Dom found out that Brian set Letty up for a job that led to her death.
After his girlfriend Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) is murdered in Los Angeles while working as a courier for notorious, but never photographed, Mexican drug lord Arturo Braga, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel), now an international criminal, returns to L.A. to find out who is responsible for Letty's death. Meanwhile, Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), now an FBI agent, is also searching for Braga. When they both get leads to car mechanic David Park (Ron Yuan), their paths cross, and when a spot opens up on Braga's driving team, they find themselves in competition for it.
Fast & Furious was filmed from a screenplay written by American screenwriter Chris Morgan, using characters created by Gary Scott Thompson in the first movie of the Fast and Furious franchise. Fast & Furious is the fourth movie in the series, preceded by The Fast and the Furious (2001), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006), and followed by Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017) and F9: The Fast Saga (2021).
Actually Fast & Furious takes place prior to Tokyo Drift, before Han (Sung Kang) flees to Tokyo, and five years after the first movie, The Fast and the Furious, evidenced when Dom's sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) says to Brian, "That's all you have to say after five years?"
Fast & Furious can be viewed as a stand-alone, but those who have seen all four movies recommend seeing The Fast and the Furious before watching this movie. The details of Brian and Dom's relationship, Brian's relationship with Mia, Dom's criminal history, and why Brian let Dom go free is the subject of The Fast and the Furious. Knowing these details makes the references in this movie more meaningful.
Dom is the leader of a crime ring that hijacks semis in order to steal the merchandise from the back. In The Fast and the Furious, they mostly went after electronics. At the beginning of Fast & Furious, they are into stealing "liquid gold" (gasoline) from gas tankers in the Dominican Republic. He was also active in the world of illegal street racing.
He didn't. After letting Dom evade arrest at the end of The Fast and the Furious, Brian quit the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and made his way to Miami where he was apprehended by U.S. Customs agents during a street race and given a deal by the FBI, offering to expunge his criminal record in exchange for him going undercover again in order to bring down a big drug importer. That story is told in 2 Fast 2 Furious.
Unbeknownst to Dom, Letty made a deal with Brian in exchange for the FBI clearing Dom's name. She agreed to go undercover as one of Braga's couriers in order to get evidence against him. However, Braga considers his drivers to be disposable and has them shot after they complete their jobs so that he doesn't have to pay them. Letty was able to get away, but Fenix (Laz Alonso) hunted her down, crashed her car, and killed her. SPOILER: We find out at the end of fast five that letty is not dead.
Since Dom won the race and got the fourth seat on Braga's driving team, Brian had to find another way to get on the team. Consequently, he planted the drugs to get Dwight (Greg Cipes) arrested so that he wouldn't be able to drive. With Dwight temporarily in jail, Brian was able to take his place, since he came in second in the race against Dom.
When the deal to exchange the heroin for $6,000,000 goes sour and Braga escapes to Mexico, Brian and Dom decide to follow him. They find Braga praying in a church, apprehend him, and head back to the border, Braga riding with Brian, and Dom right behind. They make it only a few miles into the Mexican desert when they realize that they're being followed by Fenix along with dozens of Braga's henchmen. Brian leads them into the same tunnel through which they transported the heroin into the United States. Fenix succeeds in totaling and flipping Brian's car just as they break through to the U.S. side of the tunnel. Fenix pulls Braga from the wreck then cocks his gun and returns to kill Brian, who is severely injured from the crash. Suddenly, Dom breaks free of the tunnel and comes barreling after Fenix, crushing him against his own car. As police cars and helicopters start arriving at the scene, Brian tells Dom to get out of there, but Dom replies, "I ain't runnin' anymore", and chooses to stay with Brian. Braga and Dom are taken into custody by the police. Dom is forced to stand trial and is sentenced to 25 years in Lompoc Penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. In the final scene, Dom is being transported to Lompoc in the prison bus. He looks out the window to see Brian, Mia, and two other guys racing alongside on an intercept course.
