Roger Ebert: What's amazing is that Magnoli, the same man who could make a movie as good as "Purple Rain" could then turn around as bad as "American Anthem". And I'm telling you, this movie is as bad as any movie I have seen in 1986 and if I add years on my clock here, on my wrist watch, I think I would probably have to go back to 1984 to find a movie so inept that even the gymnast scenes, the gymnastics scenes themselves aren't interesting, even as sport. Even if you're interested in gymnastics, I don't even think- I bet the cast was bored at the cast screening of this movie.
