Scott Pilgrim, the comic book character created by artist Bryan Lee O’Malley back in 2004, has earned himself quite a bit of fan following over the years through his titular comic book series. And since the character only got more and more popular among audiences, he found his saga getting adapted into motion picture projects as well, including an animated and a live-action one.

While the live-action film came first and managed to leave a lot of fans reeling from all the baffling twists and turns, its anime version was met with a solid response from fans and viewers too – well, at least a considerable chunk of them. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off Officially Ends Its Run After One Season on Netflix...

Exactly one year after Scott Pilgrim Takes Off debuted on Netflix, co-developer/executive producer Bryan Lee O’Malley, on whose graphic novels the show was based, revealed to fans that the anime adventure series is done.

“We were recently informed that the show will Not return,” he wrote on X. “As you know, we only intended one season, and called in a lot of favors to make it happen, so making more would have been nearly impossible. Still, I know some of you have been holding out hope.”

O’Malley and fellow series co-developer/executive producer BenDavid Grabinski have been preparing fans for the outcome since the eight-episode first season of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was released last November.

Anna Kendrick is detailing an “icky” on-set experience with an unnamed director.

Kendrick said during Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast in the below video that a filmmaker encouraged her to improvise during a production, only to then publicly “embarrass” her by suggesting she just stick to the script after all.

“I remember a director once in a room full of 100 extras or something being like, ‘Hey, on this next one just try something. Just make something up. Just improv something,’” Kenrick said. “And I did it and then the director called cut and came over and, once again in front of 100 extras, was like, ‘Oof, let’s go back to the script!’ It really felt like a very specific power move thing to embarrass me, to gain dominance. It was very icky.”

Back in the 80s, Stephen King adaptations ruled the theaters. You could barely go a few months without hearing about a new film that was coming out. One that many would be surprised to find out was a King adaptation would be the testosterone-infused murder game show The Running Man. Released under King’s pseudonym, Richard Bachman, the book was hardly a hit. Once King was outed as the author, sales went through the roof. Hollywood came calling. With King being popular once again, another adaptation of the book is in the making.

What’s It About?

In the 80s adaptation, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as a wrongfully convicted police officer. He gets a chance at freedom if he can survive the game show The Running Man. Of course, the game is rigged so that no one ever wins, but this time is different. They don’t know who they are messing with.

Both actors have closed deals to join Glen Powell in Paramount’s adaptation of the Stephen King story that is being directed by Edgar Wright. Gkids will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Los Angeles-based Toho International. Founder Eric Beckman will remain as CEO of Gkids, and Dave Jesteadt will remain as president.

Back in late September 2024, 20th Century Studios announced that it would be remaking the 1992 thriller classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle with Longlegs actress Maika Monroe leading the cast. Now in theaters, “Megalopolis” is a modern retelling of the Roman Empire, starring Adam Driver as the man who’s trying to build it. Many comic book characters have been brought to the big screen over the years, but there are only so many actors willing to fill those roles.

That's why a few Hollywood stars have ended up playing multiple parts across the Marvel and DC Universes, with at least some of them using the second characters they've played to turn their careers around after those disastrous first attempts. 

For example, Ryan Reynolds almost killed his career by playing Green Lantern in the 2011 flop; however, he'd more than made up for that with his role in the Deadpool franchise, with this year's Deadpool & Wolverine now the highest-grossing R-Rated movie of all time.

Today, we're looking at 8 actors who have played comic book characters in poorly received superhero movies, only to later redeem themselves with far more successful performances in movies and TV show that didn't flop with fans, critics, and at the box office.

Variety has learned that Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill, Emily Mitchell, and Owen Teague are all set to star in the series. TheWrap can exclusively reveal that Emily Hampshire is joining “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice,” the high-concept action movie from writer/director BenDavid Grabinski.

She will star alongside the already-announced Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza González, Jimmy Tatro and Keith David.

The movie is a buddy action-comedy set in the criminal underworld; Hampshire will play a crooked cop.

The actress is perhaps best known from her work on “Schitt’s Creek,” the critically acclaimed comedy that ran for 80 episodes between 2015 and 2020. Hampshire has also appeared in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and, earlier this year, “Humane” for David’s daughter Caitlin Cronenberg. She also starred in the “12 Monkeys” television series and the British supernatural series “The Rig” for Prime Video.

Principal photography on “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice” started in Winnipeg earlier this month. The movie is produced by Andrew Lazar for 20th Century Studios, with Larry Fong serving as cinematographer.

Chris Evans’s journey in the MCU as Captain America was nothing short of epic. He started with a stand-alone film and went on to become one of the franchise’s most pivotal characters, ultimately retiring in Endgame after choosing to live out his days with Peggy in the past. Regardless of what Evans does in the future, Captain America will always be one of his most iconic roles.

Meanwhile, Josh Brolin has also had an extensive career in comic book movies, with Thanos being his most notable role, although far from his only one. Unlike Evans, whose transition into the world of comic books was expected, Brolin, known for his more serious and complex roles, brought an unexpected and valuable presence to the superhero genre.

So, while it’s clear that both Evans and Brolin have portrayed a fair share of comic book characters, the question remains: who has played more?...

Chris Evans’s MCU journey as Captain America, who made his film debut in a stand-alone film and went on to become one of the MCU’s most significant characters until retiring in Endgame and choosing to stay with Peggy in the past, was an epic one and whatever Evans does, Captain America will remain with him as one of his most popular roles of all time.

At the same time, Josh Brolin also has a very rich comic book movie career, with Thanos being the most significant comic book role he’s played, although it is not the only one. While Evans’ inclusion in the world of comic books is not surprising, Josh Brolin generally plays more serious and/or complex roles, which is why his presence in this world was both surprising and beneficial for the world of superhero comics.

Aubrey Plaza has made a name in the industry for playing unconventional and bizarre characters. She gained widespread appreciation for her role as the quirky April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation. Anyone watching the show for the first time would think that Plaza made April her whole personality. But, it is the other way around as the character was entirely designed for her.

Before landing the part of Steve Rogers, Evans mostly took gigs of characters who were a far cry from his virtuous Marvel counterpart.

Moreover, after parting ways with the MCU in 2019, the actor was back to playing such smug characters again, especially in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out. David Yates, who helmed Evans’ Pain Hustlers, later touched on the actor’s tendency to play such morally questionable characters, which doesn’t resemble Evans in the slightest.

Joining Gitter in the new venture are former Boom! Studios topper Filip Sablik as publisher, former Idw head Jamie S. Rich as editor-in-chief, and comics creator Jeremy Haun as creative director.

The untitled company will eschew superheroes and lean toward horror, science fiction, crime and fantasy. The company did not disclose funding nor did it unveil a slate, although it hopes to lock up creators by the end of the year or early next. Its goal is to begin putting out books sometime in 2025.

Exclusive: Higher Ground, the production company of President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, has appointed Anikah McLaren to serve as Head of Film, Deadline can exclusively reveal.

McLaren joins from the recently shuttered Participant, where she spent a little over five years as Executive Vice President of Narrative Film, co-running the department as a key member of the leadership team. In her new role, she will lead Higher Ground’s scripted film division, reporting to President Vinnie Malhotra.

McLaren joins a team that also includes Jessie Dicovitsky, who is Head of Television, and Ethan Lewis, who oversees Higher Ground’s unscripted and non-fiction content. She’ll be based out of Los Angeles and will have VP of Film Mark Wright reporting to her.

Remember the halcyon days of 2010? The Marvel Cinematic Universe was still in its infancy, but much was already being made of any superhero movie that felt even slightly different from the future juggernaut's quippy origin stories. Future DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn's name was already in the middle of conversations about superhero ethics thanks to his new film "Super," while fans of Alan Moore's "Watchmen" comics were still debating the merits and myriad drawbacks of Zack Snyder's big-screen adaptation. From "The Spirit" to "Hancock," recent alternative superhero stories were actively dividing audiences who had yet to lay eyes on a single "Avengers" film.

Then "Kick-Ass" showed up. The R-rated action-comedy featured a scrappy teen hero, a little girl who loved to beat the s**t out of people, a fittingly odd Nicolas Cage performance, and the unofficially cinematic mascot of the late aughts, "Superbad" breakout star Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

It’s not unusual for comedians like Mike Birbiglia, Colin Quinn or Alex Edelman to bring shows to Broadway, says New York Theatre Guide. So when the news came out today that comic Bill Burr was headed to Broadway as well, it wasn’t that shocking — until you learn that Burr won’t be doing stand-up at all. Instead, the guy whose most famous acting credit is The Mandalorian is taking on David Mamet.

Burr is joining Bob Odenkirk and Kieran Culkin in a revival of Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Glengarry Glenn Ross, set to open in the spring of 2025. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll is reeling fans in with its latest original series, “Negative Positive Angler.” Set to debut this October, the emotionally complex sports drama hails from acclaimed studio Nut Animation and director Yutaka Uemura.

Blending the conventions of fishing and tear-jerking drama, “Negative Positive Angler” follows college student Tsunehiro Sasaki as he finds purpose through an unlikely hobby. Burdened with debt and a bleak medical diagnosis, Sasaki is rescued from debt collectors by eccentric fishermen Hana Ayukawa and Takaaki Tsutsujimori. The eccentrics introduce Sasaki to the meditative sport, which becomes an outlet for his depression.

Helming the project is Uemura, known for fantasy series like “Saga of Tanya the Evil” and sci-fi thriller “Deca-Dence.” He aims to infuse the sports anime genre, often seen as lighthearted, with gravitas. “This story depicts how fishing transcends trivial recreation and becomes a lifeline in times of darkness,” said Uemura.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. Since #OscarsSoWhite back in 2015, the Academy has moved away from its elitist tendencies and toward embracing younger and more diverse artists and executives from all over the world. If the invitees all accept Academy membership, the total members will number 10,910 and voting members 9,934.
