The beloved detective drama Monk held audiences captive with its quirky main character, Adrian Monk, for eight seasons and 125 episodes. Airing on USA Network from 2002 to 2009, the show followed Monk, a former police detective-turned-private investigator with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd), as he solved cases with incredible acumen while grappling with personal loss and mental health struggles.

This article delves into the reasons behind Monk’s ending, exploring its storyline’s natural conclusion, Tony Shalhoub’s career choices, the evolving TV landscape, and the show’s lasting impact on audiences.

Streaming service Disney Hotstar is developing a local version of the American television show “Monk” for Indian viewers. This marks the first South Asian adaptation of the beloved detective comedy series, which originally aired in the United States from 2002 to 2009.
The Indian remake stems from an agreement between production companies Banijay Asia and NBCUniversal Formats. Their partnership aims to bring popular American shows to India through localized adaptations. “Monk” will be the first result of this collaboration coming to Disney Hotstar.
Sumanta Bose, head of content for Disney Hotstar’s Hindi platform, said “Monk” was “an exciting fit” for its mix of humor, mystery and emotional depth. Bose stated the adaptation has been crafted to feel rooted in Indian culture while still offering fans, new and old, a fresh experience.
The original “Monk” followed Adrian Monk, a detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder, as he helped the San Francisco police solve unusual cases.

Matthew Gray Gubler, former star of “Criminal Minds,” has been set to lead the cast of CBS’ new comedic drama pilot for “Einstein,” TheWrap has learned.
The actor, who will also produce the project, will star as Lew Einstein, the great-grandson of iconic theoretical physicist, Albert Einstein.
CBS describes Lew as a “popular professor at Princeton … when he actually shows up for class. Irreverent and misguided, Lew’s genius and famous name weighs heavily on him but using his gift to help solve homicides may — finally — offer his life some direction and purpose.”
If picked up, the series would follow the “brilliant but directionless” Lew as he spends his days comfortably as a tenured professor. However, when his bad boy antics get him in trouble with the law, he is forced to help a local police detective solve her most puzzling cases.
“Monk” creator Andy Breckman will write and executive produce “Einstein.

Matthew Gray Gubler is returning to TV!
While that means he won’t be returning to Criminal Minds, I daresay this might be better.
After entertaining us for so long as part of an ensemble, he’ll now headline an upcoming CBS procedural that is currently titled Einstein. That title is subject to change, but the name recognition might work to its benefit.

According to Deadline, Gubler will star in and produce the new show.
The good news with Einstein is plentiful. It hails from Monk creator and executive producer Andy Breckman and director and executive producer Randy Zisk.
This is excellent news for Criminal Minds fans who miss fan favorite Gubler on the small screen.

Criminal Minds fan favorite Matthew Gray Gubler has been tapped to lead CBS‘s forthcoming procedural pilot for Einstein, a working title for a new series coming to the network. According to Deadline, Gubler is slated to take on the titular role and produce the CBS pilot from Monk‘s Andy Breckman and Randy Zisk. While Breckman will serve as creator and Zisk is attached to direct, both are credited as executive producers. Einstein is based on a German series, and similar to that show and Monk, this new series will feature comedic undertones as new cases are tackled in each installment. CBS Gubler plays Lew Einstein, the great-grandson of famed scientist Albert Einstein, who spends his days as a tenured professor until his bad-boy antics land him in hot water with the law. The situation forces Lew into service helping a local police detective solve her most mind-boggling cases.

Disney’s long-expected move to fold ABC Signature into 20th Television brings to an end the media conglom’s in-house TV studio, which started off as Touchstone Television a decade before Disney bought ABC, subsequently being renamed ABC Studios and more recently ABC Signature.
Launched in 1985, Touchstone TV’s first major hit was Golden Girls, which ran on NBC for seven seasons. Other successful series from that era include Blossom, also for NBC, and Home Improvement, Ellen and Boy Meets World for ABC.

Chucky’s murderous days are over — at least for now. The series, based on the classic horror movie franchise, will not return for a fourth season on Syfy and USA Network. The news comes four months after Part 2 of Chucky‘s third season aired its finale on both NBCUniversal cable networks.
Series creator/executive producer Don Mancini had been looking to carry on. He revealed in April that he had pitched a fourth season, saying at the time that “it’s something I really like to do.” His enthusiasm helped spring the #RenewChucky fan campaign, which has been rallying support for Season 4.
Needless to say, today’s outcome is not what he had hoped for, but Mancini, who also created and wrote movie franchise, remained graceful in his reaction, vowing that this is not Chucky’s last spree.

Another fall TV season is upon us, which means a fresh batch of network procedurals that can roughly be described as The ____ Who Solves Crimes. (Lucifer, The Devil Who Solves Crimes! Sleepy Hollow, The Ichabod Crane Who Solves Crimes!) ABC’s latest entry in the genre, High Potential — premiering Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — is basically The Genius Single Mom Who Solves Crimes, and it honestly doesn’t do much to reinvent the procedural wheel. But it’s still a satisfying underdog tale with a sly sense of humor, thanks to a fantastic lead performance from Kaitlin Olson.

For the first time since 2006, every current Best Drama Guest Actor Emmy nominee is new to the category. The seemingly unflappable leader of the pack is general first-timer Néstor Carbonell of “Shōgun,” whose expected victory could be one of 22 for the freshman series, the 1980 limited version of which took three out of a possible 12 TV academy prizes.
Carbonell’s strongest competitor is John Turturro (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), who has an advantage in this race in that he won the corresponding comedy award for “Monk” two decades ago. Also in the running are former limited series supporting nominees Paul Dano (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”) as well as Emmys newcomer Tracy Letts, whose “Winning Time” bid came as a surprise to most predictors.

Elsbeth stands out because it is one of the only lighthearted mysteries on television, but it never used to be that way.
These types of mysteries were extremely popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Murder She Wrote, Diagnosis: Murder, and Matlock were all top-rated shows, and that trend continued into the early 2000s when Monk and Psych captivated viewers.
Modern television is more likely to feature realistic, gritty police procedurals than lighthearted mysteries, but Elsbeth’s success suggests the tide could be turning back again.

Snoop Dogg spends much of his life in front of a camera. He is in countless ads, hosted a show with Martha Stewart, and, recently, was a near-constant presence at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Earlier in his career, though, he admitted he did not feel comfortable in front of a camera. He shared how he overcame this feeling.
Snoop Dogg said he initially felt uncomfortable in front of a camera
When Snoop began his career, he was a rapper. In the years since, while he continues to make music, he has acted, hosted shows, and started businesses. He said he realized his career could be more than just music when he acted in the 1994 short film Murder Was the Case. He wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera, but he realized the project opened up a new world of opportunities for him.

We’ve gotten more casting for the upcoming USA Network series The Rainmaker, so here’s what we know so far on the coming legal drama!
It’s been a while since USA Network got into scripted drama. After kicking off the big “blue sky era” of hit shows from Monk to Suits, the network scaled back in recent years. However, they’re making a big return with a direct-to-series order of a show based on John Grisham’s The Rainmaker.
Grisham is well known as the author of numerous legal thrillers, including The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, and A Time To Kill. All four of those books were turned into movies, as was his 1995 novel The Rainmaker, which became a 1997 film starring Matt Damon.

Larry David is no stranger to the Emmy Awards. He has been nominated a whopping 31 times now throughout his career, winning twice for writing and producing “Seinfeld” in 1993. Now that “Curb Your Enthusiasm” has wrapped up for good, it’s the last chance for David to finally win an Emmy Award for the long-running HBO comedy series. But what are his chances?
The funnyman received a pair of farewell nominations this year, for Best Comedy Actor and Best Comedy Series. This marks David’s seventh acting bid for playing a fictionalized version of himself, and he’s lost to some truly iconic TV stars over the years: Tony Shalhoub for “Monk” (2003 and ’06), Kelsey Grammer for “Frasier” (2004), Jim Parsons for “The Big Bang Theory” (2010), Jon Cryer for “Two and a Half Men” (2012), and Bill Hader for “Barry” (2018).

Emmy voters are now halfway through final balloting for this year’s awards, making decisions about which drama and comedy series, limited series, talk series, variety series and specials, structured and unstructured reality programs, reality competition shows, animated programs, documentary and nonfiction programs and game shows they like best.
And, oh yeah, they’re also picking their favorite TV movies, although they probably won’t have to think too long or too hard about what seems to have become the Emmys’ least consequential category.
It wasn’t always like that. The Outstanding TV Movie category has produced some notable television, including “Death of a Salesman” with Lee J. Cobb, the ultimate tearjerker “Brian’s Song,” the shocking “Special Bulletin”and 21st century standouts “The Gathering Storm,” “Recount,” “Grey Gardens,” “Behind the Candelabra” and even last year’s winner, “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”

Sallie Ciganovich has styled actors’ hair on “Star Wars” streaming shows like “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka” and earned four Primetime Emmy nominations over her two-decade career.
But these days her struggle to find steady work in Hollywood has led her to reopen what she fondly calls “the shack in the back” — the eight-by-10-foot shed by her pool where she is cutting and coloring friends’ hair to help ensure her family’s survival.
“This was never meant to be my income,” Ciganovich told TheWrap on a recent Sunday, while standing against one wall of her shack, near a framed still from “The Mandalorian” signed by creator and showrunner Jon Favreau.
“It was just always meant to be where my friends would come over and get their hair cut. Or where I would do little projects. It was like my little safe space, where I would practice a hairstyle or whatever.

Vince Vaughn is having a big month with a new AppleTV series and getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The comedic actor also recently made headlines when he appeared on Hot Ones and broke down why studios shy away from his brand of irreverent comedies. You can see Vaughn in a new comedy series from the creator of Ted Lasso and Shrinking Bill Lawrence called Bad Monkey. Our own Alex Maidy recently reviewed the show, saying, “Bad Monkey will appeal to fans of shows like Burn Notice and Monk, but anyone expecting this series to be a comedy version of True Detective is looking in the wrong place.”
As Vaughn gets his new star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he speaks with Variety about some of the projects that never came to fruition. A couple of them involve his Swingers co-star, and current Marvel/Star Wars creative,...

CBS continues to move ahead with its long-term development strategy, ordering another pilot targeting the 2025-26 broadcast season. The network has picked up to pilot drama Einstein (working title), from the Monk team of creator/executive producer Andy Breckman and director/executive producer Randy Zisk.
It follows a pilot order for comedy Dmv and a development room for comedy Eternally Yours (working title) — all looking to join Sheriff Country, CBS’ first new scripted series set for a launch during the 2025-26 season.
The third time at CBS — and fourth time overall — proved to be the charm for mounting an U.S. adaptation of the German procedural Einstein with a pilot order. As Deadline reported exclusively in June, the new take had been heating up at CBS.

CBS is ramping up its development, handing out its first drama pilot order of the current cycle.
It’s for a procedural called Einstein, which centers on the (fictional) great-grandson of Albert Einstein and is based on a German series of the same name. Monk creator Andy Breckman wrote the script and will serve as showrunner, while Randy Zisk (also a Monk alum) is attached to direct and will also be an EP.
The pilot order for Einstein follows news on two comedy projects at CBS: On Monday, the network placed a pilot order for a single-camera comedy called Dmv from creator Dana Klein (Friends, 9Jkl) and opened a development room for a vampire comedy titled Eternally Yours from Ghosts showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. All three projects are produced by CBS Studios and are part of CBS’ year-round development strategy, which embraces different tracks for different types of shows.

Over the past 20 years, Sandra Oh has been a darling of the Emmys, accumulating 14 nominations across multiple genres. But surprisingly, she hasn’t won yet. This year she’s nominated for Best TV Movie for producing “Quiz Lady,” in which she also stars with Awkwafina as sisters trying to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. Last year, the nominees for both Best Drama Guest Actor and Best Drama Guest Actress were drawn from just two shows: “The Last of Us” and “Succession.” The former reaped a lucky seven nominations while the latter nabbed five. We don’t think any show will manage to snag that many nominations across these two drama guest acting categories this year but we do think one show will land more bids than any other: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. And Mrs. Smith.”

Rest easy, Resident Alien fans. The show has officially been renewed for a fourth season!
It was a close call at NBCU about the show's future, so this is excellent news.
The big difference is that the show will no longer air on Syfy but on the sister NBCU site, USA Network.
We all wish USA's Blue Sky programming were still going today.
They've been out of scripted originals for a couple of years, but with the announcement of The Rainmaker last month, they're back in business.

BET wants some Emmys.
In a year where major streamers and legacy networks dominate the Emmy conversations, BET Media Group, which includes BET and BET Studios, has had a record-breaking year for its critically acclaimed content, such as Lee Daniels’ racy sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show,” the drama thriller “Average Joe” and the dark comedy “Diarra From Detroit.” All in all, the legacy broadcast media network has submitted in over 35 Primetime Emmy categories, the most in its history.
BET surprised many in 2022 and 2023 when it picked up back-to-back nominations for “The Ms. Pat Show” director Mary Lou Belli. A veteran in the TV business, she’s helmed notable episodes of “Sister, Sister,” “Monk” and “NCIS.” After dropping its fourth season on May 23, Belli is up for consideration once again for the premiere episode “I’m the Pappy,” alongside co-creator and showrunner Jordan E. Cooper for “The Book of Denise” episode.

Erich Anderson, the familiar character actor who made his film debut in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, played Keri Russell’s father on Felicity and recurred on shows from Steven Bochco, has died. He was 67.
Anderson died Saturday after a “brutal struggle with cancer,” his wife of 21 years, actress Saxon Trainor, and her brother-in-law, Michael O’Malley, announced in an Instagram post.
In Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), Anderson portrayed Rob Dier, who while attempting to avenge his sister’s death meets his brutal end at the hands of Jason in a basement.
He appeared as Dr. Edward Porter, father of Russell’s Felicity Porter, in the 1998 pilot for Felicity, then returned for eight more episodes of the WB network show during its four-season run through 2002.
For Bochco, Anderson played pitcher Bobby Stang on NBC’s Bay City Blues in 1983-84 and drug dealer Don Kirkendall on ABC’s...

“We ended on such a high note, we were very proud of the final two episodes and how the series wrapped up,” reflects Tony Shalhoub on the emotions that were involved in revisiting a character he had bid farewell to so perfectly 15 years ago. For eight seasons, the Emmy Award winner portrayed detective Adrian Monk on the series “Monk,” a character who returns in the Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The star – who also serves as executive producer – says the whole team wanted to “match that or outdo what we did at the end” of the show, which felt like a “daunting proposition.” Watch our exclusive video interview.
Shalhoub makes his return to the role look effortless, but it was important to the actor that he not play the character exactly as he had when he bid the detective farewell in 2009. He says that he and the rest...

Erich Anderson, who was sometimes also credited as E. Erich Anderson, racked up over 100 credits during a screen acting career that stretched from 1983 into the 2020s, but he may be best known for playing the role of Rob in the 1984 slasher classic Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. A character out for revenge, Rob looked like he had a shot at being able to take down hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees for good… but when Rob finally caught up with Jason, things did not go well for him at all. Among Friday the 13th fans, Rob has become a favorite due to the fact that he seems so cool and capable at first, but then whiffs his shot at vengeance in a major way. Sadly, the actor who brought Rob to the screen is no longer with us. Erich Anderson’s wife Saxon Trainor has confirmed through social media that he...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.
