It’s now been 15 years since Krysten Ritter’s Breaking Bad arc came to a tragic, series-altering end. But that eight-episode run in season two of the beloved AMC series continues to bear fruit for the actor.
Last night, she made her return to the home network of Breaking Bad as the star of Orphan Black: Echoes — a spinoff of Tatiana Maslany’s mothership series that picks up 37 years later. Created by Anna Fishko, Ritter’s new character, Lucy, instead of being a clone, was recently printed into existence by a four-dimensional printer. And, despite her best efforts to create a well-adjusted life for herself in just two years’ time, she’s soon forced to piece together the puzzle of who she really is and why she was created.

Illustration by Stephanie Monohan.Kirsten Dunst has played a pageant contestant not once, but twice: famously, in the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), then, in a self-reflexive turn in Showtime’s short-lived satire of predatory capitalism, On Becoming a God in Central Florida (2019). In the latter, Dunst plays Krystal Stubbs, a pageant queen turned widow turned cunning representative of the Founders American Merchandise corporation. In one scene, she instructs a goth teen on a stratagem of competition: “Dazzle by any means necessary. If you want better lightin’ than the other girls, give yourself better lightin’ than the other girls.”Dunst has built a career around this principle. Having started as a child star, she has supported superhero franchises, starred in teen movies and art films alike, and worked in both film and television. In each project, she follows Krystal’s advice, juggling each character’s interiority with bigger-picture concerns. She...

There have been plenty of films set in the classroom over the years, from Goodbye, Mr Chips to The Dead Poets Society, not to mention female-led films such as Mona Lisa Smile or Dangerous Minds. In all the above, the teacher is the hero of the piece. In German director Ilker Çatak’s The Teachers’ Lounge, however, the teacher is far from being a hero, despite her good and honourable intentions.
The film opens with the camera following maths teacher Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) as she strides purposefully into school and makes her way to the teachers’ lounge before heading to class. Before the film has even got going or a line has been spoken, Çatak alerts his audience to the fact that this film is no School of Rock. Thanks to Marvin Miller’s truly disturbing score, the tone is set for a psychological thriller that will set the nerves on edge.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Return of the King, the final part of the Academy Award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Adapted from celebrated author J.R.R. Tolkien’s high fantasy novels of the same name, these films more than just introduced the iconic realm of Middle-earth to millions of fans around the world; they became legends in their own right. So much so, The Lord of the Rings has become a holiday staple celebrated by millions around the globe.
Indeed, despite being set in a world without the usual Yuletide trappings, this trilogy has quietly become something of a Christmas tradition, and an annual viewing appointment every December. Here’s how the films’ surprise connection with the holiday season began, why they’re so perfectly suited for the festive start of winter, and how The Hobbit trilogy only strengthened the association a decade later.

If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.

Melanie Lynskey says her Mrs. America co-stars Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson helped her negotiate better on-set accommodations for Yellowjackets after they offered up their trailers for her to pump and breastfeed while they were all working on the Hulu limited series.
In a new interview with The Independent that published Saturday, Lynskey opened up about navigating Hollywood, including turning down roles and why her Mona Lisa Smile audition made her “feel seen,” her career resurgence (and if she thinks it will last), as well as the rockier time in her relationship with husband Jason Ritter as he addressed his alcohol addiction.

Dominic West is in the "very early stages" of making a movie about legendary horse Red Rum. The 'Crown' star is hoping to direct a film about the late equine, who won the Grand National three times in 1973, 1974, and 1977, and he is surprised a motion picture about the sporting legend hasn't been made before. He said: "I'm hoping to get a film of Red Rum organised."It's very, very early stages. I'm hopefully going to direct it."But West believes he is "too old" to portray Red Rum's trainer Ginger McCain, because he is keen to depict some of the late star's early life. He said: "I'd love to play Ginger, but I think I'm too old. We want to do some of his early life and his struggle and meeting Beryl [McCain's wife] and all that, and I think I'm too old for that really."The star...

DC fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Michael Keaton as Batman in ... well, he was supposed to appear in the canceled "Batgirl," but as far as we know right now, no one will get to look at that. All signs point to the release of "The Flash" — despite the troubling issues with its star Ezra Miller — where Keaton will don the suit of the caped crusader, but nothing is 100 percent right now. While some of us (me ... it's me) are praying to the comic book gods that Keaton's Batman will indeed return, we do have something of his to look forward to.
Michael Keaton will be making his directorial debut in the upcoming noir thriller "Knox Goes Away," which he will also star in. Principal photography has already wrapped on the film, according to Deadline. He's got some drama-heavy hitters involved, including Al Pacino, but also comedy stars like the brilliant Suzy Nakamura.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Julia Roberts was one of the dominant Hollywood stars for a good twenty-year period. From her breakout role in 1988’s Mystic Pizza, Roberts skyrocketed to the top of the A-list when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Garry Marshall’s Pretty Woman. An unlikely Cinderella story about an escort that falls in love with a high-powered executive, it’s a movie that is definitely a Hollywood fairytale, but one that a lot of people loved in 1990, with it being one of the year’s top-grossing movies. From there, Roberts made a string of hits, including Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill and many more, but respect in more heavy vehicles eluded her. Movies like Mary Reilly and Michael Collins were embarrassing for how miscast she was, and for awhile, it looked like she would be stuck doing...

Pop quiz! What do Zooey Deschanel, Ryan Gosling and Julia Roberts have in common? They've all played teachers. In honor of World Teachers' Day Oct. 5, we're celebrating the stars who gave extra credit-worthy performances for their roles as educators. In case you need a refresher for the exam: Zooey was quirky middle school instructor, Jess, in New Girl. Similarly, Ryan stunned with his 2007 portrayal of a troubled history teacher in Half Nelson. As for Julia, she deserved an apple on her desk for playing a devoted Wellesley professor in Mona Lisa Smile. These stars have certainly taught us a thing or two about good acting. Topher Grace has had a charmed few years, with roles in BlacKkKlansman, The Hot Zone and Black Mirror under his belt. And he returns to sitcoms this season with Home Economics, about a group of adult siblings dealing with very different financial situations. It’s his first sitcom lead since breaking through with That ’70s Show, more than 20 years ago. Here, he muses on his career memories and recalls some film and TV favorites.

My mom would only let me watch black and white movies. I wasn’t allowed to watch television as a kid. At the time, I was mad at her, because everyone was talking about whatever happened on The Wonder Years. But I look back now and think that was great. She also took us to MGM Studios in Orlando, which is a fictional mini version of Hollywood. I thought, Could it be this wonderful?...

Just look at this line-up of nominees: Beyonce vs. Taylor Swift vs. Elton John vs. Cynthia Erivo — along with composer and Egot champ Robert Lopez and spouse Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Will there be a glitzier or more highly competitive category at the 77th Golden Globes than Best Original Song in a Motion Picture? Too bad that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association doesn’t make room for musical performances during its party that passes as an awards show.
One can only hope that these are also the same candidates that will show up on the Oscar ballot. Perhaps John Travolta will be given another a chance to right his wrong when he weirdly introduced “Frozen’s” Elsa — Idina Menzel — as Adele Dazeem before she sang the winning”Let It Go” at the 2014 ceremonies — that is if she gets to wail “Into the Unknown” from its sequel, “Frozen 2.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal kicked off the 57th Annual New York Film Festival with a Negroni in hand.
“Who doesn’t love a Negroni?” the actress, who attended the festival as a guest of Campari, asked People on Friday night.
Gyllenhaal’s husband Peter Sarsgaard joined her for the evening — which included the premiere of Netflix’s The Irishman — but she admitted their date nights usually skew a little more low-key.
“This is super typical,” Gyllenhaal joked of their glam night out. “We do hair and makeup for an hour-and-a-half. But at the same time, it is lovely to come see a movie by Martin Scorsese,...

Talking to Maggie Gyllenhaal can be a little disorienting. She has a high-pitched, cartoonish voice, which she uses to express deep things. One critic notoriously said that she possessed a “Kewpie-doll silliness”, but clearly it’s a flaw in our culture that we expect serious thoughts to be couched in sonorous tones. “We live in a masculine world,” she says, “and in America – especially very recently – as much as we would like to believe otherwise, it’s a misogynistic world.”
The 41-year-old, Oscar-nominated for Crazy Heart (2009) and so mesmerising in BBC Two’s thriller The Honourable Woman (2014), is explaining the difficulties women encounter in clearly expressing something feminine in art. “It’s not impossible, and it certainly happens,” she says, “but I think just because something is written by a woman, or directed by a woman, that doesn’t necessarily make it feminine – because the context that we’re in is fundamentally masculine.

Indie-film streaming service Fandor said it was “sad to hear the news” about WarnerMedia’s plans to shut down FilmStruck at the end of next month. But it also saw a business opportunity.
Fandor is giving current FilmStruck subscribers a special offer to check out over 4,000 indie films, documentaries, international features and shorts available on the platform. For a limited time, the service is offering FilmStruck members a $24.99 annual subscription to Fandor (a 57% discount from the regular $59.99 annual plan).
More info is at this link. It’s not clear how Fandor is verifying whether someone is an existing FilmStruck customer, and it seems like a general promo open to all new Fandor subscribers.
“We have asked for verification, but we will ultimately need to believe in the goodwill of subscribers to redeem based on the honor system,” Fandor chief marketing officer John Zamoiski said.

Mike Newell is a director I bring up far more than one might imagine given how widely underappreciated he seems to be. Though he may always be best known for his films that – made a dent in the overall cultural awareness (Four Weddings and a Funeral), managed a certain cult following (Into the West), involve young wizards (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), or capitalize on their cast (Donnie Brasco), much of his best work remains virtually unseen. Whether it’s The Good Father, Enchanted April,, or An Awfully Big Adventure, to name only a few, much of his best work is all but unknown outside the circles of the most devout cinephiles. Even some of the more recognizable efforts that are perhaps avoided with good reason – Pushing Tin, Mona Lisa Smile, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – are difficult to fault in terms of their direction, and...

With her steely hauteur, Isabelle Huppert is utterly arresting in Paul Verhoeven’s provocative film. No other actor could have pulled it off
This film is about an outrage. Maybe it is an outrage. It has invented a new genre: the rape-revenge black comedy, and it could not possibly have existed without Isabelle Huppert. She is the only star capable of carrying this off, the only actor with sufficient hauteur to reassure you that all of the film’s provocations are 100% intentional. It would be inconceivable without her armoury of tics: the Mona Lisa smile of faint amusement, the veiled mask of weary disapproval, or the occasional widening of the eyes to indicate fleeting astonishment at something or someone more than usually stupid. She has a face that makes it look as if she is wearing a pair of exceptionally expensive and stylish dark glasses, even when she isn’t.

Now, the actress has taken her love for the calming act of weaving wooly work to the next level: She’s created her own pattern and kit with We Are Knitters.

Back in 2013 I wrote about a poster for Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers that appeared to be knitted out of wool. It turned out, in fact, to be a piece of digital ingenuity, though no less impressive or charming for that. But I recently came across this poster for Raam Reddy’s Locarno-winning film Thithi, whose artwork, it turns out, is actually embroidered by hand.Thithi, which played at New Directors/New Films in New York this past spring, is a wonderful portrait of four generations of men and the community that surrounds them in the Karnatakan province of Southern India. The idea of having a poster embroidered by hand by a team of local artisans fits perfectly with the communal generosity of the film (which has the feel of a sun-baked Ealing Comedy). The poster features the majestic, grizzled head of Gadappa, the wily, peripatetic, devil-may-care senior, whose 101-year-old father,...

Last month we shared a Top 10 video with you listing the all-time best opening shots in movies. Now today, we have a new video from CineFix that gives us a Top 10 list of the best closing shots of all time.
The end of a movie ties the whole story together. It completes the journey of the characters we've spent our time watching. "The final moments of a movie can make things feel complete, leave you wanting more, and bring out deep emotions."
I love the feeling I get when there's a great ending to a film. Below the video I've included the entire list that you can go through in case you are in a place where you can't watch it. All of the choices that CineFix made here are fantastic.

Kubrick set out to avoid “intellectual verbalization,” opting instead to try to speak directly to the subconscious.

Robert De Niro is so widely respected in Hollywood that he could really do anything he wants at this stage in his career. To the Oscar winner’s credit, though, he’s not rolling over and taking easy paycheck roles all the time – for years, De Niro has been pushing to get The Comedian made, with an eye to starring in the Art Linson-penned drama. And now, he’ll finally complete that passion project, having recruited Taylor Hackford to direct the pic.
De Niro will take on the role of a self-destructive, acerbic insult comic inspired partly by comedian Don Rickles (De Niro’s co-star in Casino). It won’t be the actor’s first time playing a professional funnyman – he took on the role of aspiring comedian Rupert Pupkin to widespread acclaim in The King of Comedy.

The great thing about being Robert De Niro is that any project you want to make will eventually get off the ground, even if based on your star power alone. Such is the case with The Comedian, an Art Linson-scribed drama that De Niro has been trying to make for years, first with Martin Scorsese then with Sean Penn. Now, the two-time Oscar winner is finally moving ahead with the project, having secured Donnie Brasco helmer Mike Newell to sit behind the camera.
De Niro will portray an accomplished insult comic, possibly inspired by Don Rickles. Linson previously penned Hollywood satire What Just Happened (which De Niro starred in), and he’ll also be producing here. Interestingly enough, the stand-up material was written by Jeffrey Ross, best known for his digs during Comedy Central and Friars Club celebrity roasts.

When the television mini-series Roots first aired on ABC-tv in 1977, it was a seismic event in the medium. The adaptation of the Alex Haley novel Roots: The Saga Of An American Family earned an unprecedented 37 Emmy nominations, winning nine, in addition to taking home a Golden Globe and a Peabody Award. The ambitious project – presenting the ancestry of one contemporary man in narrative form – sparked discussion, debate and interest in the history of slavery – something that had long been a taboo subject.
The story begins in colonial times, in 1750, with the birth of Kunta Kinte in The Gambia, West Africa. At age 15 he is captured and sold into slavery – transported by ship to colonial America. By the late 18th century, Kunta has made many unsuccessful attempts to escape. He meets a cook named Belle, whom he marries and with whom he has a daughter named Kizzy. Kizzy grows up...
