Tyler Perry, Regina King, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and “The Best Man’s” Malcolm D. Lee will be honored at the Critics Choice Association’s seventh annual Celebration of Black Cinema and Television.

Actor and comedian Jay Pharoah, best known for “Saturday Night Live” and his recent comedy special “Jared,” will host the gala on Dec. 9 at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air on Starz in January 2025. It will then be televised on Ktla and shown nationwide on select Nexstar stations through the month of February in honor of Black History Month.

Perry will be presented with the Icon Award, celebrating his body of work. In addition to his upcoming Netflix film “The Six Triple Eight”, Perry has helmed 24 feature films, 20 stage plays, 17 television shows and penned two New York Times bestselling books, in addition to establishing the 330-acre Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

Glen Powell’s upcoming Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers” has added four recurring guest stars.

Variety has learned that Clayne Crawford, Toby Huss, Colton Ryan, and Xavier Mills have all joined the series, in which Powell will play the title role in addition to co-creating it. The cast also includes Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson.

To celebrate its Netflix streaming debut on Friday, September 27, road trip documentary “Will & Harper” will screen at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles and cap off the first day of the 2024 Film Independent Forum.

Organized by Film Independent, the nonprofit arts group responsible for the Independent Spirit Awards, this annual forum will take place over two days (September 27 through 28) and feature topical discussions with over 40 filmmakers from around the world. This event also provides a space for attendees to network with independent filmmakers and content creators from various backgrounds.

Hulu’s drama The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Edward Kelsey Moore, is a heartfelt period piece reminiscent of other classic ensembles such as Waiting to Exhale or Steel Magnolias. The film follows three best friends, Odette (Aunjanue Ellis and Kyanna Simone), Barbara Jean (Sanaa Lathan and Tati Gabrielle) and Clarice (Uzo Aduba and Abigail Achiri), known as “The Supremes” because of how close the women are since their youth, who, for over four decades, face the difficulties of love, marriage, loss, grief and occasional joys that life has to offer. When a sudden illness and devastating heartbreak threaten to break the bonds of their friendship, they must figure out a way to survive the new storm with love and courage.

“The Accident” and “The Union” were the most-watched streaming originals in the U.S. by far during the week of Aug. 23-29, per Luminate.

“The Accident” led TV titles with 782 million minutes watched throughout the window, which marked its first full week of availability, while “The Union” was the top movie and top title overall, hitting 813.5 million minutes watched. Aug. 23-29 marked the Halle Berry-Mark Wahlberg film’s second full week of availability on the chart; it was No. 1 with 1.7 billion minutes watched on the previous chart.

The second-most-watched title on the TV chart was “Wyatt Earp and the Cowboy War,” which hit 500.2 million minutes watched in its first full week of streaming. “American Murder: Laci Peterson” had its second week on the chart, dropping to third place with 446.9 million minutes watched after its No. 1, billion-minute debut the week before.

She told Variety watching Vice President Kamala Harris accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency felt like “an outstanding check had finally been paid on the American dream.”

“It felt like the promise of America is still reaching toward fulfilling itself, and I think it makes me excited to know that the country, despite what we have seen in time, is still reaching forward toward becoming a more hopeful and more inclusive nation,” Aduba said.

Our top streaming pick this week, “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” is Kevin Costner’s spiritual sequel to his seven-time Oscar winner “Dances With Wolves.” The awards chances for “Horizon” look dimmer than “Dances,” though, especially after the passion project flopped in theaters.

The film is a Western epic following the arduous journeys of settlers and outlaws as they try to reach the frontier town of Horizon. In addition to Costner, who plays a stoic horse trader named Hayes Ellison, the sprawling cast includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Abbey Lee, and Luke Wilson, among many others. The release of in-the-can second part has been postponed indefinitely, but now that “Chapter 1” can potentially gin up some interest with its streaming release on Max, maybe “Chapter 2” will get a new date soon.

Despite a three-decade-long career, it’s a rarity for Ellis-Taylor to find herself cast in projects that pass the Bechdel test. “The Supremes,” which debuted at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff) on Wednesday night, is based on the best-selling novel by Edward Kelsey Moore. Directed by Tina Mabry, the film offered Ellis-Taylor and her castmates, Sanaa Lathan and Uzo Aduba, the chance to participate in something rarely seen on screen.
