Iconic actor Tony Todd has died at the age of 69, it has been confirmed. As reported by THR, the Candyman, Platoon, and Star Trek: The Next Generation star, who amassed in excess of 250 professional credits over the course of an astonishing, five decade spanning career, passed away on 6 November at his home in Los Angeles after a long battle with illness.
Anthony Tiran Todd was born in Washington D.C. on 4 December, 1954 to Evetta Lyons Gaither. At the age of just three a young Tony Todd moved to Hartford, Connecticut where his auntie, Clara Elliston, took custody of him and nurtured his adolescent curiosity with the arts. Having enrolled Todd in summer acting courses as a boy, Elliston supported her nephew — artistically, financially, and emotionally — as his interest in theatre led to spells at both Eugene O’Neill National Actors Theatre Institute in Connecticut and Trinity Repertory Company in Rhode Island.

Candyman star Tony Todd, who died Wednesday after a long illness, is being remembered by his co-star Virginia Madsen.
The Oscar nominee, who played graduate student Helen Lyle who’s stalked by Todd’s titular hook-handed killer while investigating urban legends at a Chicago housing project in the 1992 horror film, paid tribute to Todd with a series of posts on Instagram.
Madsen initially shared a brief video post after she heard the news of Todd’s death, in which she said she didn’t “know what to say” but called Todd her “beloved.”
“May you rest in power sweet to the sweet in heaven,” Madsen wrote in the caption alongside a video. “The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life. More later but I can’t right now. I love you.”

I have very sad news to report tonight. It has been announced that Tony Todd has died at the age of 69. The legendary actor is best known for his roles in Candyman, Final Destination, Platoon, The Crow, Night of the Living Dead, and his many appearances in the Star Trek franchise. He was a massively talented actor whose incredible baritone voice made every project so much better. This is a huge blow.
Todd’s wife, Fatima, told THR that he died on Wednesday at his home in Marina del Rey after a long illness. New Line Cinema, the studio which produces the Final Destination franchise, wrote on Instagram: “The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony, -Your Final Destination Family.“

All of us here at Bloody Disgusting are devastated to learn that horror icon Tony Todd, the legendary actor who played the title character in Candyman (1992) and its sequels, passed away on November 6 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 69. Deadline first reported the news.
The prolific actor amassed more than 240 film and TV credits spanning his four decade career. While the actor’s big break came when he was cast in Oliver Stone’s 1986 Vietnam War epic Platoon, he would secure his name in the genre pantheon just a few short years later.
Todd starred in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead as Ben, the role played by Duane Jones in George A. Romero’s iconic 1968 original. Todd’s warm, commanding performance was one of the primary reasons this remake was so successful and it was a precursor to his turn as Candyman. Despite...

Hulu’s adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere premiered at the very beginning of the 2020 Covid lockdown, and although it was nominated for several big Emmys that fall, the miniseries has become very fuzzy in my memory. One thing I do remember, however, is that in selecting the daughters of Reese Witherspoon’s character, the casting team found a pair of young actresses — Jade Pettyjohn and Megan Stott — who absolutely bore an uncanny resemblance to Reese Witherspoon.
Actually, I’d forgotten even that detail before sitting down to watch the new Netflix drama Penelope and immediately recognizing Stott — in large part because, if you’re going to make what is essentially an eight-part YA version of Wild, selecting a certifiable Reese Witherspoon doppelgänger as your lead makes a lot of sense.
Presumably, it isn’t wholly a coincidence. Penelope was created by Mark Duplass, who co-stars with Witherspoon on The Morning Show,...

1937. Emily (Gwyneth Evans) is close to becoming an adult but her forthcoming eighteenth birthday won’t be much of a cause for celebration as, due to chronic agoraphobia. she has never left the rambling, crumbling gothic pile which is her home. Patrick Lussier's 2011 film "Drive Angry" might belong to a genre hereby designated "neo-grindhouse." There was a wave of films in the late 2000s and early 2010s that sought to evoke the style or the content of a very specific type of exploitation movie that was popular in the 1970s. In addition to the Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez 2007 twofer "Grindhouse" and its spinoffs, films like "Redline," "The Man with the Iron Fists," "Turbo Kid," "Kung Fury," "Hatchet," "Torque," "Deathgasm," "House of the Devil," and "The Love Witch" popped up on the regular.
"Drive Angry" gleefully embraced its goofy, action/horror premise with aplomb. A dead race car driver named (sigh) John Milton (Nicolas Cage) escapes the clutches of Hell having stolen Satan's persona gun, a device called the Godkiller. On his tail is Satan's Accountant (William Fichtner), assigned with nabbing John and dragging him back to Hell. John,...

Twitch is the biggest livestreaming platform in the world. But while it’s the gathering place for some of the world’s biggest creators and their millions of fans, it’s not profitable–and right now, employees are worried owner Amazon will let it become a “zombie brand,” abandoned without resources for future development (and with more rounds of potential layoffs chipping away at its staff).
We know all this because of internal documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, but now, new information is giving us more context about why Amazon executives might be taking a dismal view of Twitch.
Data from both Stream Hatchet and Streams Charts shows Twitch losing significant market share in Q2 2024 to competitors like Kick and YouTube–and we think Twitch’s update policy on simulcasting might have something to do with it.

“It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”
Hatchet‘s festival tagline — a quote from a major studio’s rejection of the film — served as a rally cry for horror fans. Despite its roots planted firmly in practical effects-driven ’80s slashers a la Friday the 13th, Hatchet felt fresh and exciting when it arrived in 2006; a gory but lighthearted reprieve from torturous studio horror littered with janky CGI and cheap scares.
Willed into existence by writer-director Adam Green based on a character he conceived as an 8-year-old summer camper, the Hatchet franchise centers on Victor Crowley — the hulking, vengeful spirit of a deformed boy that haunts the swamps of New Orleans. Kane Hodder brings a similar physicality to the role as he did to Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Parts VII-x, but Crowley is more ferocious. The casting...

Urban Legends and camp-fires are the perfect way to start a horror film. Point to an old abandoned house and say that a crazy old man still lives there, you must not shout his name or he’ll come and get you. Perfect start to a slasher right? This is the basic plot for Madman, an early 80s genre flick which has had the Arrow Video Blu-ray treatment.
When a group of camp counsellors are telling scary stories around a campfire, they are warned not to say the name of Madman Marz, a crazy old farmer who is still said to haunt the woods around his abandoned home, conveniently close to the camp.

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.

Little People Big World celeb Zach Roloff is ditching Amy Roloff and Matt Roloff’s fundraiser, according to spoilers. Is this another petty shot at Matt from a bitter Zach over the botched Roloff Farms deal? What else do spoilers say?
Little People Big World: Zach Roloff And Matt Roloff Haven’t Buried The Hatchet Completely
In current Little People Big World Season 25 scenes, Matt Roloff and Zach Roloff are still not in a good place following the botched Roloff Farms deal. Zach took things personally enough that he moved his family more than an hour away to Battle Ground, Washington.
Zach Roloff and Tori Roloff even dropped the bombshell that they were leaving Little People Big World after 25 seasons. In addition to doing their own thing with their new podcast, their leaving the show is one less tether they’ll have to Matt Roloff moving forward.

Danielle Harris is an absolute legend in the horror space, having been a part of the genre for nearly 40 years. She always stuck out as a child actor in films such as Halloween 4 and The Last Boy Scout. But she continued that success into her adulthood with films like Hatchet and the Rob Zombie Halloween films. I was lucky enough to talk with Danielle about her latest horror film, Project Dorothy. She plays a rogue AI, so she’s just a voice here, but that’s also something she has plenty of experience with (she was Debbie on The Wild Thornberrys). While she’s a small part of the film, I was also able to talk with her about her podcast with Scout Taylor Compton and their planned trilogy of films. This was a great conversation; she gave some nice insight into the difficulties of acting in something you’re also directing.

Ok, I’ve thought about this long and hard, discussed with my local priest and therapist, and after much internal strife, I’ve decided it’s time. What you don’t hear a lot about, and good lord do they exist, are the multiple rip-offs of Gremlins. Gremlins got its own incredible sequel and then finally this year its very own animated show that is… fine… it’s fine. But with Gremlins profitability came the clones. Released in 2009 in the midst of the same neo-slasher run that produced Hatchet’s Victor Crowley and Behind the Mask’s Leslie Vernon, writer/director/special effects makeup artist Robert Hall’s Laid to Rest introduced horror fans to Chromeskull (Nick Principe), a towering slasher in a sleek suit and polished mask who carries out all manner of mayhem while chasing after a hapless group of blue collar victims across a desolate stretch of country under the cover of night. A sequel followed in 2011, continuing on from the previous film’s events and revealing that the vicious killer commands a group of subordinates who do his bidding, including Chromeskull wannabe Preston (Brian Austin Green) and the devious Spann (Danielle Harris). In that film’s closing moments, Chromeskull heads out onto the streets of Hollywood to likely carry out yet another gore-soaked killing spree.

Screambox is headed back into the swamp with Victor Crowley, as the Bloody Disgusting-powered streamer has added a trio of Hatchet sequels, all courtesy of MPI/Dark Sky Films.
The following Hatchet films are now streaming on Screambox…
Hatchet II, which was directed by Adam Green, serves up a ferocious and exceptionally gory dose of splatterific entertainment with groundbreaking make-up effects, a wildly twisted sense of humor, and an even darker and bloodier ride than the first film. In the film, Marybeth (Danielle Harris) manages to escape the clutches of the bayou-butcher Victor Crowley and returns to the swamp with an army of hunters and gunmen, determined to end Crowley’s reign of horror forever.
In Hatchet III, directed this time by Bj McDonnell, the murderous slasher Victor Crowley takes on an entire police department, paramedic team, and heavily armed S.W.A.T. unit, forcing Marybeth and the troops into an epic showdown.

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

By the start of the 2000s, there were so many slasher films out there that it was difficult to figure which ones were worth the time and which were not, something that hasn’t changed much since then. However, the mid-2000s saw a few fun surprise slasher films make their way onto screens including films like Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon and today’s film of interest, Hatchet (watch it Here). Coming from a writer-director who knows the genre and has tremendous respect for it, Hatchet was one of those films most of the public didn’t see coming, one that was a bit out of left field if you didn’t pay attention...

Kane Hodder is Jason Voorhees.
The famed stuntman played the hockey-masked slasher from "Friday VII" -- "Jason X," as well as the characterization in the "Friday the 13th" video game. Hodder elevated Jason to a veritable horror icon, which is why it was a devastating shock when Hodder wasn't cast in "Freddy vs Jason." Hodder spoke at length about the situation during the 2017 documentary "To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story," chronicling his career up until that point. Hodder had just finished "Jason X" when he was approached by someone at New Line Cinema for a lunch meeting, where he was given the script for "Freddy vs Jason" and informed that the movie was finally happening.
"I assumed at that time that meant I was doing the movie," he said. "You're giving me the script and saying 'We're finally doing this movie,' ... pretty sure thing in my mind.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the horror-comedy sitcom “Holliston,” which aired for two seasons on the now-defunct FEARnet in 2012 and 2013.
Adam Green and Joe Lynch are two filmmakers and genuine horror fans who have given their fellow horror fans so much over the years, including some great movies like Mayhem, the Hatchet franchise, and Frozen, as well as the upcoming Suitable Flesh. Among their many contributions to the genre was their horror sitcom, “Holliston.”
The best way to describe the series for the uninitiated would be if “Spaced” had a head on collision with “Friends” and was re-attached into a weird, funny monster. Originally premiering as the first original series on the now defunct FEARnet in 2012, “Holliston” is set in the small town of Holliston, Massachusetts, and stars Adam Green as “Adam” and Joe Lynch as “Joe.” Both stars play fictional versions of themselves that are best friends and roommates.

Robert Englund’s most famous role as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise only scratches the surface of his prolific career. With over 150 credits in film and television and counting, the actor remains a heavyweight in the horror space. That includes cameo appearances, where Englund’s history and experience bring welcome depth to each part, no matter how fleeting.

After Puppet Master, Subspecies is undoubtedly Full Moon’s most successful franchise. The two are similar in that they both have an intricate central mythology that is expanded upon over time, and while both have their share of quirky humor, the films are much more serious in tone than other notable Full Moon franchises like Gingerdead Man or Evil Bong. The two series, however, also have their share of stark differences. For one thing, the Puppet Master series has spawned 15 films to date: 13 official entries from the home studio, plus a crossover by the Sci-Fi Channel and a remake. They also play it fast and loose in terms of continuity. Many different screenwriters have come and gone, adding to and contradicting the established mythology—sometimes in equal doses.
Subspecies, meanwhile, is only just now seeing the release of its fifth entry after a twenty-five year gap since the last sequel,...

Netflix is facing a $1 million defamation lawsuit for using a Kentucky man’s Instagram photo in its “Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” documentary.
Taylor Hazlewood, a respiratory therapist in a neonatal ICU, alleged in a lawsuit filed in Dallas County, Texas on April 10 that Netflix used an Instagram photo of him without his consent in the doc. Released in January, “The Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” details Caleb “Kai” McGillvary’s rise to internet fame after defending a woman from an attack with his hatchet while hitchhiking, and his subsequent fall after he was convicted of murdering New Jersey attorney Joseph Galfy.
According to the suit, obtained by Variety, photos of Hazlewood holding a hatchet were allegedly “extracted from his personal Instagram page without his permission, are placed with audio stating ‘stone-cold killer,’ with text captions stating that ‘you can never trust anyone,’ and with pictures of Caleb Lawrence McGillvary.”
The filing states that...

Kentucky resident Taylor Hazelwood is suing Netflix for $1 million for the streamer’s use of his Instagram photo in the “Hatchet Wielding Hitchhiker” true-crime documentary film.
Hazelwood filed the complaint in Texas, accusing Netflix of defamation and misappropriation of likeness or right of publicity after a photo he posted to Instagram was used in the documentary, which centers on Caleb “Kai” McGillvary, a wandering man who intervened during a woman’s assault on the side of the highway. Video of the incident then went viral and made him famous. McGillvary was later convicted of murder of Joseph Galfy.
According to the lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap, the film — which was released Jan. 12, 2023 — “inappropriately used Hazelwood’s photograph and depicts him in a sinister light.”

Survival horror Fall (which is now on Netflix UK) sees two extreme sports enthusiasts climb up a 2000 foot tower in the middle of the desert and get stuck at the top. It’s high-concept in every sense as the two women teeter on a tiny ledge impossibly high up while the audience feel (pleasantly?) sick and anxious the whole time.
Fall is effective and efficient. The girls are likeable, capable and make good choices (other than climbing up a 2000 foot tower in the first place…). There’s real peril, enough back story to round the characters out, but ultimately it’s girls vs tower, with some pesky buzzards thrown in for good measure. This kind of survival horror – and by that in this instance we mean a film where characters are pitted against nature or a circumstance, rather than a person, or a supernatural entity – works viscerally when it’s done well.

The third installment in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, is now available to stream on Screambox. The sequel was initially released in 1990 and marked the first entry in the franchise distributed by New Line Cinema in an attempt to turn it into a new series that harkened back to the original’s gritty horror roots.
Considering the events of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, that also meant introducing a new cannibalistic clan to accompany the iconic Leatherface in the sequel. Leatherface follows a couple from California who run afoul of the Sawyer clan after a bizarre run-in with a hitchhiker at a Texas gas station. That hitchhiker, Tex, is played by The Lord of the Rings trilogy star and frequent David Cronenberg collaborator Viggo Mortensen. Mind you, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III isn’t Mortensen’s first horror role – that distinction belongs to 1987’s...

As the United States continues to be battered with winter storms, this seemed like a good time to revisit a horror film with a wintry setting for the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series – and the movie we’ve decided to bring more attention to with the new episode is writer/director Adam Green’s 2010 film Frozen (watch it Here)… a movie which was released just three years before an animated Disney film came along and took ownership of the title “Frozen” in the minds of most movie-goers. To hear about Adam Green’s Frozen, check out the video embedded above!
This Frozen has the following synopsis: As a winter storm approaches, three people become stranded on a chairlift high above the ground when a ski resort closes for the week.
The film stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, and Kevin Zegers, with an appearance by Green’s Hatchet franchise star Kane Hodder.
