It appears to be an adaptation of the idea as opposed to a follow-up. No characters from the film appear on the show, and the weed business is run by Bobby Glass instead of Mickey Pearson. In the film, Mickey intends to sell his empire, but at the end, says he's keeping the business. It's possible in the intervening years, Mickey sold the business to Bobby Glass, so he could retire. But Susie Glass mentioned her father built the empire himself.
