Why Did Nobody Want to Pair with Sebastian Stan on Actors on Actors? - Main Image
Variety’s Actors on Actors series is a very unique show in that it usually puts up two actors from high-interest projects to talk to each other on camera. They did it with Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy for the Barbenheimer craze, and they even reunited Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway for a Devil Wears Prada reunion.
With Sebastian Stan being attached to so many buzzed-about projects like Thunderbolts* and A Different Man, he’s revealed that he was actually up for a spot on Variety’s interview show, but there’s one problem—nobody wants to be paired with him.

“Glen Powell delivers one hell of a performance.”
That is the headline of Connor Jameson’s (The First Picture House) review for Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the critically acclaimed comedy directed by Richard Linklater. In the film, Powell plays Gary Johnson, a professor moonlighting as a hit man for his city police department, descending into dangerous, dubious territory. Gary adopts numerous personas throughout the film, and that is what provides Powell with the opportunity to shine. The actor not only rises to the occasion as a leading man, but makes the movie work with his “entrancing” performance.
With raves like that (and the movie’s 95% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes), it’s no wonder that Powell is leading Gold Derby’s odds to take home the Golden Globe for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the dark horses that could disrupt the consensus five in Best Actor.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! You’re no doubt riding on the high of the news that Conan O’Brien will host this year’s Oscars, a decision that seems absolutely perfect and immediately raises my interest in the ceremony on March 2, 2025. But we’re not here to type about Conan. Instead, our focus this week is on the fellas in the Best Actor race. The remains the most static of our acting races — lacking both the depth of field and loud stan armies of the Best Actress race that we typed about last week. When we did our ridiculously early 2025 Oscar picks in March, we both picked Ralph Fiennes,...

American director, screenwriter and producer Todd Haynes has been named president of the international jury of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The Berlinale diamond jubilee (a 75th anniversary) will take place from February 13-23, 2025.
”Todd Haynes is a dazzlingly gifted writer and director with an impressive range; his body of work is at once stylistically versatile but also unmistakably his,” Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle said in a Thursday statement. “Ever since his debut feature ‘Poison’ won the Teddy Award in 1991, the Berlinale has followed and loved his filmmaking, and we are overjoyed to have him join the festival as the President of the International Jury for our 75th edition.”
The Teddy Award is the festival’s queer-film prize. “Poison” also won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Haynes’ 2002 film “Far From Heaven” was nominated for four Oscars.

Renate Reinsve is like you’ve never seen her before in the vicious schoolyard psychodrama “Armand.” The Norwegian actress teams up with writer/director Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel (the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman) to play an emotionally traumatized and career-busted actress summoned to the academy of her young son (of the title) to suss out a classroom skirmish involving Armand and another boy. An atmosphere of hysteria and panic floods in when her prior relationship to that other boy’s parents starts to sway emotions and allegiances and reveal past betrayals. It’s a role even more ambitious and demanding than the one that made her an international star in “The Worst Person in the World” as a millennial romantic in creative and personal freefall.

Sebastian Stan, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of an audience at the Miami Film Festival Gems event last week, is one of the top young actors in Hollywood. Though he’s only 42, he has been acting on screens big and small for more than 20 years. He has been a part of giant blockbusters (he plays Bucky Barnes in Marvel’s superhero movies) and prestige projects (I, Tonya on film and Pam & Tommy on TV). And he has received Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award noms. But he has never had a year as big as his 2024.
This year, Stan is in the running for a best actor Oscar nomination for not one but two performances: as Edward, an aspiring actor afflicted with the craniofacial condition neurofibromatosis who undergoes groundbreaking facial reconstructive surgery, in Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man,...

Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man has a mighty fine narrative vehicle for its centerpiece. There’s no doubt about that. The Sebastian Stan-starrer is absolutely gorgeous to look at, funny as hell, and proudly boasts the acting chops of its insane cast. Oh and did I mention the music? Umberto Smerilli’s soundtrack practically carries the movie. But since we’re not the type to jump on the hype train mindlessly, this seems like a safe enough space for me to tell you what I really think about the movie. Because if you ask me, I think A Different Man plays a bit too fast and loose with the idea of body dysmorphia for my liking. And all that “deep” stuff about appropriation and rejection were just name-dropped to make it come off deeper than it actually is. I’ll elaborate on all that as I go on.

It has already been a great year for Sebastian Stan thanks to his acclaimed performances in “A Different Man” and “The Apprentice” and the awards buzz and recognition that has come with each film. But the party won’t stop in 2025, even if Stan doesn’t land among the Best Actor nominees.
In May, Stan returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes a.k.a. The Winter Soldier in Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.”
On Saturday, during Disney’s first-ever D23 fan convention in Brazil, a new extended trailer for “Thunderbolts” made its debut, highlighting Stan’s effortless and brutal efficiency as Barnes as well as the project’s comedic tone.
“Thunderbolts” is Marvel’s answer to “The Suicide Squad” or an evolution off “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The film unites several Marvel antagonists, including Stan’s Barnes, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian (“Black Widow...

Next week we’ll start getting serious awards contenders on streaming when “Emilia Perez” debuts on Netflix. This week, though, it’s a light week. Which is not to say our top pick, coming-of-age comedy “My Old Ass,” isn’t worth watching on Prime Video, because it is — and the film’s young star Maisy Stella received a breakthrough award nomination from the Gotham Awards earlier this month.
Stella stars as Elliott, an 18-year-old who, during a mushroom trip, meets her 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza. Armed with her older self’s advice — and her phone number, so she can text her follow-up questions — Elliott navigates the excitement and heartbreak of the summer before college. It’s the kind of quirky indie comedy Sundance used to produce in droves. It’s now streaming on Prime Video.

After her 2021 breakout in The Worst Person in the World, Renate Reinsve’s 2022 and 2023 seemed fairly quiet for the viewer, but she was working on no shortage of projects that finally saw the light of day this year. Following A Different Man, Handling the Undead, Another End, and Presumed Innocent, she leads Armand, which marks the feature debut from Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman. Norway’s selection for Best International Film was picked up by IFC, who have unveiled the first trailer and news that they’ll release the Cannes selection for a qualifying run in NYC starting November 29, followed by a limited release on February 7 and a wide release on February 14 next year.
Here’s the synopsis: “When defamed actress Elisabeth (Renate Reinsve) is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours, she is presented with scathing allegations that trigger a tangled web...

A Different Man (Aaron Schimberg)
There are a lot of ways A Different Man could go and a lot of things it could be. Aaron Schimberg’s uniquely uncomfortable, uncomfortably unique feature sometimes plays as a reverse-Frankenstein medical horror, a tragic life-imitates-art satire, and a spiraling relationship drama. To its ambitious and distinct credit, it attempts packaging them all into ominous-sounding harmony, as if Charlie Kauffman’s surrealist Escher concoctions became a Twilight Zone episode modeled after David Lynch’s Elephant Man or Beauty and the Beast. It’s a dark, hilarious, and deeply unsettling portrait of a disfigured man that’s also an unflinching mirror of a looks-focused industry. – Jake K. (full review)

Renate Reinsve’s cinematic reign is here.
The “Worst Person in the World” Cannes Best Actress winner leads Norwegian thriller “Armand,” which will be released in theaters after Reinsve already made her American debut with “A Different Man.”
For “Armand,” Reinsve stars as defamed actress Elisabeth, who is abruptly called into a parent-teacher meeting after hours after her six-year-old son allegedly started a fight with his cousin on elementary school property. As the official synopsis teases, while Elisabeth is “presented with scathing allegations, a tangled web of accusations between parents and faculty is triggered … As Elisabeth struggles to uncover the truth amid the empty school rooms and dark corridors, a chaotic fight for redemption arises where desire, madness, and obsession prevail.”
Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Thea Lambrechts Vaulen, Endre Hellestveit, Øystein Røger, and Vera Veljovic co-star
Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman, makes his feature directorial debut with “Armand.

Aaron Schimberg’s 2024 darkly comic psychological thriller “A Different Man” (2024) begins as a psychological story about the insecurity of identity before taking a dive into the sci-fi genre and then finally transforming into a meta-commentary on identity as well as a satirical exploration of representation in the arts. But most importantly, it is about self-hatred leading to self-sabotage on account of searching for beauty in accordance with physical attributes governed by society.

“Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.
“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.
“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or-winning Anora from Neon has nabbed four Gotham Award nominations today including Best Feature, Best Director, Outstanding Lead Performance for Mikey Madison and Outstanding Supporting Performance for Yura Borisov.
Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers from Orion/Amazon MGM was nominated for Best Feature. The studio’s Nickel Boys by RaMell Ross had noms for Best Feature and Best Director.
The indie-centric awards last year removed a longstanding budget cap on eligibility, an opening for bigger budget studio and streamer fare to submit for consideration.
A24 films were everywhere with multiple nominations for Babygirl, I Saw The TV Glow, Sing Sing and A Different Man. The Brutalist, Janet Planet and Love Lies Bleeding had noms as well.
The October noms and early December ceremony are industry bellwethers, coming at the start of awards season in the crush of fall festival buzz.

Mexico’s official entry to the Oscars, “Sujo,” made a sweep of the 22nd Morelia Int’l Film Festival (Ficm), winning the festival’s Ojo Awards for Best Film, Director and Screenplay.
Co-helmer-scribes Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, whose debut pic “Identifying Features” won a couple of Sundance awards and took the Best International Feature prize at the Gotham Awards in 2021, also snagged the Sundance Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema with “Sujo,” their sophomore feature, in January.
Hailed by Variety as an “optimistic alternative to violent drug war movies,” the poignant coming-of-age story revolves around the impact of drug cartels on the youth. The tale follows young Sujo (played by Kevin Uriel Aguilar Luna and Juan Jesús Varela) who grows up surrounded by their violence. ‘A Different Man’ (2024) stands as one of the most emotionally gripping films of the year, pushing the boundaries of character transformation and identity with a visceral and unapologetic approach. Directed by Aaron Schimberg, known for his previous explorations of disfigurement and otherness, the film continues to explore the alienation of individuals who society deems "different." This time, Schimberg tackles a narrative that feels both personal and universal, underscored by the powerful performances of its lead actors. 'A Different Man' not only manages to provoke conversations about the body, identity, and societal judgment, but it also delves into how our perceptions of ourselves shift over time. The film follows Edward, played by Sebastian Stan, a man with neurofibromatosis who undergoes reconstructive surgery in an effort to escape his disfigured past and begin a new life. After his surgery, Edward becomes obsessed with an actor, Oswald (Adam Pearson), who portrays...

Sebastian Stan is about to have a very busy awards season. The man best known to devotees of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. the Winter Soldier) is earning raves for his portrayal of a young Donald J. Trump in Ali Abbasi's biographical drama "The Apprentice." Stan could very well earn further plaudits for his performance in "A Different Man," which already won him a Silver Bear for Best Performance at last February's Berlin International Film Festival. Here's hoping he doesn't overdo it, because after the Oscars are handed out next March, it'll be time to start promoting his role in the MCU extravaganza "Thunderbolts*".
Stan has had a fairly blessed career to this point. He's worked with some of the best directors to ever do it, and has that steady MCU franchise gig to keep him busy should the roles ever inexplicably dry up.

Sebastian Stan is on an absolute tear this fall, making appearances in acclaimed indies like A24’s “A Different Man” and the more recent young Donald Trump biopic, “The Apprentice,” evincing his range beyond superhero films. Of course, he’s made his name on his long-running role as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Solider in the Marvel universe films, having played the character in five movies, one TV series, and a seventh film on the way with next summer’s “Thunderbolts*” film.

Filmmakers and distributors of awards-hopefuls have until Nov. 4 to submit their category preference — drama versus musical or comedy — to the Golden Globes organization, which reserves the right to overturn any classification that it finds egregiously inaccurate.
Some of this year’s cases are inarguable — for instance, Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, in which characters spontaneously burst into song, is clearly a musical (if not a comedy), and A24’s The Brutalist, in which an immigrant faces all sorts of harrowing hurdles, is clearly a drama. There are, however, also plenty of close-calls, about which many have made assumptions, but, in most cases, not confirmed.
The Hollywood Reporter has been working the phones and can now report which way almost every contender is breaking. This intel is, of course, subject to change prior to Nov. 4, and to being overturned by the Globes thereafter — but it is current as of this writing.

After leading dark comedy “A Different Man” and Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice,” Sebastian Stan is slated for iconic filmmaker Elaine May’s fifth and final feature, “Crackpot.” However, production is still waiting on a shadow director for the 92-year-old May.
Stan said during “The Big Picture” podcast that he is on board the project, which was first announced in 2019. Dakota Johnson is set to co-lead alongside Stan, but Stan said he still doesn’t know the status of the film — and he’s casting his net in hopes of helping May find a shadow director to insure the movie. It’s a common set practice with older filmmakers.
“I have this thing, I don’t know if it’ll ever get going,” Stan said. “I have this thing that Elaine May was going to direct. It was going to be her last film and her first film since ‘Ishtar.

The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.)
The award for Best Makeup was introduced in 1981, following an outcry over the lack of recognition for Christopher Tucker‘s groundbreaking work on “The Elephant Man” (1980). Hairstylists began sharing the award with makeup artists in 1993 when “Mrs. Doubtfire” won.

The festival, which took place from October 4 through October 14, marked the U.S. premiere of John Crowley’s “We Live in Time,” with screenings of “Nightbitch,” “A Real Pain,” “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” and R.J. Cutler’s Martha Stewart Netflix documentary “Martha” among the acclaimed features.
Now, IndieWire can exclusively announce the films that the Hiff jury and audience members selected for the top awards. “Armand,” also Norway’s 2025 Oscar submission, won the Hiff Award for Best Narrative Feature. “Armand” stars “A Different Man” and “Worst Person in the World” breakout Renate Reinsve as a mother of a seemingly disturbed six-year-old; the film debuted at Cannes before screening at Hiff. “Armand” is directed by Halfdan Ullmann Tøndel, the grandson of Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman. As usual, A24 is on a rampage this year. The studio/distributor has released early the Oscar contenders Sing Sing and A Different Man. They’ve given us the horror gems MaXXXine and Love Lies Bleeding. They’ve made us think with Civil War and Planet Janet. They’ve even brought audiences two of the strangest films of the year with Tuesday and I Saw the TV Glow. And now, we’ve got their innovative little love story, We Live in Time.
We Live in Time is about a talented chef named Almut (Florence Pugh from Midsommar) and a smart marketing exec named Tobias. The two meet in a chance encounter, fall in love, and navigate the blue skies and stormy weather of a ten-year relationship.
The story of We Live in Time is typical sappy romance stuff.

A crucial change in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actor now has Ralph Fiennes saying, “Amen.” The “Conclave” star has officially broken his tie with Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”) at the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Fiennes now has leading 4/1 odds to win the trophy, compared to Domingo’s second-place odds of 9/2. It goes without saying that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things will undoubtedly keep changing as our Experts, Editors and Users continue to update their predictions.
Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence in the Focus Features mystery-thriller from director Edward Berger. Following the death of the Pope, Lawrence is tasked with overseeing the election of the successor, but he soon realizes many of the candidates have personal scandals that could upend the church. Fellow cast members include Stanley Tucci as Cardinal Bellini, John Lithgow as Cardinal Tremblay, Sergio Castellitto as Cardinal Tedesco and Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes.

John Lithgow, Geoffrey Rush and Kristine Froseth won top acting awards at Spain’s prominent Sitges Fantasy Film Festival, which wrapped its 57th edition on Oct. 13.
Making a sweep of the fest with three awards was Austrian Best International Feature Oscar entry “The Devil’s Bath” by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Drawn from historical facts, the Austrian-German co-production is described by Variety critic Jessica Kiang as a “story so pitilessly bleak you may want to look away; the filmmaking craft is so compelling that you can’t.” The historical horror drama, which vied for the Berlinale Golden Bear in February, follows Agnes, a depressed newlywed, who instead of committing suicide, considered taboo by her Christian community, commits a crime that would lead to her execution. The “suicide by proxy” practice was said to be common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in German-speaking Central Europe and Scandinavia.

It seems like a given that Sebastian Stan would have been warned against portraying controversial figure Donald Trump in The Apprentice, but one studio CEO went a step further in his caution.
During a conversation with The New York Times published ahead of the film’s release in theaters today, the actor shared what his family and friends said when he told them he was taking on the role and noted that he spoke to people before agreeing to it.
“Pretty sure my mom said, ‘At least you get to shave,'” Stan said. “But I asked a lot of people about it, actually. A CEO of a studio told me not to do it because I was going to alienate half the country, and a casting director, who I respect very much said, ‘We don’t need another Trump movie, you’re never going to get any applause for it.
