14 years ago, we learned that Denis Leary's Apostle production company was developing a television series based on Andrew Niccol's sci-fi drama "Gattaca." It was a vague announcement buried in a story about the conclusion of Leary's FX show "Rescue Me." There wasn't so much as a logline. All we knew was that Gil Grant, a relentlessly mainstream TV writer best known for working on "24" and "NCIS," had been placed in charge of developing this cerebral property for Apostle. Nothing ever came of it, and we all forgot it was ever a thing — until today.
According to Deadline, "Homeland" co-creators Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa are developing a "Gattaca" series for Showtime via Sony Pictures Television. There's nary a word about Apostle in the trade break, but one of the original film's producers, Danny DeVito, is back in the fold. These are talented folks, but was there a...

And with that, we have the potential for a The Rookie spinoff!
"Simone" was the first installment of a two-episode event that has The Rookie Season 4 Episode 19 serving as a backdoor pilot for the Niecy Nash-Betts led FBI spinoff. And it certainly kicked things off with a bang.
We spent much of the hour getting to know Simone Clark. So, how do you feel about her? Would you tune in to a series devoted to her obstacles as a near-50-year-old FBI trainee with an alternative style?
As a backdoor pilot, they balanced things well. We spent a significant amount of time with Simone and got to know her rather well, and because of the "all hands on deck" approach to the case, nearly all the other characters were involved.
As a result, it didn't feel as if this newcomer dominated everything and shoved the characters with whom we're most familiar to the side,...

The trailer for the two-part event that tees up a possible spinoff of ABC’s recently renewed The Rookie gets off to an explosive start, as Officers Nolan and Chen barely dodge a detonating bomb.
As previously reported, the as-yet-untitled spinoff’s planted pilot, airing across two episodes, will introduce FBI trainee Simone Clark, played by Claws‘ Niecy Nash. Described as “a force of nature” and “the living embodiment of a dream deferred,” Simone is the oldest rookie in the FBI Academy.

The burden of expectation weighs heavily on the second outing of the Bridgerton family, who first arrived in our lives as a source of much-needed relief, graciously whisking us away in a scintillating flurry. In the midst of our pandemic-fueled depression, we were offered a healthy dose of unabashed Regency-era confection that blended Austen sensibilities with juicy Shondaland extravagance. This sparkling, pop-infused take on the mannered costume drama somehow brought together the best of those very divergent worlds with heady fanfare, so yes, there was much hope for recapturing that thrilling high in season 2. With its grand return,...

Olivier Dahan’s “Simone, A Woman of the Century” completes the trilogy he began with the Edith Piaf biopic “La Vie en Rose,” starring Marion Cotillard, and “Grace of Monaco,” starring Nicole Kidman. Dahan spoke with Variety during the Unifrance Rendezvous in Paris, where the film had its market premiere.
“Simone,” starring Elsa Zylberstein (“Un plus une”) and Rebecca Marder (“Deception”), cuts back and forth across time, as it explores the life of French politician and former President of the European Parliament, Simone Veil (1927-2017), who played a key role in passing abortion legislation in France, protecting rights of prisoners, immigrants, AIDS victims and prostitutes, and preventing torture by French forces during the Algerian war of independence.
Born into a French-Jewish family, Veil’s world view was decisively shaped by the Nazi occupation of France, when much of her family was rounded up by French police and sent to concentration camps,...

The latest in our series of writers defending maligned films is a reappraisal of Ron Howard’s starry relationship comedy
When The Dilemma opened in January 2011 it was met with critical contempt and box office apathy. Audiences then and now are befuddled by it and every scathing review asks the same question: “What kind of movie is this supposed to be?” It’s too serious for a comedy but too silly for a drama. It’s too bro-tastic for a satire but too incisive for a mindless frat pack foray. It has very insightful jokes and very crass jokes. By all accounts, it’s a mess. But I argue, that while the film is messy, it’s not a mess.

Continuing our series of writers defending unloved films is a reappraisal of Andrew Niccol’s flop satire starring Al Pacino as a director who creates a virtual actor
It’s not surprising that S1m0ne wasn’t a hit at the time of its release in 2002. The premise is preposterous. Its dialogue is often absurd. The tone oscillates wildly from proclamations about the human condition to slapstick sequences. What is perplexing, however, is that in the intervening years it has not been reappraised as a cult classic for those same reasons.

For decades, the identity of a rapist and murderer who terrorized California communities was an unsolved mystery. Now, the story of a woman who doggedly tracked him but didn’t live to see his capture is a tragedy. HBO’s I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, which premieres Sunday (10/9c), blends both of those tales in a gripping new docuseries.
The project is part true-crime thriller about the hunt for the Golden State Killer and part captivating memoir of Michelle McNamara, the writer who coined the murderer’s nickname but died before completing the book on which the series is based.

French producers have banded together to lobby the government to push insurance companies to start covering damages caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In any other country, asking insurance companies to change their policies in the midst of a pandemic for the sake of solidarity would be perceived as a practical joke, but not in France.
The ministries of finance and culture, along with the National Film Board, have started exploring different scenarios to get insurance companies on board, according to Valérie Lépine-Karnik, the head of the Upc, one of the French producers guilds that signed a letter to Culture Minister Franck Riester appealing for support in reaching a compromise with insurance firms.

"Who can hack a human being?" One more trailer for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and a new international trailer this week already. This new Us trailer from Netflix presents the story entirely differently - about hackers and hacking our augmented reality, and how one of them is getting away with murders by erasing memories. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a mysterious hacker woman known as "The Girl" - Amanda Seyfried. This also stars Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. This actually looks good, I'm planning to watch once it's available - starting in early May on Netflix. "We can't control what we can't see." Another new international trailer has debuted for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and it still looks very intriguing. The film is about a near-future where there is no privacy or anonymity, where even private memories are recorded in an effort to cut down on crime. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a hacker woman known as "The Girl", played by Amanda Seyfried. She has no identity, no history and no record. Also starring Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. I'm usually interested in whatever Niccol makes, especially if it's full-on sci-fi, and I'm fascinated by this. That digitized filmmaking style with augmented reality Pov is crazy cool. Check this out. Here's a second international...

It would be lovely to think that last year’s “Moonlight” Oscar wins presaged a long and permanent shift in Hollywood movie culture. At the heart of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ complex diversity issue is how much the Oscars reflect the way that the Academy likes to view itself. That helps to explain why the Academy voters did far better with their 2017 Oscar nominations than the year before, when their 6,000 members failed to nominate any actors of color at all.

Darren Aronofsky’s film portrays the horror and violence of becoming a different species.
When I first watched Darren Aronofsky’s 2011 film Black Swan, I immediately knew that it was the kind of film that required multiple viewings. Naturally, I went back to the theater and watched it again before buying a DVD copy which I have since worn out with repeated viewings. Black Swan is a dense and layered film, with so much to focus on: the theme of doubles and doppelgangers, the prominence of mirrors, the way the plot matches the story of Swan Lake, the meticulously crafted visuals, and the film’s obsession with differing expressions of femininity. However, it wasn’t until I took a class focusing on Animals in Cinema that I realized this film deals with a woman’s literal transformation into a swan. Nina’s (Natalie Portman) transformation into a swan neatly matches up with French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and...

There's a moment early in the new season premiere of the FX crime drama Fargo when a parole officer recalls how he met his fiancée, a slick hustler named Nikki Swango (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead). As the episode flashes back to Nikki at a police station, getting booked and photographed, fans of filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen might experience some deja vu. The situation, the way it's shot, and even the way the crook gets yanked around by the authorities – it's all right out of the Coens' 1987 comedy Raising Arizona.

The estate of Nina Simone took umbrage with a quote tweeted by actress Zoe Saldana, who will portray the late singer in a controversial, upcoming biopic.

The head of the distributor behind the Nina Simone biopic has responded to a growing furore over the suitability of Zoe Saldana to play the celebrated singer and Civil Rights activist.
Rlj Entertainment founder and chairman Robert L. Johnson, who also founded the Black Entertainment Network, defended his star, whose parents hail from Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, calling her portrayal “an exceptional and mesmerising tribute to Nina Simone.”
Saldana has come under fire from Simone’s daughter Lisa Simone Kelly, among others, after a trailer appeared of the actress with blackened skin.
The trailer added fuel to a fire that took hold in 2012 when images first appeared of Saldana in make-up as Simone.
Ever since the actress stepped in to replace Mary J Blige, who pulled out due to scheduling changes, she has drawn the ire of Kelly and representatives of the family.

Zoe Saldana has faced immense criticism over her casting as music legend Nina Simone in the upcoming biopic Nina. But now fans can have a more informed opinion by watching the film's debut trailer, via Today.
Nina follows Simone through her iconic career, focusing on a period of isolation while living in France, as she struggles to balance music and political activism. At her lowest, she finds inspiration from assistant-turned-manager Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), and that crucial relationship anchors the trailer.
Simone pays Henderson $2,000 per month to handle her affairs.

The good news is that Nina Simone is still getting a lot of attention. Fans applauded the 2015 documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone?" and now, if they want, fans can watch Zoe Saldana as "The High Priestess of Soul" in "Nina."
The biopic's first poster was shared yesterday by Entertainment Weekly, followed today by the first trailer, which co-stars David Oyelowo as Simone's assistant-turned-manager, whom she met while in isolation in France.
"Nina" has had a long, rough road to this point, and it's still facing controversy. According to EW, Mary J. Blige was set to star back in 2010, but dropped out from scheduling conflicts. Saldana has faced criticism for being too light-skinned to play the legendary singer, and the actress doesn't seem to disagree.

I'm sure most of you watched the Academy Awards last night, so I wanted to create a place for you to talk to us and your fellow commenters about the winners, losers, snubs, performances, and host. For good reason, the topic of diversity was looming large in the minds of the producers of the broadcast, and I thought host Chris Rock did a great job of ripping Hollywood while at the same time creating a call to action for equal opportunity in the industry (which is all the controversy really boils down to). For addressing a tough, complicated issue that obviously doesn't start and end with the organization of the Oscars, I thought it was handled about as well as it could have been.
As for the winners and losers, I was pleasantly surprised to see Mad Max: Fury Road take home as many awards as it did, considering what...

The winners of the 88th Annual Academy Awards have been announced, the biggest award Best Picture went to 'Spotlight.' 'The Revenant' took home the Best Director Oscar for Alejandro González Iñárritu, making Iñárritu the third director in history to win back-to-back directing and Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his Oscar for Best Actor (and there was much rejoicing).
Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki also won his third Best Cinematography Oscar in a row for 'The Revenant.' 'Mad Max: Fury Road' was the big winner of the night for most awards, sweeping the technical categories to earn six Oscars, including Best Production Design.
It was a great year for Irish talent picking up nominations but only Stutterer, which was directed by Irishman Benjamin Cleary managed to pick up a award in Best Short Film (Live Action). The short can be viewed on the Rte player here.

With movies like “Gattaca,” “In Time,” and “S1m0ne,” writer-director Andrew Niccol has made a career out of crafting sci-fi worlds that comment on emerging real-world issues like genetic engineering and the gap between the haves and the have-nots. Clive Owen will star in the next film from Niccol, Deadline reported today. Here’s the logline for this new movie, called “Anon”: [Owen] plays a detective in a world with no privacy, ignorance and anonymity. It is the end of crime. However, when Owen’s character stumbles on a young woman who doesn’t exist, he discovers it may not be the end of crime but the beginning. A world with no privacy — looks like Niccol is now using sci-fi to comment on issues we encounter in our own reality of dwindling privacy in a post-Snowden, social media-dominated world. 1997’s “Gattaca” established Niccol as a creator of quality, sleek-looking, and thought-provoking sci-fi.

After many months of speculation, the full list of this year's Oscar nominees have been announced - just minutes after the reveal of the death of beloved thespian Alan Rickman.
"The Revenant" led the field with twelve nominations followed by "Mad Max: Fury Road" with ten and "The Martian" with seven. Next were "Spotlight" and "Carol" with six nominations; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "The Big Short" and "Bridge Of Spies" got five; "Room" and "The Danish Girl" nabbed four; "Sicario," "Brooklyn" and "The Hateful Eight" scored three; and "Steve Jobs" and "Ex Machina" nabbed two.
Surprises? "Creed" and "Joy" scored only one nomination each for Stallone's and Lawrence's performances respectively. No Ridley Scott for director, Quentin Tarantino or Aaron Sorkin for screenplay, Charlize Theron for best actress, "Carol" for best picture, "See You Again" for best song, and of course - the distinct lack of racial diversity. Here's the list in full.
