Netflix has unveiled three new Nordic originals as part of its 2025 slate, including the Swedish crime series “Synden,” the Danish fertility dramedy “Sult,” and season 3 of Norwegian romantic comedy series “Home for Christmas,” confirming its ambition to keep investing in Scandinavian content.

The Nordic market has gone through a rough patch in the last few years after the fallout of negotiations between the Danish producers guild and streamers; and the major restructuring at Viaplay which has put the brakes on local originals and is now partly owned by France’s Canal .

All three Nordic originals greenlighted by Netflix are backed by renowned creatives and producers.

“Synden” is written and directed by Peter Grönlund whose credits include “Goliat” and “Beartown.” The series follows the perpetually angry, odd but highly intelligent investigator Dani (Krista Kosonen) who is teamed up with newly graduated police colleague Malik (Mohammed Nour Oklah) to investigate the murder...

“The Terminal List” prequel series at Amazon Prime Video has cast Dar Salim in a key recurring guest star role, Variety has learned.

Salim has joined “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf” in the role of Mohammed “Mo” Farooq. He joins previously announced series lead Taylor Kitsch as well as cast members Chris Pratt, Jared Shaw, Tom Hopper, and Luke Hemsworth. Kitsch, Pratt, and Shaw will all be reprising the roles they played in “The Terminal List,” while Hopper will be playing Raife Hastings and Hemsworth will be playing Jules Landry.

Farooq is described as “An Iraqi Special Operations Forces (Isof) officer, formerly trained in the CIA Scorpions program. Mo was raised in a world of dictatorship and war. His mission is to strengthen his country and defend it against enemies without and within.”

Salim most recently starred opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the Guy Ritchie film “The Covenant,” which was released by Amazon and MGM Studios.

Nordic production powerhouse Miso Film, which looks to make a splash at the Berlinale Series with its daring HBO Max show “Lust,” is developing high-end international dramas with Scandinavian creatives such as Pilou Asbæk (“Borgen”), Ole Bornedal (“Nightwatch”) and Fenar Ahmad (“Darkland”). The company is part of Fremantle.

Ahead of the Berlinale, Miso founders Peter Bose and Jonas Allen discussed with Variety their ambition to find new voices and original ways to tell stories.

The banner, which just started shooting the third season of “Those Who Kill” and is about to begin filming Season 3 of “Face to Face” with Lars Mikkelsen, recently shot Norwegian sci-fi comedy “Blasted,” for Netflix. “Streamers have opened up new possibilities for genre,” said Allen.

BBC has acquired “Trom,” a crime drama set in the Faroe Islands, which will have its international premiere at the Berlinale Series Market Selects.

A Viaplay Original, “Trom” is produced by REinvent Studios with Kyk Pictures and Truenorth. REinvent International Sales represents worldwide rights. “Trom” will premiere on Viaplay on Feb. 13

Based on Jagvan Isaksen’s crime novels, “Trom” was created by Torfinnur Jákupsson and directed by Kasper Barfoed (“Dicte: Crime Reporter”) and Davíd Óskar Ólafsson (“The Valhalla Murders”). The cinematic show is headlined by Nordic stars including Ulrich Thomsen (“The New Pope”), Maria Rich (“Follow The Money”) and Olaf Johannessen (“The Exception”).

The Nordic noir crime series is penned by Torfinnur Jákupsson and Donna Sharpe, and is based on the best-selling novels by Faroese novelist Jógvan Isaksen. Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent Group) has announced the launch of its first-ever Faroese original drama production, a Nordic noir crime series entitled Trom and directed by Kasper Barfoed. In recent years, the Copenhagen-born helmer has worked on the features Summer of ’92 (2015) and The Numbers Station (2013) as well as on the TV series Dicte: Crime Reporter (2013-2014) and Gidseltagningen (2017). In detail, his new endeavour follows journalist Hannis Martinsson (played by Denmark’s Ulrich Thomsen), who unexpectedly receives a message from Sonja, a young Faroese woman who claims she is Hannis’s daughter and that her life is in danger. Reluctantly returning home to the Faroes to investigate, Hannis discovers Sonja’s body in the bloody waters of a whale hunt. His search for answers soon.

REinvent Studios’ anticipated crime series “Trom” is getting ready to shoot in the lush landscapes of the Faroe Islands with a cast packed with Nordic stars, including Ulrich Thomsen (“The New Pope”), Maria Rich (“Follow The Money”) and Olaf Johannessen (“The Exception”).

Sf Studios has boarded “Toscana,” Mehdi Avaz’s upcoming romantic drama starring Anders Matthesen that just started filming.

A tribute to love and food, “Toscana” also stars Christiana Dell’Anna (“Gomorra”) and Andrea Bosca (“Quantico”), as well as Ghita Nørby (“Silent Heart”), Lærke Winther (“Dicte”) and the singer Christopher. Matthesen, one of Denmark’s most popular actors, previously starred in the award-winning film “Out of Tune” and in the local hit movie “Ternet Ninja.”

Sf Studios is planning to release “Toscana” in theaters across the Nordics in December 2021. It marks the third feature film by Avaz, who made his feature debut with “While We Live” in 2017 and his sophomore outing with the 2019 drama “Collision.” The filmmaker also produced the critically acclaimed TV show “Alfa,” which recently bowed on TV2 Zulu.

Danish post-apocalyptic web series “The Rain” has been renewed for a third and final season on Netflix.

“Survival Squad: We’ll see you in 2020 for the third and final season,” the official Twitter account for the series tweeted Tuesday.

Mtg’s streaming service Viaplay has ordered a second season of its original series “The Great Escape,” a Swedish format which was named Children’s Program of the Year at last year’s Kristallen Awards.

“‘The Great Escape’ follows a Christmas calendar format, with a new episode released every day from Dec.1 to Christmas Eve, and is produced in Swedish, Norwegian and Danish versions. Beppe Singer, Ole André Sivertsen and Niels Christian Meyer headline a local cast in each respective country.

The series is being produced by Nexiko, a Stockholm-based production company, for Viaplay.

FremantleMedia has signed a deal to buy a majority stake in Miso Films, the Danish producer behind drama series Those Who Kill.

For an undisclosed sum, FremantleMedia is to take a 51% holding in the Scandinavian scriped drama business, founded in 2004 by Jonas Allen and Peter Bose.

The super-indie will also have the opportunity to acquire the remaining shareholding in the future.

Miso is currently working on epic war drama series and film 1864, which it claims is Denmark’s largest-ever production, along with a second series of investigative crime show Dicte, which aired on TV2 Denmark, TV4 Sweden and TV2 Norway.

FremantleMedia chief executive Cecile Frot-Coutaz described the acquisition as an “important milestone” in building the superindie’s primetime scripted business and strengthening its position in the Scandinavian market.
