Netflix’s next Christmas movie offering of 2024 has arrived, and it might make you melt. Or it might heat you up. Or … both?
“Hot Frosty” is now streaming, following the love story of Kathy and Jack. Their meet cute? Kathy unintentionally brings Jack to life with a magic scarf — because he’s a snowman. Yes, seriously. They spend the movie navigating his secret, all while he attempts to not melt into a literal puddle. Again, seriously.
That said, it’s pretty delightful, and it definitely has a pretty stacked cast. Here are the major players you’ll recognize.

Charlie Hunnam will star in “Monster” Season 3 at Netflix as notorious serial killer Ed Gein.
Series co-creator Ryan Murphy made the announcement onstage during a promotional event in Los Angeles for “Monster” Season 2, which focuses on the Menendez brothers and the murder of their parents. The first season of the anthology series focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
Gein, who also hailed from Wisconsin like Dahmer, became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains. Gein’s case served as an inspiration for several major pop culture characters later on, including Norman Bates in “Psycho” and Buffalo Bill in “Silence of the Lambs.”

Following weeks of rumors, the Friday, August 30 episode saw what is likely the end of the road for actor Adam J. Harrington on ABC’s “General Hospital” after his character, John “Jagger” Cates, was killed off.
During a face-off with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), John confronts the mobster, telling him he should turn himself in by confessing to his crimes. Unfortunately for the FBI agent, Sonny had the upper hand, informing John that he made a mistake by going after his family, something the coffee importer/exporter had warned him about previously. In the end, Sonny shoots two bullets into John as the rain pours down over them.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) after his final episode aired, Harrington seemingly addressed his exit, captioning the post, “Good night all……” The post was accompanied by a photograph of a sunset. Separately, in a post on his Instagram story timeline,...

Exclusive: The BBC has dismissed viewer complaints about an episode of Doctor Who featuring a historic gay kiss between Ncuti Gatwa and Jonathan Groff.
Two disgruntled audience members took issue with the “inappropriate sexual innuendo” that developed between Gatwa’s Time Lord and Groff’s bounty hunter, Rogue, in a Bridgerton-inspired story.
The viewers said the Season 14 episode, titled ‘Rogue,’ featured content that was “unsuitable for children.” One person added that the speed of the Doctor and Rogue’s connection was “concerning.”
The BBC’s Executive Complaints Unit (Ecu) threw out the concerns. In a ruling on Thursday, the unit said the sexual innuendo was mild and suitable for Doctor Who’s young audience.
“The Ecu considered the sexual innuendo to be towards the mildest end of the spectrum and in any case likely to go over the heads of children,” the Ecu said.

You can currently catch Gina Gershon in the action comedy film Borderlands. But before she took on that project, she had starred in the 2023 slasher Thanksgiving, which ended up being a box office hit. Now, she's set to star in a new horror movie titled The Designer, so it doesn't look like she is quite done with the horror world just yet.
The Designer is being described as a body horror flick. It comes from American filmmaker Em Johnson, who is writing the script and will also be directing. Johnson is best known for writing and directing the drama film Balloon Animal. Incandescent Entertainment, First Bloom Films, and Hemlock Circle Productions are the production companies behind the new horror film, with Jiarui Guo, Warner Davis, and Katherine Waddell serving as producers.

Juliette Lewis and Peter Dinklage hope to continue their respective career highs with the upcoming Western novel adaptation “The Thicket.”

Warning: contains spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Legend of Ruby Sunday”
Ncuti Gatwa’s first run of Doctor Who episodes was designed as a fresh start for the show – hence the decision – by everybody not too stubborn and/or confused to break continuity with the post-2005 numbering system – to call it “season one”.
A line was drawn, in salt, after the 60th anniversary specials, which banished the Doctor’s grief and trauma to a slowly healing Fourteen. Fifteen was freed up for fun, fantasy-filled adventures with a box-fresh companion. Goodbye to baggage, and ta-ra to decades and decades of teetering, suffocating lore. Come one, come all to Doctor Who. No previous experience necessary!
And then, in apparent contradiction of the show’s season one-newness, two-part season finale “The Legend of Ruby Sunday/Empire of Death” reintroduced a villain from 1975 serial “Pyramids of Mars”. Wouldn’t any newcomers the show...

The year 2024 has been nerve-wracking for television fans. No shows are safe, and many reigning champs are seeing the end of their careers.
Did any of us really expect to see long-running success shows like Station 19 or Blue Bloods end?
But they are ending as networks try to tighten their production budgets. That means saying goodbye to some of our favorites to make room for the new and improved.
It can be tricky to get attached to a freshman season of any show. You can get attached to the characters, only to find out it was for naught when the season doesn't succeed.
Thankfully, that's not the case with Justin Hartley's new series, Tracker.

This piece first appeared in the February 2021 issue of Empire.
Russell T Davies is exhausted. The story he's had on his mind for decades is finally arriving on television, in the form of visceral, angry, funny, transgressive five-part drama It’s A Sin, and he's still coming to terms with it. When Empire meets Davies, 57, in a London hotel bar, he's still processing it. "I think I'm stunned that, having wanted to write this for about 30 years, we've actually made it." he explains. "And now I'm a little bit bereft."
Once he gets going though, digging deep into the show's long difficult glorious birth, he doesn't seem bereft at all. He's burning with excitement and pride, in fact, palpably thrilled that he's managed to tell the stories of his friends from the 1980s and the virus that cut a swathe through their lives. The series isn't so much broadly autobiographical...

Charlie Hunnam has been cast in the lead role of the series adaptation of “Criminal” at Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned.
“Criminal” is based on the graphic novels of the same name by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The official description states that the series is “an interlocking universe of crime stories.”
Hunnam will star as Leo. The character is described as “A brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.”
Hunnam joins previously announced cast members Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, and Kadeem Hardison in the series.
This is not the first time Hunnam has starred as a criminal in a TV series or film.

Amazon’s Freevee is dropping out of High School.
The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.
The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.
Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

There is some level of content reciprocity between the two versions of Paramount With Showtime, but the whole thing is just confusing.
Nearly one year ago, when Paramount Global announced that it would be rebranding its iconic premium cable network Showtime as “Paramount With Showtime,” it drew a lot of confusion from customers and people in and around the industry. The first step in this transformation came when the company renamed the premium, ad-free tier on its flagship streaming service Paramount with the Paramount With Showtime moniker back in June 2023. As of Monday, Jan. 8, Paramount has now officially made the move on the cable side as well, making things even more confusing than they already were.
As of Monday, both the ad-free streaming tier and premium cable channel are known as Paramount With Showtime. Streaming subscribers have access to the linear channels, but linear subscribers will not automatically have access to the streaming service.

Showtime, one of the most trusted premium cable channels this side of HBO, is rebranding. The channel, owned by Paramount Global, is officially set to relaunch with a new name in January 2024. Get ready for the Paramount with Showtime era. This is a title that the company had already been leaning into on the streaming side, but now the long-standing cable channel is taking on the new branding as well. For better or worse, it's a corporate synergy move.
On January 8, 2024, Showtime will officially rebrand as Paramount with Showtime, so anyone who subscribes to the channel will need to be aware of the title change. That means the cable channel will have the same name as the company's top-tier streaming offering. Paramount also has an "essential" plan with ads that does not feature Showtime's original series. In a press release, Paramount explained: "The move aligns the brand with the Paramount with Showtime plan,...

The Doctor Who Christmas special is back! On December 25 2023, the Fifteenth Doctor’s first big adventure will arrive, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, and Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday. TV presenter Davina McCall will play herself in the episode, solving the long-teased mystery of which 2005 guest star would be returning (McCall voiced the Davinadroid in series one’s “Bad Wolf”).
The BBC announces in the official plot synopsis that in “The Church on Ruby Road” the Doctor will face “mythical and mysterious goblins”:
“Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby was abandoned in the snow. Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret of her birth.
Little is known about Ruby Sunday as she was abandoned on Christmas Eve as a baby. Now living with her mum, Carla and grandmother, Cherry her world is about to be turned upside when she...

Long running BBC documentary series imagine dedicates an episode to writer Russell T Davies, and we now have a confirmed airdate.
There is no denying that Doctor Who fans have a lot to thank Russell T Davies for, not least resurrecting the show in such spectacular fashion in 2005. Even to that point though, Davies’ body of work was already worthy of conversation and appreciation. Now that body of work is to go under the microscope too.
That’s because Russell T Davies – who has re-taken on the role of Doctor Who boss of course – is to be the subject of an episode of documentary series imagine.

With the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and representatives of Hollywood studios and streamers reaching a tentative deal on a new contract late Sunday, international reactions started pouring in Monday.
Among the groups chiming in on the development was the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb). “We send our congratulations to our sister union in the States on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP,” Wggb chair Lisa Holdsworth said in a statement. “In the past 146 days we’ve seen an extraordinary show of solidarity from writers and their union siblings on both sides of the Atlantic, and indeed around the world. We’ve been overwhelmed by the response of our own membership in standing with their striking colleagues overseas — you have followed the WGA strike rules to the letter, turned out to the Wggb protest in London in the summer and sent a tsunami of support on social media.

In Red, White & Royal Blue, an unexpected fling goes from playful secret to intimate love story for Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the first son of the United States, and Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), Britain’s spare.
Adapted for the screen by co-writers Ted Malawer and Matthew López (who pulled double duty as director) from Casey McQuiston’s new, wildly popular adult best-seller of the same name, the film arrives just a year after a slew of notable (and often comedic) queer romance releases — including Fire Island, Bros, My Policeman and fellow Prime Video title Anything’s Possible — and amid several anticipated 2023 titles like Bottoms, Joy Ride and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
With the arrival of these films and Red, White & Royal Blue comes fuller depictions of not just queer identity and life, but also intimacy. It’s a topic that has historically been taboo on U.

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

The Writers Guild of America strike is putting the spotlight on key issues that are important to ensuring a future for writers, Succession creator Jesse Armstrong and colleagues told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday in central London where they participated in a show of support for the WGA strike on a “Global Day of Solidarity” that used the moniker and hashtag Screenwriters Everywhere.
Armstrong discussed such core hot-button issues in the labor dispute as pay, writers rooms and AI.
“Writers rooms need lots of different perspectives,” he told THR. And if you can’t make a living as a writer, we won’t get young people joining the industry.”
AI affects every area of life these days. “Anyone who works right now is thinking how they could be replaced by AI,” Armstrong explains. “For writers, there’s a particular concern that work that previous writers have done, or [we have done] ourselves, could...

British TV and film writer Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials, The Eddy, Enola Holmes) braved the London heat on Wednesday to join an estimated more than 200 members of writing and other guilds to show solidarity with striking Writers Guild of America members in Hollywood.

“The thing that I’m particularly interested in is the younger writers and the people breaking through. That’s so vital in this country. TV is going to get bad very, very quickly unless we find a way to help these young writers through. And if we’re not, if...

The Writers’ Guild of Great Britain (Wggb) on Wednesday joined writers and other workers in the media and entertainment sectors around the world for “Screenwriters Everywhere,” a global day of solidarity with striking Hollywood writers. The goal of the protest organized in central London was to “stand in support of the 11,500 members of Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America East” who have been on strike since May 2.
The Wggb trade union, representing writers for TV, film, theater, audio, books, poetry, comedy, animation and videogames, said its members would meet up at London’s Leicester Square from around 1 p.m. local time, with the meeting point being full of symbolism: a statue of William Shakespeare in the square. ‘Doctor Death’, ‘Queer As Folk’ & ‘Becoming Elizabeth’ Head To Rebranded Channel 4 Streaming Service
Channel 4 has picked up a wealth of U.S. content for its rebranded streaming service including Dr. Death, Queer As Folk and Becoming Elizabeth.
The shows will become available over the coming months on the streaming service that was previously called All4 but is now simply titled Channel 4.
Leading the acquisitions slate is NBC’s Doctor Death Season 1, which was based on the hugely successful podcast of the same name. Peacock’s Queer as Folk U.S., meanwhile, is heading to its natural home 25 years after Russell T Davies’ Channel 4 breakout first aired. That show was cancelled by Peacock after one season.
The pair were acquired from NBCUniversal alongside The Girl from Plainville.
Elsewhere, Anya Reiss’ Becoming Elizabeth aired on Starz last year and tells the story of England’s most iconic queen, while Channel 4 has also bought Cruel Summer from eOne.

Sex and the City was full of raunchy scenes that the show’s cast Kim Cattrall and her co-stars had to indulge in. But there was one sequence in the hit HBO television series Cattrall felt her character Samantha would never do.

Part of the appeal of Sex and the City was the show’s loose and groundbreaking sense of humor. In its continuing mission to help older Doctor Who fans relive their childhoods, and make even older Doctor Who fans say “Wait a second, that was your childhood? But you’re 30!” it has been announced that the next Doctor Who we see will not only be written by Russell T Davies, the showrunner of this version of Who’s first four seasons (plus specials), it will not only star classic, fan favourite Doctor David Tennant, and classic, fan favourite companion Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), it will also be scored by classic, fan favourite composer Murray Gold.
If you don’t recognise the name, you will still know his work if you’ve watched any of the increasingly-inaccurately-named “new” series Who prior to Jodie Whittaker’s incarnation. He is, in many ways, as responsible for the feel and identity of the show as Russell T Davies or his successor, Steven Moffat.

U.K. producer Nicola Shindler received on Tuesday the third Women in Series Award at Series Mania, Europe biggest TV festival.
Few awards seem such just reward. From serving as a script editor on “Cracker” (1993), Jimmy McGovern’s breakout, to producing his “Hillsborough” (1995) and executive producing “Queer as Folk” (1999) which heralded Russell T. Davies as a major writing talent, very few producers have been so consistently successful down the decades.
Shows produced by Shindler in just the last 10 years take in Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley” (2014), Harlan Coben’s “The Five” (2016) and “Safe” (2018), Davies’ “Years and Years and It’s a Sin, his consecration, and now “Nolly,” made by Shindler out of Quay Street Productions, her new label launched in 2021 as part of ITV Studios.
“Her lineup is amazing,” said Francesco Capurro, head of the Series Mania Forum, introducing the Award on Tuesday.
