This was Alejandro Jorodowsky's first movie in 23 years.
The film's cast and crew feature a number of Alejandro Jodorowsky's family members. His son, Brontis Jodorowsky plays Jaime. Adan Jodorowsky plays the Anarchist, and composed the music for the film. Axel Jodorowsky plays Theosophist. Pascale Montandon-Jodorowsky, Alejandro's wife, designed the costumes for the film. Alejandro Jodorowsky directed, wrote, produced and portrayed himself in the film.
Early in the movie, Sara (Pamela Flores) refers to her son, Alejandro (Jeremias Herskovits), as her father. This relationship is mirrored by Brontis Jodorowsky, the actor who plays Jaime, Alejandro's father, who is actually Alejandro Jodorowsky's son.
Regarding the scene where the mother paints her naked son with black ink, plays hide-and-seek with him, and then agrees naked for him to paint her, director Alejandro Jodorowsky said he would like Jeremias Herskovits, as well as Pamela Flores, to be totally nude. The father of the young actor, who works in a school, pleaded with Jodorowsky not to do it because he was afraid he would be fired. So the director decided to shoot the scene with Herskovits wearing shorts.
Pamela Flores admitted that it was a daring thing to personify Sara. "I, as a woman, felt that something changed in me after doing this work, plus I had to dare to do things that may seem reprehensible, such as undressing and urinating on camera, in a society that is too fearful like Chile's, which has a long way to go in that sense", explained the soprano.
