Berg: Lulu

August was Lulu month for me; I watched four video productions plus the classic Pandora's Box with the divine Louise Brooks (a film that antedates the opera by several years). I was left shaking my head over this video from Munich Staatsoper in 2015. Marlis Petersen is excellent as Lulu, Bo Skovhus is perhaps the best Dr Schon we' ll ever see, Matthias Klink's Alwa is very moving, and Daniela Sindram sings Geschwitz very well, she's even a little scary in those black glasses. The problem lies with Dmitri Tcherniakov's stage direction which often left me wondering what was going on. The bland glass and steel cubicles were no help either. See this for the singers, not the staging.
