Acclaimed director Greg Mottola has revealed that his plans for a sequel to Confess, Fletch, starring Jon Hamm as the iconic investigator Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher, have been scrapped due to interference from the film’s studio.
Mottola, known for helming comedic hits like Superbad, had written a script based on Gregory Mcdonald’s 1978 Fletch novel Fletch’s Fortune. But the director claims Miramax, which controls the rights to the book franchise, shut down the project under new leadership without giving the follow-up a chance.
“I was told the first film lost money, though no real effort was made to promote it,” Mottola lamented on social media. “Feature comedy is a tough sell these days.”
The setback is just the latest in a long line of obstacles for the beloved Fletch character. Originally made famous by Chevy Chase in 1985’s Fletch and its 1989 sequel, multiple attempts over the years to bring...

“My comedy is too dry and unsentimental for the new masters,” says Greg Mottola of his cancelled Confess, Fletch sequel.
A planned sequel to the 2022 comedy Confess, Fletch is no longer happening, its director and co-writer Greg Mottola has confirmed. Jon Hamm, who played the title role of Irwin ‘Fletch’ Fletcher, was keen to return for at least one further film, and a script had been written, but a changing of executives at Miramax appears to have ended the chances of it getting made.
“Alas, the new head of Miramax, who controls the rights to all the books, shot down my sequel project,” Mottola wrote in response to a post written by critic Bilge Ebiri on Twitter/X/Muskbook. “The Fletch curse got me.”
With that response triggering messages from other users who expressed their affection for the comedy thriller, Mottola responded with some surprisingly candid insights into the sequel’s cancellation.

Fans of the Fletch franchise might need to console themselves with a steak sandwich or two.
Greg Mottola, who directed the 2022 feature Confess, Fletch, took to social media to give an update about his planned sequel to the film that starred Jon Hamm as Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher. Hailing from Miramax, Mottola’s movie rebooted the character that originated in author Gregory Mcdonald’s novel series and was memorably played by Chevy Chase in the 1985 comedy Fletch and its sequel four years later.
After film critic Bilge Ebiri posted this week on X (formerly Twitter) that Hollywood should make more Fletch movies, Mottola pointed out that his sequel to Confess, Fletch was no longer in development, with the director attributing the setback to a change of leadership at Miramax. At the time of the Confess, Fletch release, Mottola said in an interview that he had already been hired to write a...

Fletch may have once lived but he is indeed now dead — or, the future of his movies are, at least. Greg Mottola, who resurrected the snarky private investigator (and Los Angeles Lakers’ #99) in 2022, has confirmed that the future of the character is as dead as a doornail, with no sequel planned for Confess, Fletch.
Posting to social media this week, Greg Mottola confirmed that the Fletch series will once again lay dormant, with the director having brought back the character — via Jon Hamm — more than 30 years after Fletch Lives. “Alas, the new head of Miramax, who controls the rights to all the books, shot down my sequel project. The Fletch curse got me.” Mottola is here referring to the numerous attempts to get the character back on the big screen, with various iterations involving Kevin Smith (easily the most vocal supporters of another Fletch), Bill Lawrence and more seeing differing levels of hope.

They have also since co-starred again in the 2022 comedy and third installment of the “Fletch” series,...

If his post-“Mad Men” career has taught us anything, it’s that Jon Hamm is a natural comic actor who happens to be great in dramatic roles rather than the other way around. At the risk of downplaying his exemplary work as Don Draper, the 52-year-old has seemed most in his element in the likes of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and especially last year’s criminally underseen “Confess, Fletch.” “Maggie Moore(s)” finds him somewhere in the middle of the comedy/drama spectrum as a small-town police chief investigating the murders of two women with the same name — an intriguing premise to be sure, but one that Hamm’s “Mad Men” co-star John Slattery, in his sophomore directorial effort, struggles to bring to a satisfying conclusion.
Part of the problem is that it isn’t actually a mystery. Beginning with a title card informing us that “some of this actually happened,...

Kendall Roy’s new watch on the latest and final season of Succession is hardly a quiet luxury.
The Roy scion — who on earlier seasons favored timepieces by more traditional makers like Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe — is now rocking a much flashier item on his wrist: a sporty Rm 67-01 by Richard Mille that qualifies as a ten-table watch (meaning a watch that’s ostentatious enough to be noticeable by people 10 tables away at a restaurant).
Richard Mille Rm 67-01
The watch is hardly there by mistake. Its presence signals the new chapter in Kendall’s life as he and brother Roman take the reins of their father’s company, and it was personally chosen by actor Jeremy Strong after an exec at Richard Mille sent it to him. “Those are all things that I do on my own because those details just feel really important to me, and...

Forget about who’s on first: It’s all about which Maggie Moore is the real Maggie Moore.

The “Mean Girls” musical has cast “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm as Coach Carr. The Emmy-winning actor and star of “Confess, Fletch” and “Beirut” will play the school’s gym teacher and sex-ed instructor. The film will adapt the Broadway musical, which in turn was an adaptation of the 2004 theatrical comedy “Mean Girls.”
The Paramount film, about a teen girl who moves from Africa with her anthropologist parents and finds herself unprepared for the community dynamics of an American public high school earned solid reviews and grossed $130 million worldwide on a $17 million budget in early 2004, becoming a generational touchstone on par with “Clueless” and “Heathers.” This live-action musical version will debut on Paramount .

The "Fletch" movies have always been the product of turmoil. I.M. Fletcher, a hybrid private eye and journalist, made his first appearance in Gregory McDonald's 1974 novel "Fletch," following the investigator as he looks into a shady but tempting offer from a fat cat billionaire. His big-screen debut came in Michael Ritchie's ("Bad News Bears") 1985 feature of the same name, starring Chevy Chase in the lead role of the loose adaptation; it was a box-office smash. Four years later, the sequel "Fletch Lives" saw Chase and Ritchie reprising their respective roles in a follow-up Roger Ebert once described as a "dispirited slog through the rummage sale of movie cliches."
Since then, Fletch has undergone more iterations than his numerous implausible identities. The most talked about version is Kevin Smith's unproduced "Fletch Won," which he envisioned as a Miramax vehicle for "Mallrats" star and frequent Smith collaborator Jason Lee.

John Carpenter prefers to experience horror onscreen, not on set.
The legendary director, while reflecting on his decades-spanning career, admitted that he nearly walked away from filmmaking after the experience of 1992’s “Memoirs of an Invisible Man.” Based on H. F. Saint’s 1987 science fiction novel, the film starred Chevy Chase as a businessman who becomes invisible after an experimental procedure. Frequent Carpenter collaborator Sam Neill plays a government operative who tries to capture Chase’s character. Daryl Hannah, Michael McKean, and Stephen Tobolowsky also star.
“Chevy Chase, Sam Neill — who I love and had a longtime friendship with — and Warner Bros., I worked for them, and it was pleasant,” Carpenter told Variety, before adding, “No, it wasn’t pleasant at all. I’m lying to you. It was a horror show. I really wanted to quit the business after that movie.”

The ten best films of 2022, in five double features:
10. “Benediction” and 9. “Bros”
How does one become a fully integrated member of society — an artist, a lover, a participant in the marketplace of ideas — when that society constantly rejects your very presence and participation? Two of this year’s best took very different looks at gay creatives looking for love and fulfillment, about a century apart; “Benediction,” Terence Davies’ haunting biopic of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden) takes a much different path than the raucous rom-com starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, but both films followed men seeking their heart’s desire in a world that judges that desire. (The exceptional LGBTQ films “Fire Island” and “The Inspection” fit this category as well.)
8. “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and 7. “Women Talking”

John Slattery looks terrible. “I hate to dash your hopes,” the 60-year-old tells me down the phone from New York. “I’m in sweats. I’m making a cup of tea. I’ve just exercised. I…” He pauses, grasping for the right word to describe his current ghoulishness. He sighs. “I look like s***.” I can’t verify the alleged horror-show that is his appearance, but I’m not sure I believe him. Not John Slattery? Not Mad Men’s impeccably tailored bon vivant Roger Sterling? But he’s the king of pocket squares! With hair as white and well-coiffed as a Dulux pup!
Slattery is ruining his public image while at home with his pet dog circling his feet, his voice, at least, just as we remember it – that smooth, honeyed cadence that makes him Hollywood’s go-to for raconteurs, statesmen and authority figures. Tony Stark’s industrialist dad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

With all the (justified) media notice of the surprise success of micro-budget horror film “Terrifier 2” (Iconic), studio-made but still low-budget “Barbarian” (Disney/3.99) is adding to its much bigger take with an amazing response on multiple home platforms.
The 4.5 million budget release from their Fox unit isn’t remotely aligned with what Disney ownership sees as a priority in their productions. It already has an over 40 million domestic theatrical gross.
It popped up on both HBO Max and Hulu 45 days after theatrical release. The availability came with no PVOD first, which is somewhat different than is typically seen from many studios taking the direct revenue from rentals and purchases ahead of subscriber-based streaming appeal.
The most amazing note on “Barbarian” is that it is #1 at Vudu, which ranks by revenue and usually favors higher-priced titles. An explanation could be that its 14.99 download sales boosted its figures. At iTunes and Google Play,...

Academy Award-nominee Annie Mumolo, Reid Scott, Perry Mattfeld and Jordan Aaron Hall have joined the cast of Prime Video’s “The Idea of You,” starring and produced by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway.
The quartet join the cast as production has started on the Amazon Original movie, which is based on the best-selling, contemporary love story of the same name by Robinne Lee.
“The Idea of You” centers on Solène, a 40-year-old single mom who is “serendipitously blindsided by a second chance at love” with the lead singer of the world’s hottest boy band. Scott is set to play Solène’s estranged husband Dan, whose decision to end their marriage and subsequently cancel his Coachella trip with their 16-year-old daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin) kicks off the film’s plot.
According to the film’s synopsis, it’s at the festival, among the crowds and desert heart, where Solène meets and...

Chevy Chase is no longer part of the “Community” community.
Series creator Dan Harmon discussed the possibility of Chase reprising his role from the original NBC series for the upcoming Peacock film. “I don’t even know if it’s legal for him to come back,” Harmon said during a moderated New York Comic Con discussion (via Variety). “That may be out of my hands. There may something I sign for with an insurance company.”
“Community” debuted in 2009 and centered on a dysfunctional community college, with Chase, Joel McHale, Danny Pudi, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Yvette Nicole Brown as students. Jim Rash and Ken Jeong played school administrators. Chase, Brown, and Glover were not tagged in lead star McHale’s social media post announcing the film after a years-long #SixSeasonsandaMovie campaign.
Dan Harmon and Andrew Guest will write and executive produce the movie.

Kyle MacLachlan is one of the great actors part of David Lynch’s company, turning up in some of his most famous—and infamous—works in both film and television.
But that doesn’t mean Kyle MacLachlan is a David Lynch scholar. Even the star of Dune, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks is a little confused by the perplexing works of Lynch. In a recent interview with The A.V. Club, MacLachlan said, “I don’t pretend to understand much of what David does, but I do recognize that I’m his conduit through these worlds, and that’s a challenge—and also, I feel pretty good about that. There’s a confidence that I understand what’s necessary for me to do with David.”
He continued, “There’s still the large chunks of data that I don’t understand, and I don’t need to understand, honestly. His movies are experiential,...

Jon Hamm joined host Miles Teller for the cold open of tonight’s season premiere of Saturday Night Live (1 October).
The Mad Men and Confess Fletch starplayed himself in the sketch, which spoofed ESPN’s football analysis show ManningCast. Teller was cast as Payton Manning while SNL regular Andrew Dismukes appeared as his brother Eli Manning.
After a one-line cameo from snowboarder Shawn White, Hamm poked fun at Teller by claiming the show sometimes resorted to stunt casting. “Sometimes they need to bring in a real celebrity when the host isn't that famous,” he commented. “I mean, when they couldn't get the star of the big summer movie, your Tom Cruise or your Jon Hamm, they had to get the co-star.”
Teller starred alonside Cruise and Hamm in this year’s Top Gun: Maverick.
The self-referential routine also featured the characters offering a scathing assessment of a sketch set at Mar-a-Lago,...

What did it take to get “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/4.99-5.99) back to #1 on all three of the VOD charts we follow? A steep price cut. The summer hit enjoyed two across-the-board #1 weeks when it was initially released (at 19.99 to purchase), but then had to share top position with “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony/19.99) and “Beast” (Universal/19.99) by mid-September.
“Maverick” rebounding to #1 at iTunes and Google Play, both of which rank by traffic, isn’t surprising, but it is a rare lower-cost film to also take top spot at Vudu, which ranks by revenue. The film’s position means it had four times or more the activity of any film costing 19.99. Even more impressive? All of this comes ahead of whenever the film starts streaming on Paramount .
At Netflix, two new films, both from heavyweight talent with whom the streamer is in business, lead at the moment. “Lou,” starring Allison Janney...

Kyle MacLachlan has a confession to make: He doesn’t listen to Edm.
The “Confess, Fletch” star revealed that his “quirky” character was scripted to be a fan of electronic dance music, which MacLachlan was not familiar with prior to filming.
The script “initially said, ‘Edm,’ and I didn’t know what that meant when I first started out, so I was like, ‘Ok,'” MacLachlan said.
“They said, ‘It’s electronic dance music,’ and I said, ‘Oh, Ok, great. I do love some of that. I like electronica a little bit,'” MacLachlan told ScreenRant. “So then Greg said, ‘Well, why don’t you bring me some suggestions of music that you like.’ So I started listening to Edm and I don’t even remember the name of the bands, but I was all over the place.”
The “Dune” alum added, “I wanted something that was kind of…I...
