Charlie Hunnam will star in “Monster” Season 3 at Netflix as notorious serial killer Ed Gein.

Series co-creator Ryan Murphy made the announcement onstage during a promotional event in Los Angeles for “Monster” Season 2, which focuses on the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents. The first season of the anthology series focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Gein, who also hailed from Wisconsin like Dahmer, became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains. Gein’s case served as an inspiration for several major pop culture characters later on, including Norman Bates in “Psycho” and Buffalo Bill in “Silence of the Lambs.”

Exclusive: The BBC has dismissed viewer complaints about an episode of Doctor Who featuring a historic gay kiss between Ncuti Gatwa and Jonathan Groff.

Two disgruntled audience members took issue with the “inappropriate sexual innuendo” that developed between Gatwa’s Time Lord and Groff’s bounty hunter, Rogue, in a Bridgerton-inspired story.

The viewers said the Season 14 episode, titled ‘Rogue,’ featured content that was “unsuitable for children.” One person added that the speed of the Doctor and Rogue’s connection was “concerning.”

The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (Ecu) threw out the concerns. In a ruling on Thursday, the unit said the sexual innuendo was mild and suitable for Doctor Who’s young audience.

“The Ecu considered the sexual innuendo to be towards the mildest end of the spectrum and in any case likely to go over the heads of children,” the Ecu said.

But before she took on that project, she had starred in the 2023 slasher Thanksgiving, which ended up being a box office hit. Now, she's set to star in a new horror movie titled The Designer, so it doesn't look like she is quite done with the horror world just yet.

The Designer is being described as a body horror flick. It comes from American filmmaker Em Johnson, who is writing the script and will also be directing. Johnson is best known for writing and directing the drama film Balloon Animal. Incandescent Entertainment, First Bloom Films, and Hemlock Circle Productions are the production companies behind the new horror film, with Jiarui Guo, Warner Davis, and Katherine Waddell serving as producers.

The year 2024 has been nerve-wracking for television fans. No shows are safe, and many reigning champs are seeing the end of their careers.

Did any of us really expect to see long-running success shows like Station 19 or Blue Bloods end?

But they are ending as networks try to tighten their production budgets. That means saying goodbye to some of our favorites to make room for the new and improved.

It can be tricky to get attached to a freshman season of any show. You can get attached to the characters, only to find out it was for naught when the season doesn't succeed.

Thankfully, that's not the case with Justin Hartley's new series, Tracker.

Charlie Hunnam has been cast in the lead role of the series adaptation of “Criminal” at Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned.

“Criminal” is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The official description states that the series is “an interlocking universe of crime stories.”

Hunnam will star as Leo. The character is described as “A brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.”

Hunnam joins previously announced cast members Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, and Kadeem Hardison in the series.

This is not the first time Hunnam has starred as a criminal in a TV series or film.

Amazon’s Freevee is dropping out of High School.

The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.

The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.

Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.

In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. There is some level of content reciprocity between the two versions of Paramount With Showtime, but the whole thing is just confusing.

Nearly one year ago, when Paramount Global announced that it would be rebranding its iconic premium cable network Showtime as “Paramount With Showtime,” it drew a lot of confusion from customers and people in and around the industry. The first step in this transformation came when the company renamed the premium, ad-free tier on its flagship streaming service Paramount with the Paramount With Showtime moniker back in June 2023. As of Monday, Jan. 8, Paramount has now officially made the move on the cable side as well, making things even more confusing than they already were.

As of Monday, both the ad-free streaming tier and premium cable channel are known as Paramount With Showtime. Streaming subscribers have access to the linear channels, but linear subscribers will not automatically have access to the streaming service.

Showtime, one of the most trusted premium cable channels this side of HBO, is rebranding. The channel, owned by Paramount Global, is officially set to relaunch with a new name in January 2024. Get ready for the Paramount with Showtime era. This is a title that the company had already been leaning into on the streaming side, but now the long-standing cable channel is taking on the new branding as well. For better or worse, it's a corporate synergy move.

The Max series based on DeuxMoi’s novel “Anon Pls” has attached Diablo Cody and Ryan O’Connell to serve as writers, Variety has learned from sources.

As initially reported in May 2022, the project is currently set up at Max with a script-to-series commitment. It is being developed as a one-hour drama series via Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

The Writers Guild of America strike is putting the spotlight on key issues that are important to ensuring a future for writers, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong and colleagues told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday in central London where they participated in a show of support for the WGA strike on a “Global Day of Solidarity” that used the moniker and hashtag Screenwriters Everywhere.

Armstrong discussed such core hot-button issues in the labor dispute as pay, writers rooms and AI.

Channel 4 has picked up a wealth of U.S. content for its rebranded streaming service including Dr. Death, Queer As Folk and Becoming Elizabeth.

The shows will become available over the coming months on the streaming service that was previously called All4 but is now simply titled Channel 4.

Leading the acquisitions slate is NBC’s Doctor Death Season 1, which was based on the hugely successful podcast of the same name. Peacock’s Queer as Folk U.S., meanwhile, is heading to its natural home 25 years after Russell T Davies’ Channel 4 breakout first aired. That show was cancelled by Peacock after one season.

The pair were acquired from NBCUniversal alongside The Girl from Plainville.

Elsewhere, Anya Reiss’ Becoming Elizabeth aired on Starz last year and tells the story of England’s most iconic queen, while Channel 4 has also bought Cruel Summer from eOne.

After first sparking rumors that she may be joining Darren Star on his latest series, “Emily in Paris“, when they appeared together at the season 3 premiere, Kim Cattrall responded to Et about possibly reuniting with the “Sex and the City” creator.

U.K. producer Nicola Shindler received on Tuesday the third Women in Series Award at Series Mania, Europe biggest TV festival.

Few awards seem such just reward. From serving as a script editor on “Cracker” (1993), Jimmy McGovern’s breakout, to producing his “Hillsborough” (1995) and executive producing “Queer as Folk” (1999) which heralded Russell T. Davies as a major writing talent, very few producers have been so consistently successful down the decades.

Shows produced by Shindler in just the last 10 years take in Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley” (2014), Harlan Coben’s “The Five” (2016) and “Safe” (2018), Davies’ “Years and Years and It’s a Sin, his consecration, and now “Nolly,” made by Shindler out of Quay Street Productions, her new label launched in 2021 as part of ITV Studios.

“Game of Thrones” alum Jeremy Podeswa has signed on to direct the pilot of Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming limited series “Blade Runner 2099.” Podeswa, most recently the DGA Award-nominated director behind HBO Max’s “Station Eleven,” will also serve as producing director and executive producer of “Blade Runner 2099.”

A TV sequel to the film “Blade Runner 2049” (itself a sequel to the landmark original “Blade Runner”), the new series comes from showrunner/executive producer Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”). Ridley Scott is also an executive producer on “Blade Runner 2099,” which comes from Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions. Also joining the writers room is Tom Spezialy (“The Leftovers”), who will also serve as an executive producer.

“Blade Runner 2099” has been a long time coming. Scott first revealed the series was in the works in November 2021, while Amazon revealed it was in development in February 2022. The series was officially ordered last September.

Nicola Shindler, CEO of Quay Street Production and the producer of such acclaimed British series as It’s A Sin, Queer as Folk and Happy Valley, has been named the recipient of this year’s Woman in Series award by international television festival Series Mania.

Series Mania founder and general director Laurence Herszberg and Francesco Capurro, director of the festival’s industry section, the Series Mania Forum, unveiled the news on Wednesday, timed to International Women’s Day.

The Women in Series award, presented in association with female professionals associations the European Women’s Audiovisual Network and Pour Les Femmes Dans Les Médias, honors the vision and leadership of “a remarkable woman from the audiovisual industry.” Shindler will receive the prize at a gala ceremony in Lille, France on March 21.
