Due to copyright issues, the creators couldn't use Godzilla's classic roar for the show. Instead, Ted Cassidy voiced him using generic cartoon monster sounds that were also used as stock sound effects in other shows of the time. A widespread rumor says that in the Japanese version, they changed Godzilla's roar to the one used in the films, but this was not the case, since the show was not released in Japan.
The show was rerun on Cartoon Network in the mid-90's on their "Afternoon Adventures" and later "Power Zone" afternoon block of action shows. Since the original Godzilla movies were often difficult to come by and some countries have never seen any Godzilla films before, this series in fact marked the first time that many audiences became familiar with the character due to Cartoon Network's wider availability.
The series was originally meant to stay true to the movies, but network executives forced its creators to add comedic elements (such as Godzilla's clumsy nephew Godzooky) and show Godzilla as a heroic ally of humans rather than a city-destroying monster.
Godzilla shows off many new special abilities that he didn't have in the films, such as shooting lasers out of his eyes and breathing fire instead of radioactive rays. These changes were met with mostly negative reaction from the hardcore fans.
Although his color in the original movies is grey, Godzilla in this series is colored green.
