Legendary Entertainment has bought out Chinese multinational conglomerate Wanda Group’s remaining 60% equity interest in the studio known for the “Dune” and “Godzilla” franchises.
The transaction was funded entirely by Legendary using cash on its balance sheet. Legendary emphasized that it retains “significant excess liquidity” after the transaction to fund its current business and planned expansion. In 2023, the studio secured a five-year, $800 million credit facility led by J.P. Morgan.
“The purchase of Wanda’s remaining ownership interest is the next strategic step in Legendary’s long-range growth plan. With our outstanding creative team, headed by Mary Parent, developing, producing and marketing high-quality film and television and working with leading artists remains core to our expansion,” Legendary CEO Josh Grode said in a statement. “I want to thank and acknowledge Wanda, who has been an outstanding and supportive shareholder since 2016, and I congratulate them on this transaction.”

Legendary Entertainment has completed a buyout of Wanda Group’s remaining equity interest in a move CEO Josh Grode said ushers in a new era for the studio.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed but Legendary said it funded the transaction entirely from cash on its balance sheet for the deal led by Grode, without tapping partner Apollo Global. Legendary and Apollo now co-own the company and the board will be evenly split between management and the private equity giant that invested $760 million in Legendary in 2022.
Chinese conglomerate Wanda acquired the studio in 2016. “I think they were in a position where they needed some capital [and] the opportunity arose for us to buy Wanda’s interest at a valuation that would be very accretive to both management and Apollo. And so, as a result, we were able to get a transaction done,” Grode tells Deadline.

Legendary Entertainment, the producer of the “Dune” franchise, has bought out Dalian Wanda Group’s stake in the company. The pact leaves Legendary and Apollo Global Management in control. Terms of the sale, which Legendary financed itself via cash on its balance sheet, have not been disclosed. Legendary said it did not rely on outside financing for the transaction.
Dalian Wanda Group, a Chinese conglomerate, bought the entertainment company in 2016 for $3.5 billion. Apollo later bought a stake in Legendary in 2022 for $760 million.
Talks to buy out Wanda started roughly six months ago. In an interview, Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary, said he couldn’t remember if the discussions originated with Legendary or Wanda, but said the deal will help the company when it comes to possible expansion.

You might need to shield your eyes from all the gleaming Oscar statuettes earned by the stars and creator of Apple TV ’s new thriller Disclaimer, debuting this Friday. Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline lead a cast assembled by acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who won a pair of Oscars himself for directing Gravity and Roma. With a lofty pedigree like that, Disclaimer should be a sure-fire Emmy contender — but after seeing all seven episodes, I have to say it doesn’t quite live up to that pedigree. It’s a classic revenge tale with some lovely visual touches,...

Celebrities are more or less pillars of society, and everything they do happens in the public eye. It isn’t easy to maintain a perfect reputation or be the example everybody expects Hollywood stars or public figures to be. And above it all, it’s the criticism celebrities get for simply doing what they love doing that’s the worst. Unfortunately, Ayo Edebiri has had to deal with haters a lot.

As many may know, actor Kurt Russell began his professional screen career in 1963 when he was only 12 years old. He appeared in the Elvis Presley vehicle "It Happened at the World's Fair," wherein Russell's character was approached by the King and given a quarter to kick him in the shin. Elvis, you see, needed an excuse to visit a local nurse, and required a minor injury. The Russell character was only too happy to oblige.
Since then, Russell has enjoyed a prolonged and prolific acting career that has lasted to this day. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the young Russell was a golden child for Disney, appearing in a dozen movies for the company and becoming Disney's most profitable star. Now 73, Russell is currently appearing in the TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," and will soon play a notable role in an upcoming Smurfs feature film.

FX’s historical epic, “Shōgun,” can’t stop making history all its own. Following its record-breaking performance at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards — where the drama series became the most awarded single season in Emmy history — Anna Sawai has become the first actor of Asian descent to win the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. It was the “Pachinko” star’s first nomination.
Sawai was only the second actress of Asian descent to ever be nominated in the category. Her predecessor, Sandra Oh, was nominated four times between 2018-2022 for “Killing Eve.”
Although “Shogun” has been considered a frontrunner anywhere and everywhere it’s been nominated, the race for Best Drama Actress was seen as one of the more competitive categories. Each previous actor to play Queen Elizabeth II in “The Crown” won an Emmy, which made Imelda Staunton’s royal portrayal a popular choice in the series’ final season.

This side of "Star Trek" or "Doctor Who," it's hard to find a sci-fi TV show that had a more successful run than "Stargate Sg-1." The series, which is based on Roland Emmerich's 1994 movie "Stargate," ran for 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes, even switching networks along the way. For the actors involved, it was the sort of steady paycheck that is hard to come by in Hollywood. So, does Kurt Russell have any regrets about not reprising his role as Jack O'Neill? It sure doesn't sound like it.

Anna Sawai might not be a household name yet, but the 32-year-old is certainly getting there. Although she has been in various films since the mid-2000s, the Japanese star did not catch her big break until she was cast in the historical drama, Shōgun. While the actress had already shown the world her skills in 2023’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks show put her in the spotlight and even earned her an Emmy nomination.

Another day, another small-town mayor refusing to acknowledge that his town could be in grave danger. That's the gist of newly ordered-to-series Widow's Bay, an upcoming 10-episode horror-comedy set for Apple TV .
1428 Elm has learned that the show will be created by Katie Dippold, best known for writing The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Filmmaker Hiro Murai (Atlanta) will direct the pilot episode.
Apple didn't share much else about Widow's Bay just yet, unfortunately, except that it will be produced in-house by Apple Studios and the series is set in a cursed New England town. As mentioned above, something supernatural starts to threaten town residents but the mayor refuses to believe anything is wrong. Sounds like maybe the mayor from Amity Island relocated.
Dippold is credited as the showrunner and creator of the new series, which she also executive produces. Murai will executive produce as well, alongside Carver Karaszewski and Claudia Shin.

John Carpenter's "Escape from New York" gifted us with an unforgettable character referenced frequently in pop culture: Snake Plissken, brought to life by the brilliant Kurt Russell. Russell's cynical, no-nonsense approach to Plissken endures even after plans for a third "Escape" film fell through, and fans have been clamoring for the character's return, for good reason. A former U.S. Army Special Forces lieutenant who fought in World War III, Plissken was quick to turn to a life of crime after feeling betrayed and disillusioned by the country's federal government, firmly establishing him as an anti-hero figure of sorts. However, both in "Escape from New York" and "Escape from L.A.," Plissken is the one we unconditionally root for, as the rot of corruption that grips the dystopian future emerges as far more deep-rooted and disconcerting than the flaws of one man.

As the X-Men make their way into the MCU, fans have begun casting their versions of the characters for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, given that some characters did not make an appearance in the Fox-verse or the MCU.

While Olivia Munn was a terrific Psylocke, Marvel might be looking to cast someone younger for the role in the MCU. One of the fan-favorite competitors for the role has come out in the form of Anna Sawai, whose work in Shogun and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

"Pacific Rim" is one of the best American blockbuster movies of the 2010s ... or one of the best kaiju movies ever ... or even one of the best live-action anime movies not based on a specific anime (but still clearly inspired by "Patlabor" and "Tetsujin-28"). It's also a hugely important movie for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and an essential part of the Oscar-winner's filmography. After all, "Pacific Rim" was both his first original English-language script and his first original film in seven years -- not to mention the film that marked his transition into a full-time Hollywood director.
Still, as successful as the movie was, and as much as it depended on del Toro's unique visual style and imagination, a sequel (titled "Pacific Rim Uprising") was made without his involvement, meaning his original ideas for "Pacific Rim 2" were all scrapped. And though it seems unlikely that a third "Pacific Rim" will ever get made,...

Apple TV , which has built out a sizable lineup of sci-fi series, is doubling down on one of those shows.
The streamer has renewed Dark Matter, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, for a second season. The pickup comes not quite two months after the show’s nine-episode first season concluded in late June.
Dark Matter, from Sony Pictures TV, is based on a best-selling novel by Blake Crouch, who also serves as showrunner on the series. Edgerton stars as Jason Dessen, a physicist, professor and family man who, while walking home in Chicago, is abducted into an alternate version of his life and has to piece together how to get back — and who’s trying to prevent him from doing so. Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi and Oakes Fegley also star.

Women are falling out of focus on the small screen. According to a new report on gender and hiring in TV presented by IMDbPro and ReFrame — an initiative of Sundance Institute and Wif — women lost gains made over the past several years in nearly every position analyzed.
Last year’s data found that women (or gender-diverse performers) accounted for 54 percent of lead roles, while the new report details a decrease of 13 percent to 41 percent. Also released as part of the study, ReFrame and IMDbPro award a Stamp to recognize gender-balanced hiring on television shows, and this year 77 of the 200 most popular TV and streaming series of 2023-24 earned the distinction (or 38.5 percent). Wyatt Russell was born to Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn on July 10, 1986, eight days after "Big Trouble in Little China," his pop's third and lamentably final big-screen collaboration with John Carpenter, bombed at the box office. The martial arts action-fantasy movie didn't seriously damage Russell's career, but it did alter its trajectory a tad. Just about everything after "Big Trouble in Little China" was a two-hander or an ensemble piece. Though he could still mess around in nonsense like "Overboard" and "Captain Ron," he couldn't dominate a movie with a broad, endearingly dopey hero like Jack Burton anymore.
Kurt Russell has many different modes, but I grew up with a preference for his swaggering himbos, guys who were so supremely confident in their capabilities that, like Wile E. Coyote, they didn't realize how far off the edge of the cliff they'd run. Watching a lug like Burton scramble out of...

The Apple TV series "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters," like the film series that inspired it, skips around dramatically throughout history. Recall that "Kong: Skull Island," which came out after 2014's "Godzilla," was set mostly in 1973 after opening with a flashback to 1944. "Legacy of Monsters" likewise jumps back and forth a lot, exploring a present-day timeframe c. 2015 and a much earlier timeline set in the mid-1950s. To show the legacy of humans that work at Monarch -- the secret government agency assigned to oversee and wrangle kaiju -- both time frames feature the character Lee Shaw. In the 1950s, Shaw was one of the founding members of Monarch. In the '10s, he becomes re-immersed in Monarch after encountering the show's lead character, Cate (Anna Sawai).
In the 1950s, Shaw is played by Wyatt Russell, the star of "Overlord," "Everybody Wants Some!!," and "Night Swim." In the '10s segments,...

Anna Sawai has barely had enough time to digest receiving her first career Emmy nomination for her leading role of Lady Mariko in FX’s “Shōgun,” which earned a whopping 25 nominations for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. In an exclusive chat with Gold Derby recorded just hours after the nominations announcement (watch the video above), Sawai admits to feeling a bit overwhelmed. “It feels like it just got announced 15 minutes ago and I’m still processing it.”
It’s been a banner year for Sawai, who headlined not one, but two acclaimed shows: “Shōgun” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” which will return for a second season on Apple TV . In addition to the Emmy nomination, Sawai has also earned four Gold Derby TV Awards nominations and just recently won the TCA award for Individual Achievement in Drama.

The Streaming Wars are over and there is a clear winner — surprise, surprise, it's Netflix. Joining the pile of companies reconsidering this whole streaming thing is Apple TV , which is now vowing to stop throwing so much money at shows no one watches. Apple TV is watched and used about as much as U2's "Songs of Innocence" was listened to when it got released on iTunes for free, with Bloomberg reporting that Apple TV "generates less viewing in one month than Netflix does in one day."
When every studio and company began launching its own streaming service, there was an outcry over the return of cable but worse, which is something no one liked and is the reason so many of us flooded to Netflix in the first place.
