OpenAI is firing back at The New York Times after the company was sued for copyright infringement over the use of the publisher’s articles to train its artificial intelligence chatbot.
In a blog post, the Sam Altman-led firm said that the Times is “not telling the full story” and claimed it “intentionally manipulated” prompts to make it appears as if ChatGPT generates near word-for-word excerpts of articles.
“Even when using such prompts, our models don’t typically behave the way The New York Times insinuates, which suggests they either instructed the model to regurgitate or cherry-picked their examples from many attempts,” the post states.
OpenAI maintained that such verbatim regurgitation is a “rare bug.” There are guardrails in place to limit “inadvertent memorization,” added the company, which stressed that users are barred under its terms of use from prompting models to produce answers that may violate intellectual property rights.

Paramount Plus is taking a page from ViacomCBS’s Pluto TV streaming service with the launch of 18 linear channels that let subscribers surf through always-on themed collections of shows — just like old-fashioned television.
On Thursday, Paramount Plus launched Live Channels, a new feature that curates popular shows and movies on the service in linear channels, pulled from ViacomCBS properties including CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, BET and the Smithsonian Channel as well as from other sources.
The themed “live” channels, streaming 24 hours per day, feature the service’s most-streamed genres, such as Kids & Family Fun, Crime & Justice and Reality TV: Competitions, as well as fan-favorite franchises such as “Star Trek,” “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Paw Patrol.”
Paramount Plus is adopting the linear TV-style model pioneered by Pluto TV, which Viacom acquired in early 2019. Tom Ryan, founder of Pluto TV, was elevated to president and CEO of ViacomCBS Streaming a year ago.

Berlin — ITV Studios push into European drama has been boosted by pre-sales on “Romulus” and a slew of deals across a burgeoning slate of non-English language productions as ITV Studios aims to position as a world-class player in global content production.
Announced at this week’s Berlinale Series Market, the sales play off ITV Studios acquisition of stakes in European companies – such as France’s Beaubourg Stories, a label at ITV majority-owned “Profilages” producer Tetra Media Studio, and its minority stake in Italy’s high-flying Cattleya (“ZeroZeroZero”) – as well as early partnerships on single titles from fast-escalating production forces in Europe, such as Telefonica’s Movistar Plus.
Produced by Cattleya, Groenlandia and Sky, shot in archaic Latin, and reworking Rome’s creation story into ambitious high-end drama, “Romulus” has been acquired by HBO Europe and Sbs in Australia.

Take Israeli director Avi Nesher out of Israel, and he creates celluloid crap of the third order. Consider She (1982) with Sandahl Bergman. Or Doppelganger (1993) with Drew Barrymore? Or even Ritual (2002) with Jennifer Grey? If you haven’t been face-to-face with any of these features, you’re probably being rewarded for accomplishing something quite wonderful in a former life.
But drop-ship Nesher back to his native country, and he can surprise you. Turn Left at the End of the World (2004) is semi-engaging look at the plight of Indian immigrants living in the backwoods of Israel during the sixties. As for The Secrets (2007), here’s an exceptionally fine tale of an Orthodox Jewish young woman who wants to break all the rules by studying the Talmud and living her life as a lesbian. Really a must-see.
Now Nesher’s latest effort, The Matchmaker, is currently trodding down the theater aisles. No confetti is needed.

After dishing out on some of the possible contenders, here's my second entry on the race for this year's Ophir Awards. Here's an overview of some more films up for awards: Dani Menkin's Je t'aime I Love you Terminal Working with a Before Sunrise/Sunset-like template, this is a tale of two young strangers “forced” to spend a short time with one another. Danny Niv (Aka "Mooki") is a well known Israeli rapper, who moonlights as an actor (he had a small part in the 2002's Broken Wings) and despite his good turn here, he is juxtaposed to a female character that is closer to Sally Hawkins's character in Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky than Julie Delpy in Linklater's classic, thus makes this fall into a mouldy sitcom territory. Menkin is best known for his doc film 39 Pounds of Love, but this attempt into the fiction film realm (see trailer) won't gain any traction among voters.

The Wanderer is Avishai Sivan's debut feature film. A film school graduate in 2001, his only film to date was a barely noticed documentary film. This tells the story of Isaac, a young yeshiva student, an only child to born-again orthodox parents. Trapped in a dysfunctional family and a failing body, Isaac finds refuge in wandering. Tormented by his newfound infertility, Isaac looks for answers in his father’s dubious past. Wandering through the backstreets of the city, he seeks deliverance. - Israeli Film Scene: Local After Phobidilia sadly evaporated from local theaters, there isn't much to look as Keren Yedaya's Jaffa (which we mentioned in last month's report) has been push from its slated April release date to a mid-May launch - ironically warm responses from audiences in premiere screenings and an Oscar nomination has pushed the distributors to push the release date back. Israeli Film Scene: Local After Phobidilia sadly evaporated from local theaters, there isn't much to look as Keren Yedaya's Jaffa (which we mentioned in last month's report) has been push from its slated April release date to a mid-May launch - ironically warm responses from audiences in premiere screenings and an Oscar nomination has pushed the distributors to push the release date back. For the most part, the Israeli movie industry has always relied on scripts written directly for the screen, but this year, it seems that the tables have turned, and most of the Israeli movies of 2010 are adaptations of novels. In last month's report, you could read about the new projects of Eran Ricklis, Nir Bergman and Ari Folman, all of them adaptations from previously released books. There was a void of film adaptation material in the past as they the films didn't live up to the expectations,...

2008 will always be known as an historic year — for the passing of gay marriage laws in two states (and the tragic reduction of those rights in four), for the election of the nation’s first president of color, and for the downturn of the economy.
Years from now, when we talk about 2008, it’s likely that we’ll be discussing these events, rather than any specific lesbian film that came out.
But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a banner year for lesbian cinema.
While there were still extremely few mainstream movies with notable lesbian/bi characters, the overall quality of representation was decidedly — and dramatically — on the rise.
2008 saw an encouraging dearth of murderous, victimized or man-hating lesbian characters in any level of production (from smaller indie flicks to big-budget movies).
Women of color were better represented than in many years past, gross stereotypes were avoided, and new talents emerged.

Ania Bukstein And Michal Shtamler In Director Avi Nesher'S The Secrets. Courtesy Monterey Media. Avi Nesher seems to have had two careers as a filmmaker rather than just one. Nesher's dual identity partly stems from the fact that the Israeli writer-director spent most of his childhood and teenage years in New York and only returned to the country of his birth after attending Columbia University. Once back, Nesher wasted little time in establishing himself as one of the brightest young figures in Israeli cinema with hits like The Troupe and Dizengoff 99 (both 1979). In 1985, Rage and Glory, Nesher's film about the 1940s Israeli terrorist group the Stern Gang, caused massive controversy and the level of hysteria prompted him to leave for...
