"Tunnel" begins with Yemana checking out the racing forms, irresistibly drawn to the prospect called 'Pick Me Nick.' Harris continues to search for an apartment, but would prefer not to bunk with the irritating Dietrich, whose offer is made in case 'push comes to shove' ("it might!"). Jay Gerber (second of four) plays history teacher Howard Gabriel, who was standing on the edge of the roof listening to the jeers from his students below, all urging him to jump. In describing those 'rotten kids,' he reveals how much he hates WELCOME BACK KOTTER! Leonard Stone (second of five) plays vice principal Burton Shaw, who would rather have Gabriel back in class in the morning, rather than face the little monsters himself teaching the Spanish Inquisition. Wojo gets buried alive while chasing Leroy Kreutzer (J. J. Barry, second of seven) through his escape tunnel, and for three minutes is presumed dead. Kreutzer complains that the tunnel wasn't built for a 'big hot dog' with Joan Crawford's shoulders, 'The Hulk' compared to little Levitt. Wojo soon returns to the squad room, while everyone ponders about what it might feel like to die. Dietrich's belief that there's no single super being that plans everything for us is easily refuted by Yemana, whose selection of 'Pick Me Nick' netted him "400 bucks...I guess that settles that!"
