- TriviaShabushabu really is a Japanese dish, but it is a popular type of hotpot that doesn't contain any of the compost-like ingredients Yemana put in, or require hours of simmering and stirring. It's prepared at table just before and while eating, usually with choice cuts of steak sliced so thinly they cook in a matter of seconds. It's also pleasantly fragrant, rather than odoriferous. On the other hand, Yemana's particular take on it could be an extension of his infamous coffee disasters.
- GoofsWhen Vitella sets the fire in the Men's room, Wojo has to go and retrieve a fire extinguisher from another location, which allows the fire to increase in intensity. In previous and subsequent episodes, a fire extinguisher is mounted on the wall opposite the men's room. It's missing in this one.

Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich: Reports of her death have been greatly exaggerated.
Capt. Barney Miller: [Smiling in recognition] Mark Twain.
Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich: Yeah.

Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich: But it's in public domain now.
Featured review
"Fire '77" finds Yemana earnestly stirring a Japanese delicacy called shabu shabu, which stinks up the precinct the longer it simmers. When Wojo indicates that it smells like garbage, Nick lists the ingredients- fish heads, cabbage leaves, cucumber rinds, and celery tops (Yemana: "come to think of it, that is garbage!"). Howard Platt (second of five) and K Callan play two suicide cases that failed to carry out their double act, she by jumping, he by revolver (Dietrich: "reports of her death have been greatly exaggerated!"). Sal Viscuso (second of four) plays Thomas Vitella, arrested for trying to steal from a church plate. An escapee from Rikers Island, he has no intention of going back, igniting a fire in the mens room that Barney initially mistakes for Yemana's lunch. The aftermath finds no one injured except perhaps Fish's pride, having to conduct himself in the restroom without a door. Dietrich casually deadpans, in his usual distinctive style: "hi Fish, been quite a day hasn't it?" Barney is the first to taste Nick's lunch, amazed that it tastes 'pretty good.' Yemana is less enamored ("my God, I wonder what went wrong?").
