logs, a cult, aliens, and a night of laughs at a cozy cabin in the woods.

This is it. The holidays are upon us. It’s the last call for holiday preparations and cramming in every last bit of holiday horror our eyeballs can handle. Luckily, there’s no shortage of holiday horror out there. This week’s picks bring double the selection, all dedicated to delivering yuletide nightmares. These ten titles dig a little deeper than the classic titles like Black Christmas, Gremlins, and the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise to introduce potential new favorites.
