Exclusive: Adriyan Rae lands recurring role on Netflix’s Forever created by Mara Brock Akil.

Forever is a reimagination of the 1975 novel by Judy Blume and follows the epic love story of two Black teens exploring their identities through the awkward — and moving — journey of being each other’s firsts in 2018 Los Angeles. Like its inspiration, the show will examine “the idea of your first love being with you forever,” said Brock Akil, who created acclaimed stories of Black love and growth like sitcom Girlfriends and drama Being Mary Jane. She was also a writer on the YA comedy Moesha.

Oscar winner Regina King (One Night in Miami) will serve as executive producer and will direct the first episode.

Exclusive: Shout! Studios has found a sleepover home for Slumber Party Massacre, a contemporary reimagining of the cult 1982 feature film from Roger Corman and Amy Holden Jones. The new pic, directed by The Banana Splits Movie and Vagrant Queen helmer Danishka Esterhazy from a screenplay by Ash Vs. Evil Dead‘s Suzanne Keilly, will debut later this year on Syfy.

Hannah Gonera, Frances Sholto-Douglas, Mila Rayne, Alex McGregor and Reze-Tiana Wessels star in the update, which wrapped last month in South Africa. Shout! Studios, which developed and executive produced will handle the movie’s worldwide sales and distribution across multiple platforms after bringing in Blue Ice Pictures to serve as producers.

The news comes after Shout! acquired the New Horizon Picture library, which encompasses 270 Roger Corman films.

Firehouse 51 is getting a new paramedic. 

The NBC juggernaut has cast Vagrant Queen actress Adriyan Rae as Gianna Mackey for its ninth season, according to Deadline. 

What's more, Rae has been set as a series regular from the jump, so fans will have a lot of time to get to know Gianna. 

Mackey is described as "a lovable troublemaker with a twinkle in her eye", while also being "charming, scrappy, fun, witty and good-natured."

While best known for her role on Vagrant Queen, in which she played the lead actress of Elida in the one and done series, she has also appeared on Fatal Attraction, Atlanta, Star, Brockmire, American Soul, and Light as a Feather.

On the big screen, she has had roles on Burning Sands and Superfly.

While the concept of new scripted shows may already feel like a bygone idea in this era of pandemic-frozen productions, Syfy is actually moving forward with one such offering in The Surrealtor. Moreover, the main cast of the series has been officially announced, with a headliner familiar to viewers of the channel in Wynonna Earp’s Tim Rozon.

The Surrealtor, which landed a 10-episode series order back in February—alongside its touted Day of the Dead series—signals momentum with the announcement of its main cast players. The series puts a fixer-upper spin on the Ghostbusters paranormal exterminator dynamic, showcasing the exploits of realtor Nick Roman (Rozon), who leads an elite team who specialize in dealing with property-polluting poltergeists, fixing the things that go bump in the night so that deals can be closed, all while struggling with personal demons of their own.

Schitt’s Creek alums Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy, along with Adam Korson (Seed), Maurice Dean Wint (The Kid Detective), Savannah Basley (Wynonna Earp) and Tennille Read (Workin’ Moms) are set as series regulars in The Surrealtor, Syfy’s upcoming drama series from Blue Ice Pictures. The 10-episode series begins production September 15 in Newfoundland, Canada.

Developed for television by George Olson, The Surrealtor follows realtor Nick Roman (Rozon) and an elite team of specialists that handle the cases no one else can: haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away. Researching, investigating and “fixing” the things that go bump in the night, the team works to create closure—and closings — even as they struggle with demons of their own.

Exclusive: Canadian director Danishka Esterhazy, whose recent projects include helming Lifetime’s TV pic I Was Lorena Bobbitt and horror comedy The Banana Splits Movie, has signed with Paradigm.

The move comes as has come aboard as producer-director on the new Syfy series The Surrealtor, which is set to begin shooting in Newfoundland in the fall. The project reunites Esterhazy with the network after Banana Splits Movie, a dark reboot of the Hanna-Barbera children’s series. It bowed at San Diego Comic-Con last year before premiering on Syfy in October.

Esterhazy also recently directed episodes of Syfy’s action adventure Vagrant Queen starring Adriyan Rae, which bowed in March.

Epix will serve as the new Stateside home for the UK fantasy drama Britannia, rerunning Season 1 on Sunday, Aug. 2, before premiering Season 2 on Sunday, Oct. 4. Epix — which grabbed the Britannia baton from Amazon — will also be the exclusive U.S. home for Season 3, now in production.

It’s the end of the trek for Vagrant Queen. Syfy has canceled the space drama, a live-action adaptation of the Vault Comics series from Blue Ice Pictures, after one season, Deadline has confirmed.

The series struggled ratings-wise, averaging 417,000 total viewers and just 131,000 among the P18-49 demo in Live 7.

Created by Jem Garrard, who also served as showrunner, Vagrant Queen followed Elida from child queen to orphaned outcast, as she scavenged the treacherous corners of the galaxy. Adriyan Rae played the lead role of Elida, along with Tim Rozon as Isaac, and Paul du Toit as the menacing Commander Lazaro.

Lance Samuels & Daniel Iron (Goalie) executive produced with F.J. DeSanto & Damian Wassel of Vault Comics. Mika Collins (Deep Six) and Mariko Tamaki (Skim) served as writers, Garrard (Mech X4) and Danishka Esterhazy (Banana Splits) were among the directors.

Syfy has opted to cancel the space drama based on the Vault comic of the same name after one season.

The series, from creator and showrunner Jem Garrard, struggled to find an audience after launching in March. The drama starring Adriyan Rae as a child queen and orphaned outcast scavenging the galaxy, averaged 417,000 total viewers and a mere 131,000 in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demo when factoring in seven days of delayed viewing.

Melanie Scrofano has always been one of the elements integral to making Wynonna Earp so damn good, but she’s diversifying her contributions even further in Season 4 by stepping behind the camera to direct an episode.

“I’m very excited to bring my experience as Wynonna Earp to the director’s chair for an episode of Season 4,” said Scrofano in an official press release. “I’ve had the great luck to learn from some of the best directors and showrunners in the business and hope that viewers will enjoy the episode as much as I’ve enjoyed directing it.”

The end is just around the corner for The Magicians. The current fifth season of the fantasy drama series will be its last; the April 1 Season 3 finale will serve as series finale.

Created by John McNamara and Sera Gamble based on Lev Grossman’s novels, The Magicians for years was Syfy’s top series. Creators/executive producers McNamara and Gamble have served as showrunners of The Magicians since Day one; at the start of Season 5, fellow exec producer Henry Alonso Myers was named co-showrunner alongside them.

While they did not go into Season 5 knowing that it would definitely will be the show’s final chapter, I hear they wrote the Season 5 finale so it could also work as a series finale.

And for its final trick, “The Magicians” is bidding farewell.

Syfy has announced that the current fifth season of the fantasy show will be its last. Season 5, which is scheduled to last 13 episodes, premiered in Jan. 2020, meaning that the series finale will air on April 1.

Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. The series first premiered on Syfy in January 2016, and has been one of its most consistent shows over the last four years.

News of the show’s end means that the NBCUniversal-owned cabler’s scripted roster has been whittled down to only a couple of returning series. However, Syfy is gearing up to premiere several new offerings in the near future, and recently ordered a pair of shows including one inspired...

Syfy has a brain-eating series in mind.

The network has issued a 10-episode order for a show inspired by George A. Romero’s classic zombie movie “Day of the Dead.”

The remake will tell the intense story of six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion. It is described as an ode to Romero’s famous flesh-eaters that reminds us that sometimes all it takes to bring people together is a horde of hungry zombies trying to rip them apart.

The series is being produced by Cartel Entertainment. Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas will serve as writers and showrunners. Romero’s original pic was released in 1985, and was the third installment in his “Night of the Living Dead” series. “Day of the Dead” has been remade twice for the big screen, most recently in 2018 with “Outlander” star Sophie Skelton involved.

Syfy has given 10-episode straight-to series orders to Day of the Dead, based on George A. Romero’s classic zombie film, from Cartel Entertainment (Creepshow); and The Surrealtor, from Blue Ice Pictures (Ginny and Georgia). Both are expected to air on Syfy in 2021.

The Day of the Dead order follows the straight-to-series pickup by Syfy of another classic horror movie title, Chucky, as the network continues to expand its slate into the horror genre. Syfy has been investing in high-end scripted content with a focus on edgy, younger-skewing shows with off-kilter sensibility, including comic book adaptations.

The NBCUniversal cable network, which is mounting a major push in animation, also has been increasingly betting on straight-to-series orders vs. pilots with four in a row: Vagrant Queen, based on the comic and also produced by Blue Ice Pictures, Chucky, Day of the Dead and The Surrealtor. Syfy will air a Wynonna Earp “Fan Favorites” marathon in March, as one part of a wide-ranging “We Are Her(oes)” Women’s History Month programming event.

The Earp-athon (of what is in actuality just the first 10 episodes of Season 3) will air across three Fridays — March 6 (from 6:30-9:30 am Et), March 20 (6:30-10:30 am) and March 27 (6 to 9 am) — leading up to an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming (and lonnnnnng-awaited) Season 4, during the network’s 20 Women to Watch in 2020 documentary special (airing Friday, March 27 at 11 pm).

The new Syfy series Vagrant Queen will premiere on Friday, March 27, in the 10 Pm slot. The 10-episode live-action series is an adaptation of the namesake original comic book series published by Vault Comics.

The star-spanning adventure is produced by Blue Ice Pictures and features the work of an all-female team of writers and directors. Jem Garrard is the show’s creator and showrunner.

Great news for Chucky fans! We've known that a series has been in development at Syfy, but you never know if the pilot is going to get picked up for a full series order. Today, it has been officially announced that Syfy placed a straight-to-series order for Chucky, a TV series that will continue the original series storyline with Don Mancini as writer and showrunner:

Pasadena, CA – January 11, 2020 – Syfy has placed a straight to series order for Chucky, the red-haired, freckled-faced doll possessed by the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Produced by Ucp, the series will be executive produced by creator Don Mancini, David Kirschner, and Nick Antosca via his banner Eat the Cat, through his overall deal with the studio. Emmy®-nominated Harley Peyton will also serve as executive producer. Mancini, who penned the film franchise, will also write the adaptation, serve as showrunner and direct the first episode.

Chucky is coming to TV. Syfy has given a straight-to-series order to Chucky, a series revolving around the character at the center of the horror/slasher Child’s Play film series, the red-haired, freckled-faced doll possessed by the soul of notorious serial killer, Charles Lee Ray. The series order was announced Saturday during NBCUniversal’s presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, CA.

The series, produced by Universal Content Productions, comes from the Chucky movie franchise creator/writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner as well as TV writer-producer Nick Antosca, creator of Syfy’s anthology series Channel Zero, and his studio-based Eat the Cat banner.
