Scott Pilgrim, the comic book character created by artist Bryan Lee O’Malley back in 2004, has earned himself quite a bit of fan following over the years through his titular comic book series. And since the character only got more and more popular among audiences, he found his saga getting adapted into motion picture projects as well, including an animated and a live-action one.

While the live-action film came first and managed to leave a lot of fans reeling from all the baffling twists and turns, its anime version was met with a solid response from fans and viewers too – well, at least a considerable chunk of them. But Netflix isn’t down to revive the famed action/rom-com saga for a second season, and somehow, a majority of the fans are okay with it.

Exactly one year after Scott Pilgrim Takes Off debuted on Netflix, co-developer/executive producer Bryan Lee O’Malley, on whose graphic novels the show was based, revealed to fans that the anime adventure series is done.
“We were recently informed that the show will Not return,” he wrote on X. “As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.”
O’Malley and fellow series co-developer/executive producer BenDavid Grabinski have been preparing fans for the outcome since the eight-episode first season of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was released last November.
“It’s self-contained for now. We loved what we did. We put it all in there. We don’t have any ideas lying on the floor. We pretty much put them all in,...

Anna Kendrick Recalls Director’s ‘Icky’ Improv Request on Set: It Was a ‘Power Move to Embarrass Me’
Anna Kendrick is detailing an “icky” on-set experience with an unnamed director.
Kendrick said during Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in the below video that a filmmaker encouraged her to improvise during a production, only to then publicly “embarrass” her by suggesting she just stick to the script after all.
“I remember a director once in a room full of 100 extras or something being like, ‘Hey, on this next one just try something. Just make something up. Just improv something,’” Kenrick said. “And I did it and then the director called cut and came over and, once again in front of 100 extras, was like, ‘Oof, let’s go back to the script!’ It really felt like a very specific power move thing to embarrass me, to gain dominance. It was very icky.”
Yet Kendrick’s improv, though, ended up making it into the trailer for the film.

Anna Kendrick recently turned director with the Netflix drama Woman of the Hour. Following the story of real-life serial killer Rodney Alcala and his 1978 appearance on The Dating Game, the film received positive reviews from critics for Kendrick’s direction and the exploration of themes like systemic misogyny.
Kendrick has been vocal about her struggles in dysfunctional relationships in the past, revealing that she was in an abusive relationship for seven years at the time of Alice, Darling’s release. She recently opened up more about her experiences while in the relationship and mentioned that there were times when she was made to feel like the abuser.

Back in the 80s, Stephen King adaptations ruled the theaters. You could barely go a few months without hearing about a new film that was coming out. One that many would be surprised to find out was a King adaptation would be the testosterone-infused murder game show The Running Man. Released under King’s pseudonym, Richard Bachman, the book was hardly a hit. Once King was outed as the author, sales went through the roof. Hollywood came calling. With King being popular once again, another adaptation of the book is in the making.
What’s It About?
In the 80s adaptation, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a wrongfully convicted police officer. He gets a chance at freedom if he can survive the game show The Running Man. Of course, the game is rigged so that no one ever wins, but this time is different. They don’t know who they are messing with.

Michael Cera and Emilia Jones are lacing up their shoes for The Running Man.
Both actors have closed deals to join Glen Powell in Paramount’s adaptation of the Stephen King story that is being directed by Edgar Wright. For Cera, the move reunites him with the filmmaker behind one of his beloved roles, that of romantic slacker Scott Pilgrim from 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
Josh Brolin, Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) and Lee Pace are already on the call sheet for the feature that is due to shoot in London at the top of next year.

Anna Kendrick and I are discussing soundbite culture.
She’s winding down after a day of interviews for her directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” where she’s been navigating the tricky business of getting audiences hyped for the chilling true story about the time a serial killer was a bachelor on “The Dating Game.”
The movie, now streaming on Netflix, is a subversive take on the true crime genre. The story is not focused on the killer’s motives or his capture, but more of a meditation on all the secret ways women navigate the world to ensure their survival, which makes the movie tough to boil down into a few quippy quotes.
As we walk to Kendrick’s hotel suite, I crack a joke about someone asking her to sing while talking about serial killers and she covers her mouth to suppress a knowing laugh. Because, when doing press,...

Being in the movie industry comes with a risk of being overthrown by other actors who star in bigger projects, and there is a slight fear that Chris Evans might be wasting his potential on films that barely help him showcase what he’s capable of. Evans, who turned 43 earlier this year hasn’t had too many of his recent movies get much recognition, specifically, the ones done outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During the fall season, which has become popularly known these days as "spooky season," most of us prefer to watch horror movies and thrillers leading up to Halloween. Thankfully, Netflix has plenty of horror movie titles streaming right now or coming soon that you will want to add to your watch list.
But if jump scares and gore aren't quite your cup of tea, the best new Netflix original thriller movie was released on Oct. 18. Woman of the Hour comes from Academy Award nominated actress Anna Kendrick, who makes her directorial debut with the film that's based on a chilling true story.
Here's a little bit more about the movie's plot via Netflix:
The stranger-than-fiction story of an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles and a serial killer in the midst of a yearslong murder spree, whose lives intersect when they’re cast on an episode of The Dating Game.

Ah, October. The magical time of year when even the most horror-averse moviegoers pop open their watchlist in search of some new scary thing to watch. And while "Terrifier 3" will certainly be the highest-grossing horror film of October, the early contender for October's best new scary movie is "V/H/S/Beyond," the latest entry in the "V/H/S" series. With the introduction of a cohesive central theme — and a handful of emerging horror directors giving each segment their all — "V/H/S/Beyond" has restored the franchise to its former glory and reminded us why horror anthologies can be such a fun way to tell a story.
But if "V/H/S/Beyond" represents a resurgence for the cinematic horror anthology, it's not the only one. This has been a banner year for horror anthologies across all mediums, with new collections and series dominating the shelves of your local comic and book stores. In fact, let's make a...

Many comic book characters have been brought to the big screen over the years, but there are only so many actors willing to fill those roles.
That's why a few Hollywood stars have ended up playing multiple parts across the Marvel and DC Universes, with at least some of them using the second characters they've played to turn their careers around after those disastrous first attempts.
For example, Ryan Reynolds almost killed his career by playing Green Lantern in the 2011 flop; however, he'd more than made up for that with his role in the Deadpool franchise, with this year's Deadpool & Wolverine now the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all time.
Today, we're looking at 8 actors who have played comic book characters in poorly received superhero movies, only to later redeem themselves with far more successful performances in movies and TV show that didn't flop with fans, critics, and at the box office.

For example, Ryan Reynolds almost killed his career by playing Green Lantern in the 2011 flop; however, he'd more than made up for that with his role in the Deadpool franchise, with this year's Deadpool & Wolverine now the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all time.

Chris Evans’s journey in the MCU as Captain America was nothing short of epic. He started with a stand-alone film and went on to become one of the franchise’s most pivotal characters, ultimately retiring in Endgame after choosing to live out his days with Peggy in the past. Regardless of what Evans does in the future, Captain America will always be one of his most iconic roles.
Meanwhile, Josh Brolin has also had an extensive career in comic book movies, with Thanos being his most notable role, although far from his only one. Unlike Evans, whose transition into the world of comic books was expected, Brolin, known for his more serious and complex roles, brought an unexpected and valuable presence to the superhero genre.
So, while it’s clear that both Evans and Brolin have portrayed a fair share of comic book characters, the question remains: who has played more?...

Chris Evans’s MCU journey as Captain America, who made his film debut in a stand-alone film and went on to become one of the MCU’s most significant characters until retiring in Endgame and choosing to stay with Peggy in the past, was an epic one and whatever Evans does, Captain America will remain with him as one of his most popular roles of all time.
At the same time, Josh Brolin also has a very rich comic book movie career, with Thanos being the most significant comic book role he’s played, although it is not the only one. While Evans’ inclusion in the world of comic books is not surprising, Josh Brolin generally plays more serious and/or complex roles, which is why his presence in this world was both surprising and beneficial for the world of superhero comics.

While Chris Evan’s career was mostly dictated by Captain America in the last decade, playing a brave man, who is a symbol of truth and justice, isn’t exactly his cup of tea. Before landing the part of Steve Rogers, Evans mostly took gigs of characters who were a far cry from his virtuous Marvel counterpart.

Moreover, after parting ways with the MCU in 2019, the actor was back to playing such smug characters again, especially in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. David Yates, who helmed Evans’ Pain Hustlers, later touched on the actor’s tendency to play such morally questionable characters, which doesn’t resemble Evans in the slightest.

This is the one where things become both more and less complicated. On balance, probably less overall, by the end, which is unusual for the mid-point of a series.
For any Gen Z readers coming to Scott Pilgrim for the first time: this is a six-book graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, in a manga-inspired format and video game-inspired world, about a twenty-something slacker from Toronto and his friends, mostly about how he meets a new girlfriend and has to defeat her seven evil exes, but also partly about his band and some related stuff. The six books all came out in the back half of the Aughts, so I guess they’re core Millennial culture, if you want to generation-type them, but Scott himself is such a stereotypical slacker that this Gen X guy found him and his world instantly recognizable.

Producer Eric Gitter has spent many years bringing comic books and graphic novels to the screen, working on movies such as Extraction, Atomic Blonde and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Now he’s diving deeper into the genre as the co-founder of a new comic book and graphic novel publisher, teaming up with several independent publishing veterans in the process.
Joining Gitter in the new venture are former Boom! Studios topper Filip Sablik as publisher, former Idw head Jamie S. Rich as editor-in-chief, and comics creator Jeremy Haun as creative director.
The untitled company will eschew superheroes and lean toward horror, science fiction, crime and fantasy. The company did not disclose funding nor did it unveil a slate, although it hopes to lock up creators by the end of the year or early next. Its goal is to begin putting out books sometime in 2025.

Remember the halcyon days of 2010? The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in its infancy, but much was already being made of any superhero movie that felt even slightly different from the future juggernaut's quippy origin stories. Future DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn's name was already in the middle of conversations about superhero ethics thanks to his new film "Super," while fans of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" comics were still debating the merits and myriad drawbacks of Zack Snyder's big-screen adaptation. From "The Spirit" to "Hancock," recent alternative superhero stories were actively dividing audiences who had yet to lay eyes on a single "Avengers" film.
Then "Kick-Ass" showed up. The R-rated action-comedy featured a scrappy teen hero, a little girl who loved to beat the s**t out of people, a fittingly odd Nicolas Cage performance, and the unofficially cinematic mascot of the late aughts, "Superbad" breakout star Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

It’s not unusual for comedians like Mike Birbiglia, Colin Quinn or Alex Edelman to bring shows to Broadway, says New York Theatre Guide. So when the news came out today that comic Bill Burr was headed to Broadway as well, it wasn’t that shocking — until you learn that Burr won’t be doing stand-up at all. Instead, the guy whose most famous acting credit is The Mandalorian is taking on David Mamet.
Burr is joining Bob Odenkirk and Kieran Culkin in a revival of Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Glengarry Glenn Ross, set to open in the spring of 2025. While Odenkirk (Mr. Show) and Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) also come from comedy backgrounds, their serious acting chops are well established, with nine Emmy nominations for dramatic acting between them. Culkin also has a Broadway notch on his belt, appearing in 2014’s This is Our Youth.

After starring as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four and before stealing our hearts as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Evans played a role in yet another film adapted from comic books – Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. However, instead of his usual hero roles, the actor played one of the seven villains in the film – Lucas Lee.

Jeopardy! fans are sounding off over one of the clues from the July 3rd game, as host Ken Jennings ruled against one player’s initial answer. The match which saw one-day champion Kelly Proulx take on Sarasota-based attorney Dana Keane and Burbank-based customer support team lead Isaac Hirsch, raised eyebrows with the $800 clue in the category “Don’t Go, Jason.” The clue read, “Playing the evil Gideon in this Edgar Wright flick, Jason Schwartzman gets his head kicked in; K-o, Cera Cera.” The correct response was Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but Isaac’s initial answer of Scott Pilgrim was seemingly not accepted, leading him to extend the response, saying, “What is Scott Pilgrim…. vs. The Universe?” Ken Jennings for Jeopardy! and Michael Cera in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World “Sorry, no,” Jennings responded before Kelly buzzed in with the right answer. On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: A Star-Studded Cult Comedy That Doesn’t Fit in Any Bollywood Box
The year was 2000. The place: A local South Asian grocery store in suburban Michigan. The occasion: Friday night, baby, the night for browsing the store’s DVD library for a rental, and my father’s pick for the week — “Andaz Apna Apna.”
I don’t think Rajkumar Santoshi’s seminal comedy was made with a nine-year-old American girl in mind, but I ate the film up. It’s not overtly childish or adult, but boasts the kind...

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. This year’s invited class is no exception.
If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934. And with the addition of the 2024 members, 35 percent of Academy members identify as women, 20 percent of Academy members are from underrepresented ethnic and racial communities, and 20 percent of Academy members are from countries or territories outside the U.S.
As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...
